Kathy's Blog

When I look at pigeons I can't help but see right through them- all the garbage including plastic bags, wrappers, coins and other dead animals inside their stomachs (I can thank a certain magazine that did a great story on what's inside a pigeon and laid everything out in a photo spread.) So when I read an article about creating a day
to honor pigeons I sort of agreed. All that nasty stuff would make you think I wouldn't want to encourage them, but I agree with one particular point: people have given pigeons a bad name. So they eat gross stuff... so what? They're birds. Plus, they're eating what's around. We're the ones leaving the garbage out. Now who's nastier? So there's a pigeon day.. big deal... there's a Shake Hands Day and a Smile Day and a Be Nice Day...I'm for Pigeon Day!

Absolutely Kathy, we leave all the garbage around for the pigeons - the only really gross thing is what they " SPLAT " upon us. Some cultures say when this happens it is a sign of good luck! I'm for Pigeon Day too!!!

Who couldn't use a little good luck?! Thanks, BronxGirl1 for commenting!

I hate to admit this (because it was embarassing at the time, but quite funny now) but pigeon pooped on me once. It was during gym class back in elementary school. We were playing in the school yard. Everyone saw it and everyone laughed. Despite this, I'm still for National Pigeon Day.

Pigeon Day sounds good. I mean, I see them everywhere so why not acknowledge them, right? I'd also support a National Squirrel Day, if it exists. I didn't read that magazine article but I thought it was really interesting to hear the types of things they found in the pigeons...I mean, I know they eat garbage, but coins and plastic bags? Wow. I feel bad for the poor things.

About three months after I first wrote about the push to create a National Pigeon Day, it turns out New York City is honoring the birds today! Even City Councilman Tony Avella is flying side-by-side with the birds. I'll post the interview with Councilman Avella a little later this morning.

What about Doves? They are pigeons, only white. I got two doves as a gift once from someone who knew I love birds. I really like exotic birds; not really a Dove fan, but they actually turned out to be good pets for a while. They thought the ceiling fan in the kitchen was a carnival ride, and they rode every day. They had babies, but out 6 eggs, only two survived and grew up. They both were cute, especially when taking flying lessons. After getting tired of cleaning up after them-----gosh they poop every 3 minutes----I gave them to a friend/magician and he recruited them into his magic act.

Chickens arn't much cleaner and we eat them. Thats all I'm gonna say out of fear of being attacked due to my views on the subject. LOL

Jane, that is a great comparison. I bet if we called pigeons City Doves more often fewer people would dislike the birds. I love how you gave them away (after taking such good care of them) to someone who now uses them in his magic act! If you have any pics, you can upload them to our pet page.... http://media.myfoxny.com/petpage/

Tom... hello.. it's been a while... chickens are dirty little things... I couldn't agree with you more. I'm hitting the road this afternoon, I think I'll use the "bluebird of happiness" message on the driver...

I grew up in New York, and some of my fondest memories are sitting in Central Park with my grandfather feeding the pigeons! They are rather amazing birds if one studies up on them. National Geographic did a great story on them this Spring. Worth watching! I was sure impressed.

"all the garbage including plastic bags, wrappers, coins and other dead animals inside their stomachs" Gee, and she ain't even blonde! Let's get clear about this: Pigeons are seed eaters. You know, those little round things? Not meat eaters. Not even bugs. Oh and, pigeons don't make you sick (generally, you can't catch what they catch; check the city Health Dept. site on this; even they can't make pigeons scary). Oh and, your poop is toxic biohazard stuff; pigeon poop gets put out with the trash (more from the city Health Dept. web site). Oh and, pigeons actually like people -- even newspeople who work for guys who guzzle Foster's by the gallon and say "g'day!" a lot. Oh and, the New York pigeon population has been slowly declining for the last two decades; since pigeons can take more crap that we can, this should perhaps be a wake-up call? That is, after you get over the effects of the Foster's

If you go back, NYCWarlock and actually read my post, you'll see that I LIKE pigeons. I'm not one of those people who thinks they're "rats with wings." They are birds. They're creatures. They have a right to co-exist with us city folk like it or not.

As for what I wrote was inside them, that's factual. Look up studies done on pigeons-- blogger anngr- referred to the same article I cited from National Geographic. That story included a photo of all the "items" removed from a piegone's stomach. Lots of garbage. And a lot of that stuff is garbage we humans leave behind in the form of litter.

Pigeons eat scraps of food us humans leave; so by eating scaps of food dduring the day; the rats which emerge at night do not find scaprs.

So in effect; by Pigoens eating scraps of food; they control the Rat population so the Rats are less because the rats do not find scrpas. so the choice is; Pigoens OR rats ?

Either way man has got to stop littering food.
