It seems kids have found a new way to be mean to their peers by mocking them on the internet or even posting video of kids attacking other kids.  After the Fox Two story Monday about Parkway Northeast Middle School students video taping a beating and placing it on the "YouTube" site, I wanted to find out how districts are handling such incidents.  The kids have gotten ahead of the grownups when it comes to technology so there are no specific rules about something like that.  But most districts say they can discipline students for an off-campus or after hours violation if repercussions from it disrupt  the school day or interrupt instruction.

We also learned of a statewide video conference teaching online safety Tuesday night.  Fourteen schools and libraries offered parents and students an opportunity to watch experts speaking from Columbia and then talk to local police and counselors. Bullying can be physical or mental. Many school age children suffer from verbal abuse which can be just as painful. To add insult to injury, they often keep silent about these attacks. They worry "tattling" will lead to further ridicule from their peers.

I am normally not this blunt, but regardless what the core reasoning is behind bullying, I blame the parents. Get a grip on your kids and take some initiative and find out what your kids problem is. If they bully now, the are going to grow up to be much worse. Whatever provokes bad behavior isn't going to miraculously go away be itself. Be responsible, raise your kids, society is getting sick of dealing with them.

Blame the parents? DEFINITELY! Maybe a slap across the jaw of the bullies' parents will inspire some parental guidelines being instilled.

I am a student of northeast middle school. The media is not stating the news properly at all. The two kids agreed to fight and the so-called victim lost the fight. I think a loser of an agreed fight should not be considered a victim, since he could reject it if he chose to. Do you think an agreed fight between 2 middle school students is considered bullying? Beacuse I sure don't and I have no sympathy towards the "victim"

why is it that we are always Reacting to things rather than being proactive? Our organization needs help being proactive in keeping our kids safe not only from bullying but from violence as well - we are putting together a program that would benefit everyone in st louis ages 17-20 as they graduate from high school and prepare for college - We need funding - media support and awareness and a central venue location to be donated - easy access for all... working with various groups such as YMCA, RAD instructors, law enforcement, St Johns hospital -
We are working on putting together a program for the St Louis Girls ages 17-20. This would be a 6 hour program which would include a variety of speakers.

1) Personal Safety and Awareness / defense

2) Rape awareness training from RAD trainer

3) Speaker on Self-Esteem issues - a lot of issues with life and men stem from low self-esteem

4) Education on effects of alcohol / drugs and drunk driving effects - MADD

5) Speaker on healthy eating during dorm life

6) Speaker on financial management living on your own

Will be working with a variety of local non-profit organizations and speakers will be donating their time. We are looking for corporate sponsorship and a venue to hold the program in.

The program would benefit 2007 Seniors who are getting ready for College and those who are in college looking for a comprehensive preventative program for their safety. This would help them stay safe during their summer jobs as well benefiting local businesses who hire them by lowering the possibility of workplace accidents,

A simple fix: When my son would get bullied, I told to knock the bully flat on his BOOGEDY, and that'd solve the problem, then I'd deal with the parents.

I'm a veteran television news reporter who has spent her entire career working in the St. Louis market. I came to Missouri from Buffalo, N.Y. to attend the University of Missouri Journalism School in Columbia and never looked back. St. Louis is an interesting town with plenty of stories to share. I'm always looking for one, but politics and education are my passions.
