Playing around with my new little point and shoot camera, most of these were taken while out shopping and walking through the garden area. Nothing super special in these, still thought I would share them with you all.

The last photo was pretty flat, needless to say that is not how it normally looks, I punched up the color some for effect.

There will be a sign up page for the Botanical Garden Photography Class (still don't like that word for this..), just so I know who will be going and can communicate with you all a bit easier. Eventually there will be a forum for all of you to upload your work, get critiques, ask for advice or anything else dealing with the photography classes/seminars.

Found out last night my studio partner is leaving for sure, means I have the place to myself now, along with his share of the rent......ouch......not sure what is going on there yet though, have to talk to the owner of the Koken Art Factory first. Sunday I get to do a shoot with my pregnant model, something I am truly looking forward to doing. Personally I find that to be one of the most beautiful things in the world, I just hope I can that kind of beauty justice.

Oh the soft focus photo in the middle is available in wallpaper size 1600x1200 so it should fit just about any screen, if you want a smaller size just say so. Image can be found here - Wallpaper or here in the wallpaper section of the site - Wallpaper Gallery @ Insomniac Studios

I am off to try and get a couple hours of sleep, cleaned the studio last night, needless to say that has me in a lot more pain than normal, which just adds to my insomnia. The warm weather is here though, that means bicycling season is here and I can get some MUCH needed exercise and get some of this pain under better control.

Have a great day and a great upcoming weekend everyone. Hope the photos gave you a good start to your day!

John W

NICE! Love the color choices and thx 4 the wallpaper. I've heard that terminology used before, "point 'n shoot". Is that a particular brand name for a camera or one of the (less expensive) cameras you made reference to in one of your earlier blogs?

A point n shoot camera is ALL brands! It is just that you point and you shoot. It ahs none or minimal manual settings. No lens changes, etc... Menaing what camera you have is what you have. Where as an SLR camera you can manual set and you change out the lenses....

Thanks LiL...so which do you prefer? Or is it dependent upon the setting in which you are shooting?

SLR - Single Lens Reflex. Meaning when you look through the viewfinder, you are looking through the lens, not a separate view finder that sits above the lens. Generally speaking SLRs give you much more control, things such as interchangeable lenses, better manual controls and larger senors. SLRs will also give you the ability to shoot RAW files v.s. most point and shoots that are JPG only. A RAW file is an unprocessed, non compressed file that gives you more control or ability to 'develop' your images.

You can read more about SLR cameras here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-lens_reflex_camera

Point and Shoot - These cameras are smaller in size and are made more for conveinence and ease of use. Most will give you manual control of your settings, but that is not their target use. Mostly it's for grabbing it, turning it on, maybe selecting what mode you are shooting in by subject matter. Macro settings for flowers and other close up type shots, a setting for Landscapes and one for Portrait shots. Using those settings tells the camera how to set the shutter speed and f/stop, which means how long the image will be exposed to the sensor and how much light will be let in during that exposure time.

You can read more on Point and Shoot cameras here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_and_shoot_camera

No offense here at all JW..... But even with my "manual" settings on my point and shoot; theya re still semi "automatic". It doesn't give ya all that much control. It gives a "lil" bit but not much.....

Also..... Could you please tell me what camera you used for these shots and what camera are you holding in your avatar? THANKS!

Some offer more than others, but for the most part a Point and Shoot is for ease of use, at the very least to be used in what I would also call semi-auto. The biggest issue is focus control, even if you take over all the other settings, AF will be used I would say 99% of the time.

My point and shoot is a Canon Power Shot SD1000, part of the Digital Elph line.

My DSLR is a Canon Rebel XT, I use both new AF lenses and a lot of old school manual focus/aperture lenses, both M42/Screw and Nikon mounts via adapters. That shot I have I have my Pentacon 1.8 50mm

The rest are film cameras

So... you took those photos with the point n shoot cam? You do an excellent job!!! They are simply gorgeous!!!! Thanks for the info!!! I am still debating between cmaeras. I hope I can do more research and make a decision on one soon. LOL!

The reason I purchased my P/S camera was to show everyone that it does not take a 1200.00 camera to take good photos. My P/S was less than 150.00, fits in my pocket and works great.

I am hoping to teach everyone that the camera is a tool, yes better tools make the job easier, but knowledge of how best to use any tool will accomplish much more.

I would suggest holding out till after the summer to buy a new camera, if you are going the DSLR route of course.

Yes I am going that route. I really dont want to wait that long... LOL! I have waited long enough... LOL!!!

I am torn between the Canon 40D and the nikon D300... Can't seem to decide. LOL!

I have lived in the St. Louis area pretty much all my life. Lived in a few other places, like New Orleans, but I always end up coming back home to the mid-west. I am a photographer and an avid bicyclist. I may not always be able to ride due to chronic pain from nerve damage in my lower spine, but it is what I love to do. I have had the pleasure of having my work hang at two group shows in a Chicago gallery. One of my favorite horror/dark artists was part of the show, Chad Michael Ward, having my work hang with his was a true honor for me. Recently I have started showing my work here in St. Louis, so far I have been part of four to date at The Koken Art Factory, Soulard Art Mart (SAM Gallery) and The Art COOP in the central west end. I am also starting to hold local photo classes, giving anyone that wants to learn how to either use their camera better, learn the basics of buying a good camera or find more information on how to improve their own photography skills. The classes will be held at places like The Missouri Botanical Gardens or The St. Louis Zoo. These classes/seminars will be conducted by myself along with some of my fellow photographer friends if needed and they will all be done free of charge. John W
