This could save a lot of fingers.....!!

contractor_saw_large.jpg picture by mr_wildflower

My hat goes off to whoever invented this saw..... I sat and visited with a gentleman today that has lost all of his fingers on one hand to a saw..... My father is missing two of his fingers due to a table saw..... Many kids get hurt in shop class every year by saws and other equipment.....  OSHA has made things better but there are still a lot of improvements that we could accomplish in the blue collar industry.... Watch the neat video below......

Is your place of work as safe as it can be....??

I am totally amazed that the saw cuts through the wood but disengages when it comes in contact with the hot dog...... Wow what technology.....

I've seen demonstrations of this saw, but, don't know of anyone or anyplace that is actually using one. The triggering mechanism works by the fact that hot dogs (and fingers) conduct electricity, and dry wood does not. If you're using this saw to cut 'green' wood, wood that is damp, certain composite materials that contain metals, etc., it would probably trigger falsely. And, if it does get triggered, the block that gets shoved against the blade to stop it has to be replaced, along with the blade itself. I don't know how much those blocks cost, but, a good saw blade can run upwards of $100. Could be pretty costly if it triggers falsely.

I know, someone will say that it's worth the price of a finger(s), but, I'd disagree. If you consider the number of table saws in use, versus the number of times they have severed fingers, I'll bet the odds of severing a finger are quite small.

Another gimmick that will be required by OSHA that will reduce productivity even further resulting in the loss of American jobs and higher prices.

All this for nothing that can't be cured by paying attention to what you're doing. The nanny state moves forward!
