Robin Hoods" steal at the store, give to the poor?
Greek anarchists stormed a supermarket on Thursday and handed out food for free in the latest of a wave of raids provoked by soaring consumer prices.
About 20 unarmed people, mostly wearing black hoods, carried out the midday robbery in the northern city of Thesaaloniki, police said.
Local media have labeled the raiders "Robin Hoods" following previous raids.
They take only packets of pasta, rice and cartons of milk which they drop in the middle of the street for people to collect, a police official said.
"They have never stolen money or hurt anyone. They ask people to remain calm but use ambush tactics, jumping over cash desks," he said.
"When they attack without hoods, people are surprised to see that they are mostly women."
The rising cost of living has replaced unemployment as Greeks' main concern. Inflation is officially running at a 10-year high of 4.9 percent although many items have risen in price more sharply.

Wanted: Ride to Mojave Desert for wayward tortoise
Sun Sep 7, 3:51 AM ET
Sadie the desert tortoise needs a ride to an adoptive home in the Mojave Desert — the sooner the better.
The 10-inch reptile, found at a U.S. 95 rest stop in Idaho, has thrived at the Kiwani Wambli wildlife rehabilitation center north of Spokane since July but is unlikely to do so well with the onset of fall, center operator Dotty Cooper said.
"It's just way too cold," she said.
Cold-blooded desert tortoises are unaccustomed to temperatures below 40, much less when the mercury dips to freezing temperatures. To survive a winter in Cusick, Sadie would have to be kept indoors for months.
She has shared a pen with an orphaned fawn. Sadie even showed the fawn how to forage for greens to eat — a process much harder for humans to demonstrate, Cooper said. The duo once wandered off after the tortoise burrowed under a plastic fence.
"When I got home, she and the deer were marching down the road," Cooper said.
The fawn has been released into the wild, which isn't an option for Sadie at this time because of the possibility that she's acquired a disease that could be passed on to others of her kind.
"Once they've been touched by humans, they're now a domesticated pet. They're no longer classified as a wild animal," said Ginger Wilfong, of the Bay Area Turtle and Tortoise Rescue in Castro Valley, Calif., east of San Francisco, which is helping Sadie find a home.
Coincidentally, Wayne and Lee Ann Cusick happened to read a newspaper story about the tortoise living in Cusick. The couple said they would like to adopt Sadie, but are reluctant to drive from their home in Blythe, a desert city in southern California, to pick up the tortoise in Washington.
Cooper and Cusick are hoping a big-hearted southbound traveler can give Sadie a ride. Cusick said he even considered a tortoise relay and is willing to make the four-hour drive to Los Angeles if someone would bring Sadie that far south.
"I somehow don't think that's going to happen," he said, "but I'm hoping that between word-of-mouth and some notoriety, we'll be able to find someone."
Adopted tortoises are common backyard pets in Blythe, Cusick said. Sadie would even have a playmate at the Cusick household: Speedy, a younger tortoise about half her size.
Desert tortoises mature at 14 and 20 years of age and typically live 60 to 100 years. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service designated the species as threatened in 1990, and several states provide additional protection.

Hey! You have a snake hanging from your car!
2 hours, 19 minutes ago
Think rush hour is bad enough? What if a three-foot python were part of the drive home? The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Friday that biochemical engineer Marika Suominen-Yeh got the surprise of her life last week when a motorist flagged her down after seeing a snake drop from beneath her minivan.
Danny Markadakis, a former snake owner, waited for a lull in traffic, then scooped up the snake and took it home.
Markadakis took the three-foot ball python to Avian & Exotic Animal Care, where it was treated for a mild abdominal burns and adopted this past weekend.
Suominen-Yeh doesn't know where the snake came from, but she said she now checks around her van before getting in.

Seeking ugly women for Outback's lonely hearts
By KRISTEN GELINEAU, Associated Press WriterMon
Life can get a little lonely for bachelors in the Australian Outback mining town of Mount Isa. So the mayor has offered up a solution: recruit ugly women.
Mayor John Molony found himself under attack Monday over comments he made to a local newspaper that read: "May I suggest if there are five blokes to every girl, we should find out where there are beauty-disadvantaged women and ask them to proceed to Mount Isa."
The mayor added that many women who already live in the remote Queensland state town seem quite happy.
"Quite often you will see walking down the street a lass who is not so attractive with a wide smile on her face," he continued. "Whether it is recollection of something previous or anticipation for the next evening, there is a degree of happiness."
The quotes, published Saturday in the Townsville Bulletin, sparked outrage among the town's female population, led to furious online debates and drew criticism from the local chamber of commerce.
"There's a lot of anger circulating among the community at the moment — a lot of passionate anger," Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce manager Patricia O'Callaghan said Monday. "There's a lot of women voicing their opinions."
Molony declined to elaborate on his comments Monday except to say they were "twisted and warped" by the newspaper.
"I've been shredded," he added, before hanging up the phone.
The situation may not be quite as dire as Molony noted. According to the 2006 census, males made up 52.6 percent of the town's population of nearly 20,000.
And several local women said there aren't a lot of gems to be found among Mount Isa's men, either.
"We've got a saying up here that the odds are good, but the goods are odd," 27-year-old Anna Warrick told The Brisbane Times.

Gas pump malfunction sells premium for 38 cents
Gas prices have been falling — but not that much. A problem with a pump cost a San Antonio convenience store when premium gasoline accidentally sold for 38 cents a gallon. Manager Jim Duke at a Dill Food Market says that grade of gas was supposed to be selling for $3.89 a gallon.
Duke says the "pump malfunction" involving a misplaced decimal point was fixed by Wednesday afternoon.
Nobody reported the mistake, which WOAI-AM reported apparently started Tuesday afternoon.
Duke said he noticed a lot of vehicles were being filled with premium and people were paying at the pump. He went out to check Wednesday and noticed the price error.
Duke said the independent gas station lost a lot of money. Just how much is still being tallied.

Groom charged with being too near bride at wedding
A New York state man has been arrested for getting too close to his bride on their wedding day. Police said Timothy Cole quarreled with a wedding guest at a party Friday after wedding his ex-wife in Batavia.
Officers knew the 45-year-old Cole from previous arrests and realized his bride had an order of protection against him. Cole was charged with first-degree criminal contempt, a felony, and ordered jailed without bail.
The Daily News in Batavia says Cole was convicted of criminal contempt on July 1.
The Genesee County public defender's office says Cole hasn't been assigned an attorney.
