McCain has voted consistently against women's health, and he supports overturning the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Roe v. Wade. Following is a summary of his positions on women's issues.

McCain Opposed Equal Pay Bill for Women, Said They ‘Need Education and Training’ Instead. McCain skipped a vote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act that would ensure women have the opportunity to recover back pay for discrimination once they discover it. If he had been there to vote, he said he would have voted against it and that women “need education and training” rather than an equal pay bill. The bill addressed a recent Supreme Court decision that said Steelworker Lilly Ledbetter could not recover back pay for 19 years of discrimination at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. because she had not discovered the unequal pay until she retired. The bill would amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to allow employees to file charges of pay discrimination within 180 days of the last received paycheck affected by the discrimination. McCain Voted to Gut the Family and Medical Leave Act. In 1993, before finally voting for the Family and Medical Leave Act, McCain voted to jeopardize leave for millions of workers by gutting the bill. He voted to suspend the Family and Medical Leave Act unless the federal government certified that compliance would not increase business expenses or provide financial assistance to businesses to cover any related costs. McCain opposed spending $100 million to prevent unintended and teen pregnancies. In 2005, McCain voted NO to allocate $100 million to expand access to preventive health care services that reduce the numbers of unintended and teen pregnancies and reduce the number of abortions.

McCain opposed legislation requiring that abstinence-only programs be medically accurate and scientifically based.
McCain voted NO on legislation that would help reduce the number of teen pregnancies by providing funding for programs to teach comprehensive, medically accurate sexuality education and other programs to prevent unintended teen pregnancies.

McCain opposed Title X, the nation's family planning program.
In 1990, McCain voted NO on legislation to extend the Title X federal family planning program, which provides low-income and uninsured women and families with health care services ranging from breast and cervical cancer screening to birth control.

McCain opposed requiring insurance coverage of prescription birth control.
In 2003, McCain voted NO on legislation to improve the availability of contraceptives for women and to require insurance coverage of prescription birth control.

McCain opposes comprehensive sex education.
In an interview aboard the "Straight Talk Express," McCain struggled to answer questions about comprehensive sex education and HIV prevention. He also stated that he supported "the president's policy" on sex education.

McCain unsure where he stands on government funding for contraception.
"Whether I support government funding for them or not, I don't know," McCain said about contraceptives.

McCain opposed repealing the "global gag rule."
In 2005, McCain voted NO on legislation to overturn the "global gag rule," which bars foreign nongovernmental organizations from receiving U.S. family planning assistance if the organization (using its own, non-U.S. funds) provides abortion services or information or advocates for pro-choice laws and policies in its own country.

McCain supports overturning Roe v. Wade.
In February 2007, the AP quoted McCain stating, "I do not support Roe v. Wade. It should be overturned." In May 2007, he reiterated his desire to overturn Roe v. Wade during an appearance on Meet the Press stating, "My position has been consistently in my voting record, pro-life, and I continue to maintain that position and voting record."

Yes, Roe v. Wade should be overturned, what's your point?

So just when did the words "killing babies" get turned into "womens health?" Just another euphenism by the left to make what is described in other parts of the law as "murder" more socially acceptable.

How did you get from that article I think RvW should be overturned?

And you righties should try to learn it's not right to take away people's basic personal freedoms. Then maybe you might win this year's election. Looks like you're gonna be maaaad...

The Federal Gov't makes a career out of taking away personal freedoms - give me a break.

We should have only been so fortunate that your mother and the mothers of other "lefties" would have served the world a favor in exercising their personal freedom to have slain you in the womb...that would have prevented normal society from putting up with your marxist ideas.

Reading these responses, my thought has already been realized!

I was going to say that NOBODY should vote for McCain, of course. Well, maybe the extremely rich and well-connected - they are the only ones the McCain agenda actually represents.

But when you mentioned that McCain "...supports overturning the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Roe v. Wade" I just KNEW that here they come! Of course, that is why about half of McCain's supporters are GOING to vote FOR him! The single-issue, single train-of-thought folks. Maybe they can only handle one serious thought at a time.

Nevertheless, even if under McCain some of these middle-classers will be out-of-work, lose their home, and lose their pensions and benefits, many will still vote for him because of their simple-minded hangup about abortion.

But let them! Remember, the MAJORITY of Americans still support Roe vs. Wade. So let the little noisy minority be the little noisy minority it is.

dawgma, doncha love the inconsistency among the religious conservatives, though? Against abortion, but also against sex education, family planning, contraceptives, etc. Proves it is a religious, moral issue, and not an objective issue of humanity. And religious morals do not a law make, according to our founding fathers. So I say to them, please, keep your religious beliefs to yourself and off of my body and out of my life. Quite simple, actually.

Note to fbca7: Because most abortions are to lower- to lower-middle-class people, often to many who cannot afford to care for a child, there is a good chance the major

...the majority of these abortions, if left to term, would have become solid lefties!

Anyway, dawgma, just read some more encouraging news about his upcoming election. Polls are showing that just maybe Americans finally figured it out - it seems the economy and the war in Iraq are overall more important to most people than prayer in schools and more abortion restrictions.

Looks like taking away our freedoms and destroying our middle-class way of living isn't helping to elect Republicans!

When will you men ever learn? NEVER, ever tell a woman what she should or shouldn't do, especially when you try to present it from a woman's viewpoint. How silly you look, a man telling a woman what's best for her as if she couldn't figure it out for herself. You'll never gain any ground with us by treating us as if we can't make our own decisions. I am a woman and yes I am aware of most of McCain's stances on these issues but once again you think that these issues should be the very ones that I base my vote on. SikUvTheRite points out that the "religious conservative", single-issue, single thought voters will vote for McCain because he thinks Roe vs Wade should be overturned and yet dawgma08 is advocating women to not vote for McCain for almost this very reason, or should I say the single issue of "women's health?" As if you as men know what we ever changing mysterious women find important. Believe me it will take more that just one issue to win ANY woman's vote, silly, silly boys.

Just a couple of months ago they said Mrs. Clinton was going to win the nomination because she was a woman and all the women were going to unite to put her into office.
What a silly comment and how many newscasters were broadcasting it all over.
It was irritating then having them tell me I needed to vote for her because she was a woman and its irritating now having you tell me I shouldn't vote for Mr. McCain because of issues you think I should find as the most important of the campaign.
Why don't you men discuss why MEN should or shouldn't vote for Mr. McCain or Mr. Obama at least then you might have some knowledge of what your talking about. Let us women go about the quiet job of making up our own minds.

The OP sounds like a political email forward.

As to the subject matter and as a female I had to laugh. FIRST rule of voting for women, don't listen to some man that says 'this is how you should vote'.

LOL

Second rule, do your own research on a candidate. This applies to people of both genders and requires actual work.

Well, memobo, you got to give me credit for immediately taking the "woman" out of the plea and making it why "NOBODY" should vote for McCain! I DO know better than to tell a woman who to vote or not vote for, or importantly, to not let this become an issue of sex or race.

But, the religious conservative faithful WILL be voting for McCain in droves, just for one reason and one reason only.

To most of us, though, it shouldn't matter whether you are a woman, man, or none of the above, or white, black or blue.

There is one candidate who clearly does not have the interests of the majority of us in mind, and I sincerely hope you can reach that conclusion on your own!

Calm down ladies, I wasn't trying to force your little selves into actually making a correct decision. The series of facts i presented was in discussion of women's issues, hence the title of who you should NOT vote for.

It's sad that you little conservative chicks get so sensitive over these issues. That must be why you never even directly replied to the issue at hand.

How can you support a candidate who is so anti-women? If you were REALLY independant like you talk about being, you'd vote for someone who actually cares about y'all.

John McCain left his wife back after he returned from Vietnam. She wasn't the bombshell swimsuit model he had left behind. She got into a bad accident and made her 4 inches shorter, heavily overweight and barely able to walk. So instead of being there for her, he ran around partying and cheating, and eventually left her for Cindy McCain.

Barack Obama has been with one woman and votes FOR women's issues. But you won't make the right decision. You're too busy being stupid. ;^)

Wow dawgma08, too bad you can't write a comment without belittling someone. A "discussion" is a free flowing conversation with respect for one another. Yes, I realize my first blog was tongue in cheek about you boys talking about women's issues but I never called you stupid or questioned your manhood as you seem to be questioning any woman's who doesn't see women as you think they should be.

OK, about the issues, these aren't the most important issues I have when voting for a Pres. So, they aren't going to be the ones I line up behind at the poll. But, just to let you know where I stand as an independent woman.
Lilly Ledbetter Act - Con (If I agree to a certain wage then so be it. If I can prove that I'm only being given less because I'm a women then I have the Civil Rights Act)
Family Med Leave Act - Pro (As McCain was eventually)
$100 Million/Teen Pregnancies - Con
Abstinence Only/Teen Pregancies - Con
Title X - Con
Insurance/Birth Control - Undecided (would depend on insurance's coverage of men's sexual enhancement coverage)
Comprehensive Sex Education - I got it in public school 25 years ago)
Gov't funding for contraceptives - Con
Global Gag Rule - Pro
Roe vs Wade - Con (It will not be overturned, I don't think we would ever get a Supreme Court majority to overturn it, but I am against it. I think it is wrong)
Most of the things I put Con on are a matter of the budget. We have to much money going for too many things and about 1/2 of them should be cut!

Balancing the budget is one of my main concerns for the nation. China is buying us up as quickly as they can and we are letting them. Americans need to suck it up and start doing things in moderation and that means tightening our belt and cutting out the extras from the budget.

I am the anti-shy! I say things exactly how I see them and it is impossible for me to sugar coat things. I have been called an a-hole on a regular basis the past 10 years or so. Keeping things brutally honest is the only route to go, in my opinion. So what's up? ;^)
