Did you know that our Federal Government is buy their computer equipment from Dell which outsources their manufacturing to China and Mexico. We get equipment in from Dell all the time and I am tired of seeing our tax money being used to purchase products from Mexico and especially China. This is our money and with the news reporting how bad the housing market is along with the credit crunch plus jobs are down, unemployment is up, inflation is up, gas prices are up...Any American would figure that its own government, Federal and State, should be purchasing from American companies that manufacture computer equipment right here in America.  So why don't they? One may make the assumption that there are no American companies that build good quality computer equipment. I must say to them that MPC Corporation (formerly MIcron PC) is very big in America and has quality as good or better than Dell. MPC has acquired Gateway Computers as well. Their headquarters is located here in America, Their equipment is manufactured here in America and believe it or not...their tech support is located, yep, right here in America. I know, I could hardly believe it myself. so I think that it is an outrage that our government is spending millions of $$$ a year on equipment from China and Mexico when they could be buying American made products and helping our economy at the same time. What is going on in this country and with a Government that is supposed to be for the people and by the people? It seems to me that our Government has changed what our founding fathers put in place at some point when we were not watching to a Government for the Corporations and by the Corporations!

I agree....but they let most of our jobs go overseas .... It'll take a long time to convince them to change their ways.... Maybe when there is no body left with a job and we can no longer pay their fat salaries they will get a new attitude....

Ive never heard of that company but i'll look them up

"Our" tax dollars are spent on all kinds of things I don't approve of. But since not ALL people will ever agree on what "our" tax dollars should be spent on there will always be those who don't like something about the way "our" tax dollars are being spent.

THeShan2007, that may be but it is NO excuse to use our tax money by being counter productive to our economy and country. We may not all agree on what to spend our money on but when it comes to spending money on American products or something made in China or Mexico...I'll bet if you honestly ask 10 people, 10 people will choose to spend that money on American products!

What is even worse is that the Fed sends out bids for these products and it often costs more for a product than it would if they picked up a phone and ordered one. Remember the $25 toilet plunger? Just a prime example of our government waste at work.

In this case, there wasn't a bid. The person doing the ordering just decided that they wanted Dell outsourced equipmnet and made the purchase. So not only is this a waste of money but it doesn't give American companies the chance to bid. I sent an email to Elliot Davis but I guess something like this isn't good enough for "You Paid For IT!"

Well, your example leaves something to be desired. Being an Information Technology professional, I have to say something.

Now, I agree with alot of what you say, however, to say that MPCs quality is on par with Dell is a joke at best. Dell's quality isn't spectacular, but at least with Dell, you get what you pay for and you can pretty much bet that the PC is going to last at least 5 years.

The fact that MPC has bought Gateway is no feather in their cap, as Gateway, since it's inception, has produced some of the poorest quality computers ever made. If this purchase was meant to "upgrade" MPC, they sorely missed the boat.

If you purely want quality, HP is the way to go for PCs these days. If you want bang for your buck either A) Buy the parts and assemble yourself, or B) Buy a Dell.

Sorry, that's just the way it is. No offense, but the government squanders enough of our money. Using Dell is smart, from a business perspective.

We have both HP and Dell at the center. I shop around for the best quality for the few dollars we have access to. Fortunately we've upgraded our systems over the past two years and thanks to organizations, such as Tech Soup, we don't have to pay extravagantly for our software (which is a major cost of new systems). Our Small Business Server software was less than $100, compared to over $1,000 retail.

I don't care what anyone says about Microsoft or Bill Gates. They do help non-profits with their charity.

This isn't about a "Business Perspective", its about spending our money on American made products. I agree that MPC didn't put a feather in their cap by the aqusition of Dell because that wasn't their plan. Their plan was to take a sub-par PC manufacturing company and begin making them better under the MPC name. As Americans and tax payers we should be adoment about having out tax money being spent by government agencies spend their money on American made ONLY products. Stop supporting these American based companies who outsorce their labor to countries who use their workers as slaves for pennies a day. Invest in this country, invest in our technology so American made technology is second best to none, invest in today and the future of this country. "Business Perspective"? You can dump that right out the window unless your all about screwing American workers and selling out this country to cheap foreign labor with our tax money. From a business standpoint or a personal one, I would rather spend the extra money to have American products. I work for the Fed Gov't so I know my job is safe regardless but you...keep buying those deals that Dell sells and maybe someday soon your job with go to someone from Singapore insourced or outsourced!

Tis unfortunant, but it seems as though the majority of American products really arn't American made, the consumer is only led to belive they are american made, where actually maybe only one part of the assembly process is conducted in the US so that a made in the USA sticker can be placed on them. So my question to you, how can the buyer beware when there is such under handed manufactures out there?

destiny1224...it is really unfortunate that our gov't plays the games they do with their own people. The American consumer must think on a much higher level than politicians and corporations and just do the research on a company. It is hard and almost immpossible to find a complete product that has numerous parts such as an automobile, to have the entire product made from 100% American parts and assembled right here in America. Times are definately changing and I just totally boycott all products that exclusively say they are made in PRC, China Taiwan, etc...I know that if I at least buy something that does say made in the USA even though that may not be entirely true, I know there was an American worker or two who earned a paycheck doing something to that product, probably something to make it better. This isn't a perfect system but it is a start to getting more jobs and more products made here in the USA.
