The recent story about the off-duty St. Louis County police officer and his family on St. Patrick's Day was most disturbing! The officer allegedly flourished his side arm to a property owner because that officer wanted to park there, on the property owner's private land! The City Police responded and made a report. I don't know if the officer was ever arrested, but the City Circuit Attorney's Office has taken the case "Under Advisement."

In my experience with St. Louis City Emergency Medical Services and spending much time in the various police district houses (where we were assigned to), I begin to understand the process of our Criminal Justice System. The term, Under Advisement" meant (at the time) that the Circuit Attorney was not planning to take any action in the case. This means that the case will not be pursued nor will the defendant be tried in court. Therefore, this St. Louis County police officer will not be charged nor tried under State Law for "flourishing a weapon in public."

What are your thoughts on this matter??

They should bring a civil suit against the officer and file a law suit against the police DEPARTMENT itself.

This story compelled me to tell you another story about a police officer, this one flourishes his authority. First off I respect police officers and one of their biggest defenders, it is the bad apple police officers that need something done about.

In south StL City I have an elderly relative scared to death to speak up or leave the house. There is a police officer who lives on the block who has his own way of threatening people. If your skin color is not the right color or if you speak with an accent, he will or his wife will chase you out of the neighborhood. Just the ones I know about a hispanic family and a family from Tawain have been forced to move out of fear. The wife does the dirty work to keep her husband's hands clean. Other prejudice neighbors help the police officer's cause.

What can you do? Those who tried to speak out in the name of justice started being harrassed. What use to be a nice friendly place in the City has turned into tension, wondering if you are the next one on the list.

As I have commented in my blog similar to this, I think he should be fired. Who cares if daddy is a police chief in another department. Hmmmm, favoritism? YEP, you betcha. I dont think he was ever arrested, at least I don't recall reading or hearing that. I could be wrong though. This is a poor, very poor excuse of a police officer.

And when you had a problem, they would be the first ones that you would call.

"Under Advisement" works well in this case. He's not going to have an easy waltz in front of IAD or whatever they call themselves now at County. He'll probably pay with his job.

Maybe I'm simple minded but I do think that if he wasn't an officer and he did the same thing, he would have charges brought against him. I think that all should be the same under the law. What distresses me is that a few bad officers give the whole group a bad name. It reminds me of the way the health care system protects doctors who are accused of malpractice.

He needs to lose more than his job. Abuse of power should be considered a serious offense against society, as should brandishing a firearm. What if someone had pulled a gun a shot him 'in self defense', even though he had initiated the threat, the escalation would as well have been his fault. IT IS INEXCUSABLE. 90 days, loss of license to every carry a firearm again, never a cop again, and never a civil service job.

Was there any witnesses?

I would think you may need some witnesses to in order to prove that the lot owner isnt lying?

My new avitar is of my cat, "Max." I work in the insurance industry, but I am interested in healthcare, (I worked as an EMT for St. Louis EMS from 1984-1989 and was in the field for over 10 years) social welfare issues, (I have a bachelor's degree in Social Work from UMSL) politics, religions of all sorts and racial and cultural relations. I have a new cat named "Max" whom I picked up from the animal shelter. He is a younger version of "Socks" my old cat. I enjoy Classical and Jazz Music, although I cannot read music nor play any instrument. I love baseball, but I am not athletic. I love to watch the weather and even watch the NOAA weather radars while at work. Weather is sort of a hobby of mine. I am a "healthy skeptic" when it comes to politicians and all things political.
