Senator Barack Obama brought his presidential campaign to St. Louis Friday (Oct. 26) but the only thing the public got to see was a fairly stock political speech at Union Station.  He made no news here.  How does Senator Obama expect to overcome Senator Clinton's huge lead (Rasmussen Poll :  Clinton : 46% to Obama : 18%) if he keeps talking in general terms about what he would do if elected ?

I made numerous requests for a personal interview with the candidate...after all Ilinois is part of our viewing  area and he does represent Illinois.  But I was told there was no time in his schedule.  He did have time to meet privately with politicians and some ministers at his headquarters before the rally.  If the campaign had allowed TV cameras there for even 10 minutes we could have brought you a much more personal view of a man who wants to be president.

I wanted to ask the senator about the U.S. decision to increase sanctions against Iran, about how he would handle an incursion into Iraq by Turkey  and whether he believes we are facing a long term war on terror or just a conflict aggravated by our attack of Iraq.  On the domestic side... we know he thinks the "No Child Left Behind" program is underfunded.  Where would Obama get the money he thinks it needs and how should it be spent ?  Do we need national tests for our kids?

Our Morning news crew has also been offering him time on the air live.   This is all "free" air time and part of our responsibility to let voters see him in a less controlled setting.  Why should he only answer questions from network reporters ?  St. Louis isn't the only town where his staff keeps the local media at bay.  It happened in Columbus, Ohio this morning.

In fairness, the other Democratic candidates have yet to hold a news conference in St. Louis or offer one one one interviews.  But recent visits by Republicans Governor Mitt Romney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani included at least twenty minute sessions with the local media.

I think all politicians speak in general terms. One party complains about the other party how they handle this or that. In their complaint they say they are going to change things but never commit on what is their plan. The debates are a joke, there is no debating but a lot of avoiding the issues.

Hate to be cynical, but the debates on both sides are more negative than positive. They each wait to see who's going to screw up worse, while avoiding direct answers to questions. Some should get an Emmy for their talents at repeating worthless rhetoric.

It seems that some parties and their candidates purposely stay away from live interviews in certain areas. Still remember seeing Edwards snub Jaco. I know they're all very busy with scheduling, but get tired of hearing that they just can't fit us in. If we were in a primary state, or on the coast, you can bet they'd stop long enough for a photo-op!

GrampyMoose you said a mouthful and I agree. I really don't like when candidates avoid talking to some media or media personality. Makes you wonder what are they afraid of. If they can't stand up to a journalist will they be able to stand up to others if President?

I usually don't get into national politics.
But OBAMA is running for the Vice Presidency.
He and his handlers know he can't beat Her.
But She also knows that having him on the ticket will bring in lots of African Americans into the voting booth.

Commentary on Clinton Obama ticket.

Its over people, we will start our slide into Socialism. it will pickup the needed momentum with their election. they will have 8 years to destroy this great nation. Their slogan will be "Cradle to Grave because we can feel your pain"

Obama isn't talking in specifics because he has nothing to say. He's been a Senator for one whopping term. He has no idea what to do to fix our problems. I would rather have seen him spend another term as a senator and then perhaps run for governor of Illinois before running for president.

It is also possible that he is keeping his best for later, when it really counts. His plan could be for the others to talk themselves out of contention then he will come on strong. Since things started so early this time people will be tired of the fighting and rhetoric way before the elections even get close. It all depends on what he can do in the month before the Democratic Convention. That`s where he needs to shine and do his interviews.

Simple answer the news cast would be seen by to many of his Constituents live and unedited.
no time to prescreen the question....

I think that the unedited and unprescreened question interviews are the best. It shows me that the candidate can think on their toes, and on their own. Also, it lets me know what they really represent in that the first thing that comes out of their mouth is often their own personal feeling about the matter. Prescreening questions lets them come up with smoke screen answers that I, personally, am tired of.

Weird,

I don't know. Now seems like to the time. I mean, Iowa's only something like 60+ days away. It seems like he might want to close that lead Clinton has on him. I mean, if he doesn't win the primaries, what he does before the convention isn't going to matter, unless Hillary wants to choose him as her running mate.

With Clinton on the defensive, Obama lost an excellent opportunity to connect with St. Louis voters by meeting with them via St. Louis TV. You are correct Betsy!

I tried to get in touch with Obama when we were having all of the Ameren problems, I sent e-mails to Obama and several congressmen from Illinois. I got responses from all except Obama. I also sent e-mails to Obama and other congressmen about the problem with the insurance company - and again I got responses from all except Obama. When Chicago had Ameren problems - Obama is giving his smooth talk about what should be done - that told me he does not know anything south of Chicago is still Illinois. He has done nothing for the southern part of the state of Illinois. He did find my address to request a donation from me to support his political position - guess what he got. He flip flops when talking as he says what he thinks the group of people he is talking to want to hear. I will vote for the first candidate that can show me they have two feet to stand on, a back bone without the yellow streak, can talk for themselves and will take a stand for something. It won't be Obama.

I learned to pull wires in the Washoe Legislature, & my experience is, that when a bill is to be put through a body like that, the only thing necessary to insure success is to get the reporters to log-roll for it. - Mark Twain September 25, 1864

I'm a veteran television news reporter who has spent her entire career working in the St. Louis market. I came to Missouri from Buffalo, N.Y. to attend the University of Missouri Journalism School in Columbia and never looked back. St. Louis is an interesting town with plenty of stories to share. I'm always looking for one, but politics and education are my passions.
