I can not believe the jump in our real estate taxes this year.  We have lived in this house for 16 years and every year they have gone up.  They first were around $350 total with both installments and yes I know each year they  raised these taxes over something. Last year I believe we paid around $1100 and this year they went up almost 50%  higher than we normally pay.   Bring in more businesses if you need money.  The sad part of all this is our society is on a fast pace move...No downtime...so we have more mistakes in our Government. They rob us constantly.....Where is Robin Hood?

Mine went up 110% in 8 years. Now the Democrats in St. Louis County must control even our trash. Get out as soon as you can as I will.

Did taxes go up because the value of your house has increased? Welcome to the world of the richer on paper. Your asset increased in value.

Did taxes go up because the your community voted to raise taxes? Did you remember to get out to vote?

To explain to Mrs. My Country Wrong Or Right Flaglady, perky's taxes went up for the same reason mine did: City and County properties in this fine Republican state of Missouri were WAY overvalued. Yes, the value of our homes went up (well, at least several years ago, before the Bush economy of the rich ruined it and property values started to slide), but they did NOT go up NEARLY as much as the assessor says they did! My house, for example, is now worth $235,000! Because one down the block sold for that much. Assessment is the problem, not anything taxpayers voted on.

Of course, this happened for several reasons: The Republicans who controlled the County Council just before they were booted out last year put in place the program to up these assessments, in anticipation of lower business tax revenue. Business tax revenue is going down because of all the tax breaks for the rich and tax welfare handouts to developers for shopping centers.

Also, outstate Missouri property is WAY UNDERvalued, so we city folk must pay the balance. That's so all the Republicans' rural friends can get their handy tax break on the property they inherited.

And Republicans in the Missouri House, like that hypocrite from Kirkwood (can't think of his name), haven't taken ANY action on correcting this unfair taxation, even though they lie plenty about how much they care about fixing it! They've had plenty of time, and all we hear is excuses. It's so complicated!

Well, this is the same jerk who cast a deciding vote to allow concealed weapons even though his Kirkwood contituents voted

...2-1 to not allow it. So they SURE CAN ACT FAST when they want to!

They sure acted fast to make sure the rich still got their tax breaks! I wonder why giving the middle class a break on their unfair city and county assessments takes so long? Just kidding, of course we all know why!!

Right now Robin Hood is a Republican and is stealing from the poor and working folks and giving to the rich.

But in St. Louis County, even I have to admit we can't count on Democrats, either. Dooley is a Republican in Democrat's clothing so his core followers vote for him. Can't count on him.

We need to simply make our voices heard to the County Council and to your State Representative that if they don't address this issue, they don't get elected again. It's that simple!

So, perky, don't feel so bad.

I bought my house and moved in in early 2001 - just when Bush and the Republicans were taking control of our lives. That year, the property tax was $1,475.

In just a short six years of hearing about all these lower taxes the Republicans were going to bring to the table, the last bill was almost $2,600. That's close to doubling in six years!

Lower taxes, my arse! If there is one single lie in the sea of lies that come out of Republicans' mouths that stands out, that is the lie.

And, I guess you can tell, I'm SIK of it!

sicko - Reassessment went into effect back in 1983. But then you can't be confused with facts.

perks - You are Robin Hood! You have the power of the ballot!

Hey sik, it is the dems who are in favor of raising taxes after taxes after taxes.

Instead of whining about your assessment, did you bother to do something about it? If you felt yours was too high because the neighbor sold their house for more than yours is worth, you should of went down to the assessor's office to take care of it.

Taxes on the example given is 1.11% of the total value of the house. Mine is a lot less % wise. I pay about $1300 on $150,000 house or .87%.

What isn't fair is my neighbor who's house is worth so much more than mine has the exact same public services as me and their taxes are $2600 on their $300,000 house. The richer you are the more you have to pay in taxes. Sik explain to me how that is fair? We each have the same amount of road, police & fire service. We each have one child still in school. We are each only allowed to vote once.

I beleive Perky is in Il which is controlled by the DEMOCRATIC CROOKS in Southern IL! An average around here is a 220,000 small subdivision lot house taxes at 6,000. Going up 800 to 900 a year. While living in STL county my taxes were MUCH lower and Idid not have to drive for services. Example because of lawsuits I have health insurance yet cannot find a PCP who takes new patients in Glen Carbo Edwardsville or Collinsville...it is insane here!

BTW I vote for every thing even measly little elections where there is no one there and dust balls are blowing at the polling place. We also protested the taxes last year because they are selling new houses with many upgrades for the same price we paid forour housein 2004 not our assessed value. Plus Madison CO pays(for socials service jobs atleast) what I was getting paid in 1993 in StL county or they put you PT with no benefits--where do they think this money is going to come from?
I encourgae people to filean appeal if you feel they are not what the house is worth.

There is currently a petition going around to stop personal property and real estate taxes in Missouri. Many states have none and I would love to see the same for MO. I know they'll get us another way, but frnakly I HATE getting such a large bill around Christmas time each year.

BTW: There are a few petitions out...one is at PLS in Bismarck...(Patty's Little Store)

Ever tried to make a point with them? From what I have heard, they are always right, and usually the homeowner loses anyway. Most of you know how i HATE , after being taxed on my income, that I have to taxed on everything I bought with it.

Enough about these taxes and increases of 110% - that just means you were undertaxed to begin with. Yes, Perky - St. Clair County IL stinks!

That person with the $235K home and paying only $2,600 - enjoy that discount. Even though our home value is a bit more, we are just under $8,000 and you cannot blame any party (DEM or REP). You blame your local school boards - they take nearly 63% of your bill.

As for assessed values - they are averaged over a 3 year period so next year should be reality for the counties since the housing shutdown started in 2007.

I was shocked to find out what a friend of mine pays over in Fairview Hieghts for her property taxes. I pay less than half of what she pays and I have 4 times the house here in the City of STL. Her house is roughly 1000 sqft. Mine is over 4000 sqft. I only have a lot 50ft X 150ft and she has an acre though. But then again I pay a nice piece in personal property taxes each year and it is a pain to go through to keep a vehicle registered over here. My friend in Cahokia does not deal with all the hoops that we do.

ralphie: Yep, your property taxes are much cheaper in MO while you pay a personal tax though on vehicles and "toys". We don't pay a dime for personal property tax.

How in the heck do you fit a 4,000 sq ft home on that tiny lot though? Cahokia has a high multiplier also and their schools just did an increase in the past few years.

It's nice to vote for a school tax increase but taxpayers fail to remember - that tax is F-O-R-E-V-E-R!

Four Stories!!! I even have 1/2 of the lot as a yard!

I don't mind paying a tax that does not go to waste. The track record out there is poor.
