The First Was The Best....!!

Sportsman_Park.jpg Sportsman Park image by crennier

I miss Sportsman Park.....Not so much the park, but the atmosphere created by the players and the people that attended the games there....... Busch Stadium was ok, but it marked the beginning of  commercializing the game and when new Busch Stadium was born, the game became a full blown business...... At  Sportsman Park I was a little boy that went to the game with his dad and his uncles.....  Got to watch some of the greatest players and usually sat in fantastic seats...... At  Bush Stadium early I was the young man that went with friends and later on I  was the father that watched his son sit there with the glove on his hand hoping for a foul ball and remembering that little boy still lurking somewhere inside me...... The new stadium finds me in my  "( young )" fifties sitting in nosebleed seats...... Due to the now business part of the game the expensive tickets of desire are bought up and resold, or occupied by season ticket holders...... Bleacher spaces have dwindled in lieu of party boxes and the seats are smaller and closer together...... Going to a game for a family of four may cost as much as a weeks wage for some...... Hopefully  the tradition of the game will live on and make more great memories for a lot of little boys..... I wish there was a tee shirt for us old guys that said " Three stadium club member "

I'm sure it would cost at least $30 though......

What's your fondest memory at the ball park....??

At Sportsman Park a lot of people had transistor radios and would listen to Harry Carry and watch the game......

I agree with you about the state of the commercialization of the game. Sportsman Park must have been really cool. When I lived in Chicago, some fans took the Cubs to court because the team was selling available tickets to a ticket brokerage firm that the team itself owned. The team won the case and continues this practice. Getting a regular game ticket in Chicago is impossible for the average fan. I ahte to see that happening here.

Being a few years younger than you, have no personal recollections of Sportsman's Park except from pictures when my brother played a game there in Khoury League. The '80s do have memories-my then boyfriend's sister-in-law was both Whitey's and Dal Maxvill's assistant, so often had access to their personal seats a few rows behind home plate. (She still works in the front office). We shared the same row with Mary Lou Herzog (Whitey's wife) and "Butz" Herzog (Whitey's brother). Butz was a real character! Before that, knew Harry Caray slightly in the '60s through my sister, who was his family's nanny for about a year, although I was only 10-11 yrs. old at the time.
There was excitement during the Mark McGwire years and witnessed a few of those home runs, but it isn't the same anymore. Only go to a few games a year nowadays.

Well actually the new resembles the old sportsman park in a lot of ways..... It was just the atmosphere of the old park in the late fifties and early 60's that can't be matched and never will.... There is nothing but people that are looking for ways to make money off of you when you go to the park now.... It is hard to explain but there was some magic in the past that just don't exist in this era......
