a hurricane was approached by a smaller and weaker Low Pressure system? Would it change course?? Would it "swallow up" the smaller Low and strengthen? What would happen if a  hurricane is approached by a High Pressure system?? Would it change course or weaken??

Herbert Saffir, who devised a scale to measure hurricane intensity in 1969, answers questions from the media after a news conference announcing the reclassification of Hurricane Andrew in this Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, file photo in Miami. Saffir, an engineer created the five-category system used to describe hurricane strength and warn millions of an approaching storm's danger. By JESSICA GRESKO
Associated Press Writer

MIAMI -- Herbert Saffir, an engineer who created the five-category system used to describe hurricane strength and warn millions of an approaching storm's danger, has died. He was 90.

Saffir died Wednesday of complications from surgery, said his son, Richard Saffir.

A structural engineer, Saffir created his scale in 1969 -- laying out for the first time what kind of damage could be expected from an approaching hurricane. It has since become the definitive way to describe intensity for storms that form in the Atlantic and parts of the Pacific. Before the scale, hurricanes were simply described as major or minor.

Ahh, the changing season is upon us!! Gone is the hot-sticky weather (although we may see some "warmer" weather, but not in the upper 90s to 100s!!!). In years past, we would see Nature's paintbrush stroke the leaves of the trees with brilliant and vibrant colors! (But, since we had the drought this year, it may not be as brilliant and vibrant!).

I've always loved the changing seasons. Hot weather makes me appreciate the cooler weather and cold weather makes me appreciate warmer weather. But, my favorite seasons are the seasons of change: Spring and Autumn! Spring, because it is the re-birth of Nature and the dawning of warmer weather. The green-ness of the grass and trees are especially beautiful after months of white and brown! Autumn, because it brings with it cooler weather and brilliant vibrant colored leaves in the trees!!!

It seems to be important enough to repeat!

Stay out of the heat as much as possible. Stay in airconditioned areas and if you have airconditioning at home, use it!

Drink plenty of water and then some. Drink enough water until you have to go to urinate. When you feel thirsty, you are significantly dehydrated. Drink enough water until you have to urinate.

Check on elderly and disabled people. If they don't have a/c, invite them to your a/c home for a meal and some rest. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and other chronic diseases cannot tolerate high temperatures. Also, small children and enfants cannot tolerate high temperatures as well.

Eat light meals and eat often to keep up  your strength.

If you feel very ill (very hot, no sweating, trouble breathing, chest pains, dizziness or fainting) call 9-1-1 immediately and get to the closest Emergency Department as possible!

The people at the various Emergency Medical Services and Fire Departments in the area are available to assist you 24/7. Just call them!

My new avitar is of my cat, "Max." I work in the insurance industry, but I am interested in healthcare, (I worked as an EMT for St. Louis EMS from 1984-1989 and was in the field for over 10 years) social welfare issues, (I have a bachelor's degree in Social Work from UMSL) politics, religions of all sorts and racial and cultural relations. I have a new cat named "Max" whom I picked up from the animal shelter. He is a younger version of "Socks" my old cat. I enjoy Classical and Jazz Music, although I cannot read music nor play any instrument. I love baseball, but I am not athletic. I love to watch the weather and even watch the NOAA weather radars while at work. Weather is sort of a hobby of mine. I am a "healthy skeptic" when it comes to politicians and all things political.
