After my son had miss all last week of school, we go to the bus stop today to find out that 2 different cars have been trying to talk kids into going with them in my neighborhood. The police have been following the bus or riding in front of it throughout the whole bus route, making sure this does not happen. One of the cars was a white 4 door and the other a maroon color car, that's all I know about the cars. The police were called about both of them being at the bus stops when they have no reason to be. Both men in the cars. This is why I walk my son to his bus stop and stay there until he gets on and I am at the bus stop before it even gets there, to make sure Im there to get him off the bus.

I cannot stress enough, that not having a plan or not being there to get them off and on, is giving these people the perfect opportunity to take your child.  Please keep a close eye on your children at all times.

Thanks,

Hugs, Shan

Shannon this is so scary. If my babies had to ride the bus I would be there with them the whole time as well. Thanks for putting this up so we know.

What municipality was this in and what are they doing now to prevent this? We have an assigned "parent watch" each day. We alternate days in which a neighborhood parent stands at the bus stop until the kids are picked up and bus is gone. This works for a few reasons, one the kids don't fight at the bus stop and two odd cars don't stop and talk to the kids.

I am interested in what city this happened in and what the local police are doing to prevent this in the future. Parent Watch works - try it.

Shannon, how terrible! Thanks for reminding everybody to pay extra attention. We were a homeschool family until last October...I have never, ever missed a day of standing at the bus stop with my kids and praying with them right before they get on the bus, and then waving at them until I can't see the bus any longer. Then I go inside and spend a few minutes feeling guilty. Then I'm okay. This has been my routine every school day since last October!

You need a good Shepard hanging out at the bus stop with the Kiddo's.... They know instantly who is alright and who is up to no good....

My son asks every morning ......can I walk by myself. No way ...he thinks he's big at the age of 8 but he's autistic and would make friends with Jack the Ripper. He's just a loving chld so I have to watch out for him. So sad our kids can't be safe anymore.

Good God Shannon that is really scarey. I have seen more parent who let there children walk to the bus stop and school alone then I care to mention. There are to many people out there taking kids for that. People need to wake up and take care of their kids. Don't depend on another parent to do your job for you either. That parent who does come to the bus stop with their kids, just might not have to come to the bus stop one day, because the child is not going to school. So be responsible for your own children. Just had to say that.

Shannon: Is the bus stop located near someones house? Or, is it within a home of someone that you know?

What is wrong with our news stations? Doesn`t every parent here think that this should have been a major story on the morning, afternoon and evening news? If this had been bears on the loose, it would have been THE top story. And I guarantee the bear would do less damage to the children than a pervert. Why didn`t somebody pick up on this before?

amen. times have really changed. I remember when I was young we had people who looked out for us at the bus stop, the neighbors etc. Thanks for the blog.

Shannon, glad you're looking out for those kiddos out there.

The perverts will try to get to the kiddos, protect them peeps. I had one try to get me in his car once when I was a teen. I was never told to not get into cars with strangers, I just knew better. Unfortunately not all kids know what to do.

Teach you kids to yell FIRE if anyone ever grabs them. More people will run to help than if they yell ASSAULT, KIDNAPPING, RAPE, etc. Remember, FIRE.

Speedy I live in St. Charles. The bus stop is down the street from my house. There are 2 other kids that are there by themselves, so I will be watching them. There is also another adult besides myself, hes the one who told me about this. So us together will watch those other 2. I have been looking at evey white or green car, thats the other color, not maroon, sorry, that drives by. The man in the white car tried to pick up 2 5th graders, when he saw thier bus coming, he took off.
My son is 6 and as long as hes going to school on a bus, I will be walking him down and picking him up, wether he likes it or not.

Very scary! J.J.'s bus stop is one house down & I always go with him! Fortunately I have great neighbors & if I couldn't go with him the people across the street (2 families) have children & they would take him for me. Also, our bus driver doesn't pull away until the kids go in the house if the parents aren't outside waiting. If they don't get in they go back to school.

Things like this happen and it wakes us up to decide that something needs to be done before there is another incident. The police need to be doing their surveilance in plain clothes. The whole neighborhood should be watching for these vehicles and getting a license plate number. And when the offender is caught, the pressure should be on the court system to insure that this person is properly dealt with. Like right now, with Senator Craig, after getting his sentence reduced, paying a fine then saying he is going to fight it? The courts should toss that one right out and fine him again for attempting to manipulate the court system. It isn`t about if you are innocent or guilty any more, it is about how much you can spend on a lawyer. Remember O.J.Simpson?

Shannon: If the bus stop is within lets say 100 feet of a home then ask that person if you can put a camera on the stop. And, better yet if that person has a kid at the bus stop also then put that camera on a private web address and those in the neighborhood can view it. That's what we do here - my only problem is that I am 500 feet away and need the zoom. Try it - it's great and only costs around $300.
