There are states in which the public smoking ban has been in effect for years. My question is has the cancer rate droped where the ban is in effect?

Heck no, the law was all about these non-smokers rights.

Hmmmmm! Making laws to take away ones rights to give new rights to others. ...Hmmmmm!
Somehow I gotta believe that won't end there.

Most people in our area in Il are not even abiding by the law because there is no way to enforce it-it was even in the paper, Most bars are just letting people smoke. They didn't think it through, I guess Blag just wanted to get his big contributions from the insurance companies. They even had signs out on the drive-thru windows that you will not be served if you are smoking in your car. hey I will send you my car payment book then you can tell me what to do in my car. I am a non smoker by the way. People need to find a better cause!!

Govenment passes laws to make fines, and generate income for their states social programs. The states that have a smoking ban could careless about your health. They are more interested in you not abideing. It is also a form of control. Tennessee has just past an epa a law where you get an epa violation when you get a speeding ticket. Thus giving you 2 tickets one for speeding and one for emmission. They contend that the increase in speed forces more carbon monoxcide into the air and destroys the trees. We live in a very liberal society and if we are not carefull we will find ourselves in a communist form of government. With all the social programs and everything else we are very close..

I'm not sure of the death rate attributed to smoking in other states where there is a smoking ban. I do know that the ban does hurt some local business (Bars, night clubs). I think when a smoking ban law is proposed, it is to help protect people from second hand smoke. And that is a good thing.
Most people in public office want to help the community not hurt it.
I say, give it a chance and see how it goes. If it really starts hurting the community, then it should be modified to reflect the community life style.

Yea, everyone here is still smoking. Heck our town cop says SMOKE!!!! There is realy nothing he can do, no laws. I think it made ILL. look stupid to pass this...with no laws.

So, am I to understand that you are purposely breaking the law, and a paid official is telling you to do it??? I am glad I live in a town where the uphold the law.

The paranoia over second hand smoke is ridiculous .... there should be restaurants that have smoking and those that don't .... then owners and customers can choose for themselves ....

Don't think its paranoia, it's fact.
As far a restaurants. We have sat at a table in non-smoking and then a seat over, there is a smoker. Any idea what that smells like when you are trying to eat?. Like sucking on a dirty ashtray. Although, its been said over and over, it kills. how many people with lung cancer, have been told, this is 100% due to smoking. I would venture to say, that most smokers would love to quit.I am sure it would benefit their health, and everyone that is aroudn them. (plus we would not all STINK). And from what I see a carton of cigarettes is at an all time high, of about 30.00? So I assume smoking is a rich mans/womans habit.

Becker, I am a non-smoker and am aware of the harm .... I wasn't talking about smoking areas in restaurants .... please read again and not between the lines .... you are entitled to hate smoking and the stink of it .... but it is paranoia to over-react to a scare, health or otherwise .... granted, first hand smoking is bad, but the second hand smoke thing is way overplayed unless you are one of the very, very few who are health-sensitive to it ......

thnaks for the comment, unklehenry. i guess when i read the facts on it, i am reading something more harmful in the statements. i guess i am not smart enough to judge how dangerous it is anyway, not being a nurse , healthcare worker etc.
