WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER SWING AT, A BASEBALL OR A SOFTBALL?

During a rain delay in a Cardinals game last week, a spot aired comparing swinging at a baseball thrown by a major league pitcher and a softball thrown by a female fast pitch softball pitcher.

The girl won every time.

They cited the usual reasons:  pitcher being closer to the batter, different trajectory; however, they made softball seem sort of namby-pamby compared to baseball, with 70 mph pitches compared baseball's 90 +

However . . .

in answer to a question:  What is the fastest pitch measured, and who threw it?

here are the answers:

Eddie Feigner (softball) - Feigner's fastpitch was once timed at 104 mph

also: Joan Joyce. 1958-1966, threw pitches recorded at more than 110 miles per hour, and up to 116 mph, while pitching for the Orange (CA) Lionettes and the Raybestos (CT) Brakettes.

while the best baseball pitch?  :  Nolan Ryan. His fastest pitch ever thrown was clocked at 101.4 miles per hour.

Point is, it would seem baseball people don't want to be one-upped softball, seeing that game as a "girls' game". But if you have ever witnessed a fastpitch game, you see the game quite differently.  Those gals and guys are some of the best athletes, and the game is just as physical as baseball.  I really don't think many people want to bat against many of these fastball pitchers.

Now, that's really playing hardball.

I think the fastest baseball during a competitive MLB game was 107mph. Page and Ryan both had a few hitting the radar at 104mph. How about the fastest 8 year old fastball? Well, the dude is in the metro east and it was clocked at 61mph.

Girls softball is awesome and on Sports Science (ESPN2) it was proven that a AAA baseball slugger couldn't hit 20 pitches. The average speed was 67mph but the trajectory is very misleading. Just an FYI.

They need to use a softball player to swing at the softball.

an avid Missourian 64 years old and married, with children in Colorado, hence the photos from there, and step children here and all have grown up quite well thank you. wish I could go mountain climbing again - just have to settle for the Ozark Mountains instead of the Rockies. Young years spent in North St. Louis County, then teen years in Hyde Park Neighborhood of North St. Louis. Lived in all parts of Missouri, have family in rural Missouri, lived in the Ozarks for about 4 years. Lived in Springfield Mo for another 6, Lived also in Columbia and Kansas City. Returned to St. Louis November 1970 and have live in South St. Louis ever since, have seen many changes, but have seen that the City has remained mainly stable, even grown and attracted young urban professionals with good incomes, an ingredient for a healthy community. Have seen first-hand the circumstances of the disadvantaged of the City. I know somewhat what is going on there.
