As a reporter I do get to know many candidates in the course of a campaign. Naturally I have even more contact with those who are elected and serve in government. So people often ask me what are these people really like. I can tell you, despite the nasty advertising in the Missouri U.S. Senate race, both Claire McCaskill and Jim Talent are pleasant people who generally give straight answers with a mimimum of political spin to reporters' questions. Both have worked hard in their current jobs (McCaskill as MO State Auditor and Talent as the incumbent U.S. Senator). They express themselves well and appear to be able to understand complicated issues. The real issues for voters in this race are political ones.

Ms. Bruce: I've been wondering if you'd be getting a blog. You are one of my favorites at FOX 2. Even though I live in Nashville, TN now days I still keep up with things here. Look forward to reading more of your posts. :)

It is hard to view them the way you have expressed thier personalities as from the Campaign Ads we see the worst of them. And sadly that seems to be our view.

I know it's Betsy Bruce but I started watching you when you were Betsy Barnett. I have no idea why I remember that. I have always enjoyed your style of reporting and wonder how in the world you decide how to vote. I am sure it is not ethical in your profession but your opinon on those running and the issues we are asked to vote on would be interesting.

You are correct it is not ethical or wise for a reporter to take a public stand on a political candidate. But I will say I have never voted a "straight ticket." I want to know first if a candidate is prepared to handle the responsibilities of a particular office. I like to see how they interact with citizens and whether they can think on their feet when challenged by voters or reporters. Then I want to know how knowledgeable the candidate is about issues he or she would face if elected. After that I look at particular issues and how the candidate's views match up with my own. Voting in a democracy isn't easy. But the only way our nation will survive as we know it is for citizens to make "educated" decisions in the voting booth.

I knew that would be your answer..! I agree with you and I have never made one X either. I am somewhat a public person in my community and although I don't have signs in my yard or bumper stickers, I enjoy engaging in good political discussion. By the time I get to the voting booth I have read everything on the ballot and know exactly how I will vote. Thanks for your comments.

I'm a veteran television news reporter who has spent her entire career working in the St. Louis market. I came to Missouri from Buffalo, N.Y. to attend the University of Missouri Journalism School in Columbia and never looked back. St. Louis is an interesting town with plenty of stories to share. I'm always looking for one, but politics and education are my passions.
