Phil Graham is right. The results are real. A slow down in the economy a up tick in unemployment. But the reason that he stated is right. We were talked into it.  As the markets were reaching all time highs and unemployment was at records lows those that needed something to make poltical gains with started telling everybody that things were bad.  When the consumer stops spending because they are told the economy is bad the economy gets bad.

There's another hot spot in the economy -- the four-legged family member. Spending on pets and pet products is expected to increase 6 percent this year to $43.4 billion, according to the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association. Compare this to annual retail sales, which are expected to grow 3.5 percent.

NEW YORK (CNN)

If we were really in a recession, Americans would not be spending 43.4 billion on their pets!! Common Sense!! We are being told by Democrats that we are in a recession, causing the economy to be more sluggish.

Ever consider consumers stopped buying because they ran out of money? The credit cards are maxed out trying to survive in this economy and then the 30% interest rate kicks in.

During Regan we went from one income families to two. During Bush years (thanks to child labor laws) families were living on credit. Now this house of cards is collapsing. If another free spending Republican gets elected people will have to resort to methods of third world countries... selling their children.
Hope you enjoy rolling in your money. Just remember the backs who made it for you.

I am part of the Middle Class not the Wealthy Class!! I did just find. The primary cause of economic sluggishness is the energy crisis, which was caused by Liberals! Liberal policy also contributed to the Mortgage problem in our country. Assign the blame to the proper source!

What is the trend over the past few quarters??

We should be looking at trends instead of "snap-shot" figures.

Nailer I do enjoy being retired and the back that made enough for me to do that was my own. fifty or more hours a week and most of it away from home. You are right about the spending we need to cut domestic spending. Name the programs you would like to cut?

Wow, I didn't know the economy declining had such a simple solution. They all told us it was bad when it wasn't for political gain. And, the American people believed it. That is why the economy is bad.

Sounds like an insult to the American people.

Kinda strange that Americans plan on spending 43 billion on their pets next year, but they are also struggling to pay their bills!!

Mutatis it was done for political gain. The reason for the decline is not a solution. We need to stop using national policy for social engineering and go back to policies that were in place before doing so.

A Recession is 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth, which we have not had. We are in a slow down due to energy cost's and the weak dollar. Our Economy has done this over the last century, and it always rebounds even stronger.

The older I get the more pessamistic I get. For some reason I see nothing but gloom this time. In the past I believed turn downs were just a trend. I just don't have the same confidence this time.
Perhaps it's because we've been without leadership so long. The atmosphere of the world is changing. We who once were looked up to in the world are now being bought up and dismantled by the people in other countries who we made rich. More companies being bought up by foreign enterprise, more lay offs, working poor being pushed farther into the abyss. Our nations money being squandered in areas we shouldn't be and no one seems to care. We no longer have the industrial base to support our selves should the world turn on us. Just business as usual ... just a slow down.
I hope you're right. Hope China or the middle east don't start forecloser on us.

The more the news networks claim we are in recession the closer we get to it.

What an irony!

All you right-wing pervs do all day is WHINE WHINE WHINE WHINE WHINE.

Welfare. Social programs. Government handouts. Whine whine whine.

But when YOU do it, it's not whining, right? It's only when middle class people complain about their wages buying less, their homes plummeting in value, our tax dollars being wasted away with a growing deficit, it's only then that WE are the whiners?

Actually, that was a GREAT comment by Graham! He probably upped Obama's percentage about 5 points just with that retarded comment! But then, what else would one expect from the fine reputation Mr. Graham has in his past! Why don't he run, I wonder? Can anyone say "sleaze" and "corruption"?

Nailer has a good point. jsage, so you worked in a vacuum? Well, if you can disk it out, I hope you can take it, because speaking of whiners one thing I am really SIK of is folks sitting on their can "retired" complaining about whiners and those on welfare.

YOU, my friend, are on welfare. YOUR retirement is being paid for by yours truly, and quite frankly I'm SIK of it and think you should get off your butt and work for a living!

Of course, normally I would be all for someone working hard, then getting what they deserve - a retirement. But because you are so hung up about anybody else getting something for nothing, I think that disqualifies you.

I really hope your retirment folds, they kick you off, you lose your insurace - if that's what it takes to make you human again, then so be it. How dare you offend all those on welfare, accusing them all of being phon

Oh, and, jimbob - what about that cold weather outside, eh? Man, it's gotta be only 10 degrees outside right now - brrrrr, it's cold!

(I'm just trying to exist in the same reality void in which you exist. You don't see a recession? You probably don't see the hot weather, either!! In fact, can you even see? Deaf, dumb, AND blind?)

Sik first I have never said anything about the welfare system. You could be paying for my retirement because if a product you buy has been delivered by truck It could have been the company I started. When I retired I did lose my company ins. Thanks for the kind sentiments. Were where you this weekend it wasn't hot around STL.

Sik get a clue and get off your high horse. Recession is defined as 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth. It has yet to happen, but it may happen soon. When all you hear from the media is how bad it is, and that we are in a recession, people stop spending money. Self fulfilling prophecy! Have some intellectual honesty, and assign the blame to the proper source.

Energy Crisis = Environmental Extremist & Liberals in Congress.

Mortgage Crisis/Banking = Liberalization of lending laws and greedy lenders. Who helped liberalize lending regulations??? It sure as heck was not the Conservatives!

I just mentioned 2 primary reasons causing our economy to be anemic!!

Our government spends more cumulatively on illegal immigrants($340 billion annually), than we did on the Iraq war! What is the liberal answer to this problem?

BTW recent polls indicate that Obama is slipping, and they are now tied Nationally. I guess Graham's comments did not matter.

Pull your head out and start thinking for yourself. You cannot rely on Socialist propaganda the rest of your life. At some point in time, you are going to have to face reality!!

jimbobbob - And isn't it interesting now that Bush has taken off the gloves on OCS drilling the act of taking the congressional ban has fallen directly on the doorstep of Reid and Pelosi. Of course their answer is to tap the Strategic Reserve (just enough to get them by until November) without making any kind of a permanent impact for the better.

Inbev is said to cut 1.5 billion from costs. You can be sure that at least half of that coming from the St. Louis area.
Chrysler is closing the Fenton plant this fall putting 2400 out of work, By my calculations this removes another 300 million from the local economy.
Can the St Louis area absorb a billion dollar a year cut in it's economy without Recession ???
I think not.
I guess it's only a recession if it's you being affected

Does AB have a ESOP? The closing of Chrysler isn't good. I don't think there is any question that we are in a recession. What upsets me is that we talked ourself into it. People stopped buying cars because they were told that times were getting bad. The gas price didn't make them stop buying, they could buy the new hybred. It goes with every ind.
