It’s a sad day in Maplewood and across the St. Louis area.
A suburban St. Louis firefighter was killed and two other emergency workers are wounded after a gunman opened fire during a standoff at his home in Maplewood. Maplewood city officials identified the slain firefighter as 22-year-old Ryan Hummert. Officials said he was shot to death as he got off the fire truck.
Hummert was the son of former Maplewood Mayor Andy Hummert. He began his career in August 2007 after graduating from paramedic training. He graduated from the St. Louis County Fire Academy in March.
The thoughts and prayers of those of us here at FOX 2 and with the community of Maplewood today. If you'd like to leave your thoughts, please do so in the comments section below.

What is wrong with people in this area right now? I know that the economy is very depressing but that is no excuse to take it out on unsuspecting people.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this young man and with the City of Maplewood.

Ryan Hummert is My newest Hero. He was doing a Job most people couldn't. Serving our Country & keeping us save. Risking His life and paying the ultimate price with His own life to save others. I know His Father and He also serve our Country in a different way. This is a very special Family. Be proud of Your Son Andy. It's hard not to be sad and it will never go away, but when it pain starts to ease be proud. Be very proud of Your Noble Son Ryan. Tears are rolling down my face as I type this. I'm so sorry. Ryan is a Hero with the Good Lord now! May God Bless You and Your family in this time of so much pain.

Maplewood used to be one of the nicest neighborhoods.

I lived over on Lansdown and we shopped in Maplewood. I loved it then. WHAT HAPPENED????

You know I will be very upset if the police have been waiting all this time to storm this home for this person just to find he has been long gone now for hours. Should of shot tear gas into the house. Doesn't make me feel very safe right now.

It is very sad that some spoon fed board of directors in the area do nothing but bad mouth and take pay and benefits from men and women that put their lives on the line for the rest of us everyday. God Bless this young man and his family!

First MY THOUGHT AND PRAYERS FOR THE FAMILY. Second, so whats going on he has burned his house down and they dont know if was inside or not? I know it was a dangerous sitution but why they wait so long they should of stormed in that house a long time ago, hes probley killed his self any way. I thought this is why taticts teams train for this kind of stuff not to sit and wait for a house to burn down before ending a very dangerous sitution for all those people living in that area.

That's the main point. They have watched a house burn down and they have no idea if the gunman let alone possible hostages were in the house. Way to go SWAT. If this young man has died and they don't find the person accountable for this, this will be an even more sad day to know this man person is getting away with this.
