How many ways can we be fleeced....??

Have you ever thought of an obituary to be classified as an advertisement ? .....  Growing up I always read an obit and considered it to be news and a small tribute to ones life here on earth ...... Well these days the "" (Community)"" newspapers seem to look at it to be an inconvienience and if you want any more than a name and time of service posted in the paper you are going to have to pay a hefty sum....... The Journal has just jumped on to this trend and will charge you $ 150 to print an obit..... I was told the Post charges as much as $ 500 if you want a photo included ...... I wonder if they will follow suit and start charging for other community services that are supposed to be free such as wedding announcements and birth announcements..... Will blood drives have to go under paid advertisements ......  If you go to the papers web site and look up an obit on line you will still find it under the news tab ..... Should it not be under classifieds ...... If you are wondering what the bottom of your pockets look like all you have to do is give them a little time and you'll find out ....... The world needs some new ideas........... What should they start charging for next......??

I think the Current and the Leader will still print a free Obit....... With all the junk charges that are surfacing in the world I wonder how anybody is going to be able to afford anything.......

First off I would be ticked off big time if my family spent $500 on a obituary. I'm dead. If they want to honor me donate the money to charity not some after-death personal advertisment.

The people who know me know who I am and dont need a full page story. If you dont know me then why do you care how many grandkids I have or where I graduated high school? Its TOO LATE to get to know me now.

For some families its like a contest. The bigger the ad the more loved that person was. The papers may just profiting off this NEED to prove how loved this now deceased person was.

WHen my grandmother died in 83 it cost us $45.00 for her obit in the paper, we didn't even know they charged for an obit, it was included on the funeral bill from the funeral home. They did send up a laminated obit with roses on it from the newspaper a few months later. I also didn't know you had to pay the reverend to say a service for the dead either until her death, had to pay him $35.00 for a 20 minute sermon. Isn't anything in this world for free anymore???? GEESH!

The only free obit I was offered was for the local small town papers. All the others, the POST, the ILLINOIS STATE JOURNAL_REGISTER and the Alton Telegragh, they all wanted no less than a $100 for it.
Our pastor charged $100 for the funeral service, but in turn, he gave it back to the funeral director to put on the funeral bill.
It is rediculous to charge for obit notices. They should be charging for engagements and births like Mr_Wild said.

Recent experience with the Post-Disposal was a $350 charge for an obit.

With their circulation drying up and advertising revenues down because of reduced circulation (which I suspect is due to their editorial leanings) and the fact that the NEA is producing a crop of people who are barely literate, they've got to get the money from somewhere to keep it afloat.

I worked for postnet.com (it now has another name) about 10 years ago and they said the paper had always charged for obits.

They have always considered them a classified, this is nothing new ... and at the time, you could only find them under the classified listings online ...

... I had to answer all the e-mails asking where they were.

My mom died almost 8 years ago and her Obit wasn't that big. We were charged 175.00 for it. Same thing with ads for homes for sale. My sellers wanted me to run an ad in the post. I paid 295.00 for it and I didn't get one call on it like I did on the Journal ads which are cheaper

How I love small town life. As far as I know there is no charge for the obituary, its a community service. The funeral homes put out the death cards too, its great, if you don't hear about the death by word of mouth or on the community deaths over the radio you can go into almost every business in town and there it is with all the info. We even have cemeteries around here where you don't even have to buy your plot. Small town life is great!

Yes some have been doing it for a lot of years and as time goes on more and more of the small papers are following suit..... The Journal just started charging a couple of weeks ago...They are a business but every business has things that they do for the community.... It's called giving back to those who help you make a living... It does not seem to aply in the modern world..... I'm beginning to believe that Newspapers are going to become like T V repair shops down the road..... The net is going to swallow them up....

In todays world the media is the cornerstone of what society is and does so it would make sense that people are paying dearly to take part in the advertising frenzy. Its the way of corporate America for the consumer to pay for everything that they do, if not up front they'll let ya make payments. It gets worse when find out what is actuall being paid for: our own deaths. Which brings me to a question, what does the American People think about FEMA operated concentration camps, sorry, 'civilaian labor camps' poping up all over America that come complete with rail access, barbed-wire fencing/guard towers, gas chambers and furnaces? What do you think? Is it time to wake up and start thinking for ourselves or is it more of a sign to go back to sleep and let our government keep 'on track' with operations like this? Follow the link to view the video and think for yourself.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!
