Walking in Memphis

Last weekend I enjoyed a "girls weekend" with my mom and my sister. We went to Tunica and Memphis. I'm not Kenny Rogers, so the whole gambling thing wasn't all that exciting for me, although I did win a little on the penny and nickel slots.
The real fun was in Memphis! They were have a B-B-Q Fest, so Beale St. was hoppin' for my first experience. The music was amazing! It was very cool to go from place to place all along the street and hear all the different people playing. Guitars of all shapes and sizes were everywhere!
The highlight by far was Graceland! I was there in 1978...30 years ago you stood in line outside the gates and walked up that long driveway, past the pool and his grave and that was it!
Now you wait across the street and take a shuttle to the front door. The first thing I realized was that it isn't as big as I always thought it was! Before I went, people told me he had hideous taste, that the colors were awful! I disagree! I liked it...well, the kitchen carpet wasn't "all that" and at the time, green shag carpet was fashionable...even on the ceiling!
This is getting long, so I'll hurry it up...there are many museums with all kinds of his stuff on display. Seeing all his jumpsuits reminded me of Tim Ezell and I could see Glenn picking up any one of his guitars and bieng right at home.
Inside are slide shows, they are kind of fun!

Wow!
Saturday night my mom & I went out to the Sheldon Concert Hall to see a concert organized by her good friend, the Legendary Mae Wheeler.
"A Soulful Celebration" was presented by "PAAR" (Professional and Amateur Artist Recognized), an organization that gives scholarships to students to study music. All the proceeds for this event went into this fund. The music at the V.I.P. reception was provided by these students and boy was I impressed!
The list of artists for the concert itself was equally amazing:
St.Paul A.M.E. Youth Choir
Donnie Brown
Merry Keller & The Downtown Sound
Ren'ee Smith
Bill Tucker
Sheri Elle White
Mary Dyson
Power Play Girls
Charles Glenn
Kim Massie
Adrianna Larkin
Clint Gallagher
Kecia Davis
Cheryl Brown
Mark Gladney
Joyce Hines
Jeremia Allen
A Taste of Motown
and "Lady Jazz" heself, Mae Wheeler!
The evening was phenominal! I was delightfully surprised to see Fox2's own Bonita Cornute as M.C. for the event and I must say she was a doll!
Please come inside for a peek into my wonderful night out!
If some of the pics are fuzzy, I apologize, I'm still learning how to work my new camera!
