P-D reports Wednesday Metro Police unveil hidden microphones in the Wells-Goodfellow neighborhood to pick up sounds of gunfire.  This supposed help courtesy of a $250,000 federal give-away.

Is this really the news, or more likely a take-off on a scene from a Three Stooges movie?  "Hey, what's that, you hear a shot?  No, I didn't hear a shot, did you?"

Please, SLPD.  Just in case you haven't heard lately, St. Louis remains one of the most violent cities in America.  Are we aware of that yet?  Go out and fight the crime.  We don't need high tech microphones trying to pick up sounds of gunfire after the fact.

Just about guarantee you, if we had the courage and/or resources to place cops walking the beats in these neighborhoods, you'd see a drop in crime.  And they wouldn't be walking armed with only bobby clubs.

Enough of the Three Stooges stuff.  Let's get back to business.

Officers walking the beat instead of riding around in cars will help slow criminal activities.

How about using golf carts like Jennings???

BTW, I love the Three Stooges!!!

Would it not make more sense to have survelience cameras instead so they can actually see who is doing the shooting....

Along Virgina St from Bates to Merimec are signs that indicate there are mobile video cams in the area that are monitored by the SLMPD. Interesting!

Consider the area you are speaking of MrMGrady. They could put 10,000 camera's up there, but if there are no police who really care, and really work to stop the violence. Then it is a waste of money. 2nd and 3rd district police could care less about the South Side. I use to live there and it was bad then. It is now 10 times worse. Presents of the police are needed and a community that is tired of the BOOGEDY.

I lived in S St Louis all my life and I used to walk to Ted Drews on S Grand. Now they have an armed guard at Ted Drews. That is sayin something about the South Side. Pretty bad when kids nowadays have to see that.

Why blame the police blame the shooters. If my husband was a police officer in the st louis area I would be scared to death. The community also needs to get involved to help run the drug dealers and crime out of the area.Every one has to want to get the city cleaned up. needs to be a joint effort

Excellent idea with sound devices for coverage. This is better than those crazy revenue producing red light cameras. Do the cops in the police cars have audio access to which device is witnessing a shooting?

Just ask any infantryman on the ground in Iraq. The microphones work and work damned well at pinpointing the sources of gunfire.

Now, getting the City of St. Louis to do something about the perps is a different story. The city has given away its tax base in TIFs to developers leaving a budget in shambles for both the City and its Police Department. And you expect things to get better?

If they're lucky enough to catch someone they then have to process them through the Criminal Justice system in the city, which has become a joke since they are unable to obtain convictions or plea bargain them away in the prosecutor's office.

Lordy, you hit a sore spot with me when you mention Dis. 3, and south STL. I lived there, saw cops taking pay offs. The sheriffs will tell you that if any cop out there can't make it they are sent to Dist. 3. I believe it, have witnessed the inability to do their jobs, and are as much a ciminal as the criminal. They lie to the grand jury, they lie in court, they steal, they sleep behind white castle, and the district is only as good as the Capt. and when you have a corrupt Capt. then the rest of 'em are gonna be corrupt, too, Right TOM!!! And Chris! Right?

A while back Kansas City did a study and placed officers on nearly every block. They did not see a decrease in crime. Yes St. Louis needs more officers, but they need to be able to have 2-man units before putting officers on foot patrol.
If somebody is willing to shoot and kill somebody, they are going to do it. No matter who is around.

Given that you have gang members in the St. Louis Police Department (and a General Order that prohibits flashing gang signs in the roll-call area) if they were to have two man cars in the city, they would spend more time on internal investigations of the trouble the two man cars would get into.

Unfortunately, since the City has given away the tax base in TIFFs you're not going to see any increase in police protection anytime soon.
