Controversial School Board President Veronica O'Brien has been voted out by her peers. At a meeting Thursday morning, the six board members voted to remove her as the president of the School Board. Veronica was not present for the meeting.

Many people say it's the best thing for the board, but others say the problems of the district stretch far beyond this one person.

While O'Brien will remain a board member, the board is not expected to vote on a new president until sometime in June.

The board also wants to appeal the state's impending takeover. The takeover is scheduled to take place June 15th.

So, what do you think? Is Veronica's out a good thing and do you think the district should fight the state?

Yes, they should fight the state! I know that this goes way beyond one person, but it's just time for her to go. She didn't make matters any better either. If she was gone along time ago, maybe Craig Williams would still be here. He was doing some great things. Then to bring a fired superintendent from another district to make it right just doesn't make sense to me. I'm glad my daughter is coming out this year and I am thinking about sending my son to the county. I have had enought with their constant bickering.

Well it is about time they voted her crazy butt out. She should have been long gone months ago.

I actually think having her out will lessen some confusion. But I also think they had problems before her. No one wants to say it, but maybe the state is the best option for the kids. I mean, it can't be any worse.

You're right. The state can't screw it up any worse than it already is. I think they went about it all wrong, so it looks like a bad thing. However, I attended the SLPS several years ago, so did my sister, and my brother graduates next month.
The thing that doesn't get much publicity is the fact that the SLPS keeps dropping the graduation requirements to meet what the students are doing instead of working to bring the students up to the requirements.
When I started high school, 2 years of foreign language were required to graduate. While I was in high school, it was dropped to 1 year. Shortly after I graduated, it was dropped altogether. Same thing with other areas - instead of teaching the kids, they drop the requirements. How is that education???
The fact is, you can graduate from a SLPS high school at the top of your class, and you'll STILL BE WAY BEHIND if you go to college. That's reprehensible.

Maybe Miss O'brien and Mayor Anne will team up and run on a joint ticket for another public office....They have that name Recognition...

"I could care less." Indeed - her own words sum up the
pathetic existence of this individual. Cheers to the BOE for this huge step in what we
all hope will eventually lead to positive changes.

By the way, Mrs. O'Brien, it's "I couldn't care less."
Whatever. We got your point. Take your toys and go home.

I don't think Ms. O'Brien ever truly cared about anything except herself. It is a positive move to remove her as board president, although if she "could care less", why is she still on the board at all? in my opinion, if any elected public official states to the media that they don't care about the position they hold, then they shouldn't be there. She is not getting paid, by her own admission, she doesn't and she is not attending meetings. Why doesn't she do us all a favor and leave? She doesn't leave because she would lose the limelight.
I feel the state has bit off more than they can chew with this takeover. The district needs to be divided into smaller districts which are as racially and economically diverse as possible.
It may only be a pipe dream, but if the Special School District would work with the City as they do with the County, change would be immediate. The State is in for some big surprises.
This should be quite interesting. I am on the front lines as a teacher within the district. I wonder what would the parents, my students, my principal or my coworkers would say if I declared that "I could care less." I intend to remain as long as possible, although this is not true for MANY other teachers.
Please say a prayer for the THOUSANDS of citizens, both young and old that will be immediately affected by what is happening.
I just hope that any person involved in the decision making process does not have the same lackadaisical attitude that Ms. O'Brien possesses... I pray that none of them say "I could care less."

A little too late. Now if we could just get the rest of them off also. They all played a part. What is truly sad...Veronica still has a spot on the Board of Education - she just isn't President. Guess we should be happy for the little improvements.

I am so glad that the state took over the SLPS.
It was well overdue. I'm also glad that they removed O' Brien from the President seat. I just wanted to know why is she still on the board?

She didn't seem like she had the best interest of the children at heart when she made decisions.

It's about time. Now how can they get her off the board? I have a feeling the problems that board has to face are many and complicated. I thought it was a good idea for the state to come in and take over for a while. Things look pretty messed up to me, but I do believe the Superintendant has a good head on her shoulders and wants to take the district in a positive direction. You go BOE, and remember every decision you make should be the very best one for the students. If long drawn out litigation is ahead with the state, you may want to rethink that one.

I al glad that the state took over also. Ms Obrien needed to be kicked of along time ago. She used school money to buy her kids presents instead of putting it towards remodeling the delapitated schools. I went to Sigel from 1989 to 1992 and it was bad then can't imagine what it looks like inside now.
It is sad that SLPS does not set a higher standard when electing a president. The children need more than what they are receiving. Children in all areas should receive the same education expreience.

It is about time she was out!

There has to be a better way to deal with the situation. A reconstruction of the school district is imperative!

I just seen the story about county schools that will be taking city students on transfer.
Fox 2 featured Ritner High school.
it all up in the air about what is going to happen.

This is my personal observation about the representative from Riterner in the story.

He seem really delighted to have these kids come into their system.
It does strike me funny that it would seem that its not about the education of the kids, but the money that these students will generate about 12 to 14 thousands per pupil.

What say yee Betsey?

Hopefully all the coverage of the foolishness going here and in other cities will make people get involved and do some research on candidates before they vote...IF they even get out to vote.

I had no idea how much power the school board held until I started hearing about some of these boards gone wild. We've got some school board elections coming up and Tuesday and I'm trying to get educated about the candidates.

If the students are able to transfer to county schools...the money follows them (tuition)...what happens after they misbehave as some do in the city schools...they will be sent back to the city schools...will the money follow them back or will it remain with the county school that accepted them???? Any input??

I hope I made it clear that no St. Louis County school district has offered to accept St. Louis city transfer students yet outside of the existing voluntary desegregation transfer program. Ritenour took some Wellston students several years ago, but has not decided what to do about St. Louis city students.

Well Betsey. They can't go to Riverview if they wanted, riverview was never part of deseg.
Their systems is on the verge of collapse.
Riverview has only met 3 out of the states 15 requirements for accreditation.

Be safe

I'm a veteran television news reporter who has spent her entire career working in the St. Louis market. I came to Missouri from Buffalo, N.Y. to attend the University of Missouri Journalism School in Columbia and never looked back. St. Louis is an interesting town with plenty of stories to share. I'm always looking for one, but politics and education are my passions.
