Drivers in New Jersey who don't want to see a ridiculous toll hike: now is your time to speak up. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is adding a public hearing to its original plan of hosting three hearings. The fourth hearing will take place on October 10 at the Authority's headquarters in Woodbridge.

Here's how the hike breaks down:

The proposed increases would begin with a 60-cent hike on the average turnpike trip next year, followed by a 90-cent increase three years later and a 30-cent increase in 2023. On the parkway, the average trip would rise by 15 cents next year, 25 cents more in 2012 and 8 cents on top of that in 2023.

Hi Kathy,

I am still trying to figure out the Garden State Parkway! 35-ish years ago when they built it, they said "After 4 years we will remove the toll booths, because by then we will have recovered the building costs."
Then years later when they were questioned why the toll booths were never removed, they said "We can't put toll collectors out of work." But then they automated the toll collection, and put most of them out of work anyway! But we all know that if it were to their benefit, putting them out of work would not be an issue at all.

I'm glad you brought this up Kathy, especially because of the timing of our economy collapsing. This is a good example of why we need to be more assertive and demand answers. The way I see it, is they can pay people under the table to sign off on things to manipulate the system to fatten their wallets, or get their buddies cushy government jobs, and as long as we stay passive, the problem only grows bigger and bigger. When we become assertive, and demand to see accountings of monies collected----thats when they begin to get nervous and all of a sudden they don't need to raise tolls.
I am hoping that this collapse acts as a wake up call, that we as citizens, need to take a more active roll in keeping an eye on our government, and not being afraid to speak up. I don't think most people realize that we do have power in numbers when it comes to the state and federal government.

Tolls are a tax. Once they are in place, those in power never want to relinquish them. Almost every single tax, including income tax was sold to the American people as "temporary." The temporary part is true as long as you take the long view. When you die, you will no longer have to pay taxes or tolls. Life itself is temporary. As the economy gets more challenging, tax revenue drops and we will see tolls increase everywhere. The only reduction of funds and spending we will see is in our wallets.

Quite a few years ago, they said that they were going to take the toll boths down on the Southern State Parkway. Ya know what? THEY DID! That's one in a row. It's the only time I can remember anyone ever removing the toll. Then they said they were also going to remove the tolls from out bridges in NY. Ya know what? They're not, in fact they want make us pay tolls on our free bridges. I think the people of New Jersey should speak up and try to stop the insanity.

Speaking of tolls, I had a tollful weekend. I went to see my high school buddy in Hacketstown on Friday and paid the ridiculous 8 dollar toll at the GW bridge on the way home. On Saturday, I went to a great birthday party in Newburgh. I avoided the tolls on the way up via the Bear Mountain Parkway, but I took the thruway back since I came back at 3AM and wanted the straight shot to my house. I think I paid one 2 dollar toll, 1 1.30 cents tool and 4 more 1 dollar tolls. On the plus side, I filled up the gas tank in Hacketstown at 3.25 a gallon. By the way, I went to a great winery, Benmarl winery in Newburgh which has an incredible view of the Hudson river valley. Hope everybody had a great weekend.

Hi Kathy, is there something that can be done about a blogger by the name of Scott1? He has really crossed the line with his comments on our blogs, using filthy language and more importantly his lacivious comments about the on-air female talent. It just keeps getting worse and worse. If you'd like to see an example, check out my latest blog, and all of Christina's blogs. He's offending a lot of people. All we did was to try to get him to clean up his act.
I sent a similar message to Luke!

Hey Bob. I think Kathy and the crew may have cleared it up with him. I logged in yesterday, and all of his comments on my blog were erased, so either they banned him and removed that stuff, or they just deleted the comments. I didnt hear from him last night, so Im hoping for the best. Have a great weekend. And thank you for your help Kathy. Hope you feel better soon!!

Mornin' Kathy. They're in the comment in my BBB'S NEWS VIEWS #8! I didn't delete them so you could see them. His bad taste comment are sprinkled through some other blogs. They really got out of hand and are bordering on serious stalking! Check it out for yourself Kathy!
Thanks Bob.

No problem BBB. I also directed Kathy to Christina Parks blog which is where 90% of the creepiness started. He left a few for Ines too, but nothing as bad as Christinas, as well as yours and mine.

Yeah, he really went over the top with those comments. I can attest to the nasty ones he left on both Bob's blogs. Big Bob's are still there, but I think Bobby deleted his.
