I encourage everyone to give their EOB or explanation of Benefits or medical bill a second over.  Thank goodness I did.  It happened to me twice and my boyfriend once.  But because I was on top of it, it was corrected.  Granted I had to apply pressure (nicely) but it was corrected.  Two doctors we will not be seeing again, although one went out of business.  Gee's I wonder why.

This article was emailed to me.  It is very important that you read it as well.  It is courtsey of MSNBC. The header reads: "Medical Bill errors becoming more common".

When I had my first child, January 1999, the insurance company was billed for something (can't remember anymore, but it was a medication) that I never received. I remember it was a fairly common med, but I never needed it.
With all the "new baby" stuff going on, I never did call the hospital to complain. I would be willing to bet a large sum that virtually ALL medical billing (from hospitals) has extra padding.
No wonder insurance costs are so high.

I didn't read the article, Mandm, but I know from personal experience that both padding and errors have been going on for decades, and it isn't as rare or as new as some tell us. I've seen and heard some real horror stories on this subject. Everyone should doublecheck everything and get it corrected quickly. Most in the medical community will cooperate if you show them the error, but some are a nightmare.

Great blog and yes check it out. They "mess" things like add extra visits for Pre-Op or calculate 88% coverage if you have 90%. It's the little things that reduced the price of my shoulders to only $50,000! LOL - yeah it was covered on insurance. It's also funny when you see the bill you have 3 sets of numbers. One, the "actual" charge....$25,000...then a discount of $22,000...new net due is $3,000 (contractual amount of Doctor) and then take your percentages. I can honestly say that if it weren't for insurance....I'd be LEANING left (Dem) and right (Rep)...LOL!

I know that once a local hospital tried to bill my insurance for deoderant that I never used. Since the insurance didn't cover items like that I was billed. The hospital told me it was for the bath that I received during my 16 hour stay there. I had never received a bath and had witnesses (my hubbie). I fought it and forced them to remove the charges. It's horrible that hospitals do such things. I think it is to get extra money to cover for those who can't and don't pay their bills.

AMEN! This is a great and sad blog. Sad because elderly, people with cancer or another disease that requires many visits and treatments do not have the energy to fight these criminal medical billings. Who is at fault? The billing office? The insurance company? They do not care they expect you to figure it out or pay it. We are going through ONE test ordered by a in network UNITED HEALTHCARE MD before he could do surgery on my feet. OK I am a good pateint(because I have worked Social services for 11 years and help hundereds of Seniors figure out their bills and Medicare)I call second office to check do you take UHC, are you in network... I get procedure MAy 30th,2007. Myself and my hisband have made over 30 phone calls, written 3 appeals(even with mailing confirmation they said they didn't get them??) We are being billed my cop ay plus 2300! I have heard so many different answers my head is spinning and I thought I waas an EXPERT! They refuse to talk billing dept to insurance company they want you to somehow know their CODES?! I pay for insurance, I am covered for 90% of in office diagnostic testing and I have heard--too many units, not on plan, unites should be coded blah blah blah, not medically neccesary, not covered, but the best one...I SHOULD OF WENT TO THE EMERGEMCY ROOM TO HAVE DIAGNOSTIC TESTING Are you kidding me? Do they think we are all stupid?!! And then as mentioned if the insurance would pay their part it would probally be DISCOUNTED to 400.00 dollars!!!!I have had all of my primary, Gyno and podiatrist say UHC are idiots and DO NOT WANT TO PAY! No healthcare shou

I used to work at Blue Cross Blue Shield and yes alot of claims were filed incorrectly and billed incorrectly. they have a whole department devoted to fixing claims(that is where I worked). There are so many codes that it is very easy for the doctors office to put the wrong code and the claim will not pay with the wrong code so always watch the eob's!!
