HAVANA —The Cuban National Assembly voted Raúl Castro as its new president on Sunday, the first time the country has had a new leader since his brother Fidel seized power in 1959.

Mr. Castro, the 76-year-old armed forces minister, had been widely expected to be named president by the 614 members of the assembly. Mr. Castro, dressed in a gray suit and steel-colored tie, cast the first vote for president of the assembly with a smile and wave at about 11:15 a.m. Fidel Castro was said to be too ill to attend the meeting, and he voted through a proxy.

The ballot contained 31 names for the top positions in the country, among them president, minister of interior and minister of the armed forces. The delegates have no choice, because there is only one name for each position. The candidates were not immediately made public.

Wow, such a surprise. A dictator passes power to his dictator brother and they call it an election.

That's one thing I like about Cuban elections.

At least they are honest and don't pretend like citizens have a choice - like we do, for instance!

A nation is only as good as its leaders - whether elected or not. And this realist is still convinced, after reading much about Castro over the last 40 years, that MOST Cubans are FAR better off with him than they would have with the previous rule of wealthy corporate control.

Most of the lower-working-class Cubans have jobs, state-of-the-art health insurance and medical facilities, food on the table, and a guaranteed pension for life.

With the previous corporate rule, they would have been living in poverty.

Of course, the most aggressive and assertive among the Cubans can not have their giant Hummers and 100-acre plantations, I know. It must be so hard for them!

Doesn't matter - most of "those types" moved to the U.S. years ago and now own most of the quick marts in the country. So they can have their Hummers they so need to live a full life!

Let's focus on our coming election, shall we? Let's see if it offers any more choice than the one they have in Cuba. Far-right, or extremist far-right. Hmmmm - not much of a choice, it seems to me.... LOL

Run down your country you idiots! But I don't see any of you packing up to move to Cuba.
One of your hero's, Michael Moore says how wonderful Cuba is but he also is still here!

They've always lived in poverty, and Castro didn't improve their lot by any stretch of the imagination.

And miamiman is correct. Have some conversations with Cuban exiles and see just how wonderful it was. The ones that didn't die trying to cross the ocean...

Michael Moore is no hero of ours. In fact, I'm pretty sure he hates me, since I flunked his movie "Sicko" in my review...

Just look at the original post and where its from.....the New York Slimes. They've never met a tyrant/dictator that they're not in love with.

Raul and Che Guvera ran the prisons and performed all the executions on political prisoners after Fidel came to power. Nice set of guys, so says the Slimes, but nobody ever challenges them on it.

My new avitar is of my cat, "Max." I work in the insurance industry, but I am interested in healthcare, (I worked as an EMT for St. Louis EMS from 1984-1989 and was in the field for over 10 years) social welfare issues, (I have a bachelor's degree in Social Work from UMSL) politics, religions of all sorts and racial and cultural relations. I have a new cat named "Max" whom I picked up from the animal shelter. He is a younger version of "Socks" my old cat. I enjoy Classical and Jazz Music, although I cannot read music nor play any instrument. I love baseball, but I am not athletic. I love to watch the weather and even watch the NOAA weather radars while at work. Weather is sort of a hobby of mine. I am a "healthy skeptic" when it comes to politicians and all things political.
