This year's tour has many changes and lots of surprises. After the completion of the first week Team Columbia ( is one of two American sponsored bicycle teams) has the Yellow Jersey - first overall with the best time, the Green Jersey - leader in the most points, and the White Jersey  - the best young rider.
Not bad considering this is Team Columbia's first year.

Today is one of two rest days in the tour. As the bicyclists make their way through the Pyrenees and then the Alps Team Columbia has slipped but is still considered a contender to be on the podium in Paris. Kim Kirchen and Cadel Evans (last year runner up in the tour) have switched places in the standings with Cadel being the overall leader. Just under two minutes separate the two riders. In the flat stages two minutes might as well be two hours.

This year’s tour did away with the time bonuses after last year’s very slow tour. Overall it is still a chess match with the one with the best time will win overall. In recent tours riders were awarded time bonuses for placing first, second, third, and so on. Thus the favorite riders were playing more a tactical game than actually riding for time. There will still be attacks, break-a-ways, and sprints to the finish but now everyone is riding closer together.

The mountain stages have always been an inspiration to me. Watching these guys climb at the same speed as I climb these hills here in Missouri. The biggest difference is their climbs are about eight miles were my longest one has been two miles. Not to mention their speed is around 15 mph while I am struggling to keep an 8 mph pace.

Anyway the tour is far from over and still roughly a thousand miles to cover before they reach the end in Paris. You can watch the tour on the Versus network.
