Kathy's Blog

The next time you have 'bloggers block' (something like writers' block) consider this:

The Generacion Y blog - posted by a woman in Cuba-  is getting more than a million hits a month. But in order to get that kind of traffic she has to: 1. dress like a tourist to slip into a Havana hotel to write the posts; 2. pay $6 an hour for internet access (an amount she can barely afford) and 3. run the risk of being caught and sent to prison.

The Generacion Y blog is giving Cubans freedom they haven't enjoyed since the communist takeover of the island decades ago. Oppression is real there... and now people everywhere are reading first hand about the pain and suffering.

Check out the blog... Generacion Y... there is an English and Spanish version.

Wow! I am glad she is speaking up for herself and for all Cubans. I hope she doesn't get caught! How did you find this Kathy? After Castro's death nothing changed huh? When his brother passes, who is next in line? When the lineage runs thin enough, one can only hope for changes.
Such a beautiful island, and the nicest of people, destroyed by communism! If all Cubans got together, they would out-number their government and have more power. The jails can't hold all of them.

Hi, Jane.

I also hope she doesn't get caught. She seems smart enough about hiding but what ends up on the internet never really disappears. My guess is that most people on the island don't read her posts; it's the outside world that's learning more and more about living under a communist dictator.

I found the blog in an article I was reading by an Associated Press writer. I also looked up other articles about Cuba and came across some more information about her blog.

I also hope the wonderful people of Cuba do something now that a new person is in power, but I also feel like their moment may have come and gone.

As for who is next in line? I'm not sure. I bet there is another Castro wanting to take over... or at least someone as radical as Fidel.

Good morning, Kathy. I started checking out her site about a year ago and her posts are fascinating. I am pleasantly surprised that she is still going strong as it would seem something that the Cuban government would want to stop. Then again, how much do we really know about that anyway? I was lucky enough to travel to Cuba many years ago and it is a very interesting place with a unique history and people. Ms. Sanchez is an excellent writer who describes a life that most of us have never and will never know. I really like her sense of humor (I have a weakness for sarcasm when its played well) on the site as well and I admire her fortitude. I hope she continues her good work for a long time.

Hi, Daniel.

It's great to hear that you've checked out Yoani's posts, too. I've been thinking about putting together a piece about her. I might even need to quote you!

If you come across anything that she's written that you want to highlight, let me know.

Thanks for the input, Daniel.
