NEW YORK (AP) -- Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan apartment, naked in bed with sleeping pills nearby, police said. The Australian-born actor was 28. It wasn't immediately clear if Ledger had committed suicide.

He had an appointment for a massage at a residence in the tony neighborhood of SoHo, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. A housekeeper who went to let him know the massage therapist had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

A large crowd of paparazzi and gawkers gathered outside the building on an upscale block. Ledger's body was still inside, and several police officers guarded the door.

The medical examiner's office planned an autopsy Wednesday, spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said.

While not a marquee movie star, Ledger was a respected, award-winning actor who chose his roles carefully rather than cashing in on his heartthrob looks. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance as a gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain," where he met Michelle Williams, who played his wife in the film. The two had a daughter, Matilda, and lived together in Brooklyn until they split up last year.

Ledger most recently appeared in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan - as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

Ledger had finished filming his role as the Joker this year in "The Dark Knight," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins."

He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball." He also played a heroin addict in the 2006 Australian film "Candy."

Before settling down with Williams, Ledger had relationships with actresses Heather Graham and Naomi Watts. He met Watts while working on "The Lords of Dogtown," a fictionalized version of a cult classic skateboarding documentary, in 2004.

Ledger was born in 1979 in Perth, in western Australia, to a mining engineer and a French teacher, and got his first acting role playing Peter Pan at age 10 at a local theater company. He began acting in independent films as a 16-year-old in Sydney and played a cyclist hoping to land a spot on an Olympic team in a 1996 television show, "Seat."

After several independent films, Ledger moved to Los Angeles at age 19 and co-starred opposite Julia Stiles in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew."

Offers for other teen flicks soon came his way, but Ledger turned them down, preferring to remain idle than sign on for projects he didn't like.

"It wasn't a hard decision for me," Ledger told the Associated Press in 2001. "It was hard for everyone else around me to understand. Agents were like, `You're crazy,' my parents were like, `Come on, you have to eat.'"

His movie career caught on anyway, culminating with his Academy Award nomination opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in "Brokeback."

"Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan said earlier this month that Ledger's performance as the Joker would be wildly different than Jack Nicholson's memorable turn in 1989's "Batman."

"It was a very great challenge for Heath," Nolan said. "He's extremely original, extremely frightening, tremendously edgy. A very young character, a very anarchic presence that taps into a lot of our basic fears and panic."

So what's the big deal here? What you have is another drug addict that has OD'ed on his favorite pharmaceutical of choice.

"What's the big deal" is that he was a very talented actor and it's a shame that we won't have any more movies with him starring in them.

It amazes me how some are so quick to judge. "another drug addict..." Really? Because you knew him personally to come to that conclusion? Oh, well... all of this criticism coming from someone calling themself "chickenkiller" and using a southpark avatar, LOL. pathetic.

The Media has taught people to be quick at drawing conclusions. They do it everyday, live from the scene usually. LOL
Death is always sad.

will have to see, but won't surprise me if he had a secret drug habit. Most of the hollywood stars have them. Will see.

It wouldn't "surprise" me either if he had a drug habit. But I hope that's not the case.

He seemed to be a good guy and such a talented actor. He had a lot to live for and seemed to know it.

All those photographers flashing pics as his body was rolled out, pretty tacky and un-necessary. No respect.

He said on a talk show he had been taking sleeping pills since the filming of his last movie. If you are a junkie you normally dont announce it to everyone so readily.

In the end it doesnt really matter, dead is dead, regardless of how he got here.

He still has one more movie coming out. The next batman, not sure when it comes out but they were talking about it on sirius this morning, he supposedly plays the joker in the newest one. I always liked his movies. He's a good actor.

In a word its the media , and the publics fault for buying into the hype of a 'star' and supporting the trash talking TV and ragsmags, that cause the stars to feel so overwhelmed.
Drug addiction hurts us all

I saw on one of the national news tv stations that Gretta someone or other, don't know her last name was interviewing the head guy from TMZ and that guy said the Heath did have issues. It seems that a lot of the stars have issues. We never heard anything about Heath having problems nor with Owen Wilson and look what he tried to do. These two weren't in the spotlight like Britney, Paris, Lindsay, etc. It is a shame that Heath couldn't get help. Maybe he was just so down, well obviously he was, that he wanted his life to end and he got his way. It is very sad.

MoHHS - ""What's the big deal" is that he was a very talented actor and it's a shame that we won't have any more movies with him starring in them." Well, that's about as good as the Menendez brothers crying in the courtroom that they were 'sorry' that they wouldn't have their parents insights and guidance through life after they shotgunned both of them at close range.

Nogoodnamesleft - to suggest that this was the "fault of the media" carries about as much water as a claim that "a fork is responsible for Rosie O'Donnell's fat BOOGEDY."

The guy had a drug problem, he put the drugs in his own mouth and he did himself in either by wish or by stupidity. It's a lesson in life.

Yes, Heath was a wonderful "actor". Talented. I am probably one of the few who absolutely loved "Knights Tale". It also saddens me when a young life is cut short. Also, agree, once there…dead is dead so it doesn't really matter what got anyone there - won't change the outcome but…my concern over any of these deaths is why do we as individuals place so much importance on this loss - he provided us "entertainment"…

What about the 61 year old lady in Michigan City, IND who was found dead frozen in her home because she was conserving heat? She was under the covers with many layers of clothing, socks and hats on. Or the 9 year old boy who died in Davis, OK and donated his tissues and organs to save others. Or the 94-year-old man who should have been able to spend his last years peacefully swinging on his porch swing yet was found January 22nd fatally beaten in a thicket of bushes, his left hand cut off after a "botched" robbery. Finally, what about the 56 year old father of 6 who was being a "good Samaritan" and was killed while helping someone in need change a flat tire?

Are these lives any less important than an actors? Why do we feel the need to place such importance on these individuals? Again, a truly sad loss for Heath's family and friends (but none of us knew him personally) - just like the loss of all these other individuals whose lives ended on January 22, 2008. What makes it so important that it takes up our news time and efforts? Aren't there more important things to worry about? Why can't these people live a semi-normal existence and in death…why can't

Exsuit-

I loved Knights Tale too!

As to the rest of your post....It would take too long to even attempt to list all of the tragedies and deaths happening on a daily basis. Sad isn't it?
