Gray Skies Are Gonna Clear Up....!

I'm home sick today, barely able to walk.  Just got back from the doctor who said I have Plantar Fasciitis in the my right heel.  Doc suggests anti-inflammatory drugs and he gave me info on stretching exercises which also says if pain is severe (mine is severe) I may have to stay off my feet for several days.

Any suggestions so I can hopefully be back at work tomorrow.

Many Thanks!

That is a drag Dan...I had that and it hurts. Sorry....no quick fix...altho I agree with the one above. I have heard the goodfeet store really is a good place and can help you out!

Do you feel like you are walking on broken glass when you step?

Dan: I'm a trainer and I specialize in exercise for medical conditions. As your MD probably mentioned, plantar fascitis is a multi-factorial issue. If you've tightness and/or weaknesses in any of the muscles and tendons, and other connective tissues [such as fascia], that act at the heel you're going to be predisposed to this condition.

If you're a habitual user of the elliptical at Riverchase, and you use it frequently, that alone may be the predisposing cause for your PF pain. I've seen a number of people with PF injuries and frequent and long duration use of elliptical machines is a risk factor, believe it or not. The risk is in part due to the placement of the foot on the machine, and the fact that the soleus and calf muscles work non-stop throughhout the movement. And so, if there is any weakness in those tissues, over time that continuous use leads to trauma. So, ease back into cardio gradually.

In addition, if you are on pain meds be very, very careful that you do not over-exert the foot and lower leg just because the pain meds are masking the pain. In other words, you will feel no pain when on the meds, but the injury remains. So don't over do anything! You'll aggravate it and make it worse. Plus, I suggest using an ice compression -- wrap it and elevate it, rest it and ice it for about 15 minutes at a time. Do not use heat! At least not yet. Definately limit your activities and mobility. Rest it. Take a break. Give your body time to heal itself.

The stretching exercises are good for the plantar muscle and to some extent the achilles tendon [both contrib

[both contribute to the pain], but you will benefit more from BOTH stretching and strenghening exercises -- and both, in all the tissues that act on the heel. The good news is, these stretching and strengthening exercises and movements are very easy to learn and very easy to do, and you can do them practically anywhere, wherever you are -- they do not require nor involve use of exercise equipment. They utilize resistance using your own body and, in some cases [for some exercises] gravity. They are also exponentially effective and just as safe.

The not so good news is that these exercises are technique-intensive -- and are very challenging to present, or provide instruction for via email or a blog. And unfortunately, there are no good books nor websites to refer you to. Medical condition management through exercise requires strict attention to detail and thus, execution of proper technique.

But if you're game, when that time comes -- for doing these dual S/S exercises for rehab and prevention of further aggravation of the condition -- once you return to work, I'd be happy to drop by the station to show you what you'd need to do. It'd take 15 minutes, if that, and I'd do it free. Not to put you on the spot! Nor insinuate that's the only option nor a requirement. But hey, just wanted to put the offer on the table. Brian

P.S. when you say it is severe, how severe -- please rate it on a 1 to 10 scale [10 being excruciating]? May I ask if your MD gave you a prescription NSAID med or did he advise you to pick up Ibuprofin or Ascriptin OTC? If it was a script med, I h

Kurkel & madmn829, Thanks for suggesting the Good Feet Store. I'll check it out.

Cheetah, Good advice about stretching. I'm on the second day of the exercises and they are starting to make a difference. I would rate the pain level at about an 8.5. It has been there most of the time. No prescriptions yet. Just anti-inflammatory meds.
Doctor says if stretching doesn't bring relief the next course of treatment may be ultra-sound then cortisone injections. Surgery is rare.

I'm hoping the stretching exercises will do the trick.

Thanks for all the advice. You guys are great.

I have dealt with PF since 2001 and because you do not look sick people do not know how much it hurts. I ignored it for 6 months so early treatment usually help "most" people. When I sought treatment I felt I had the 2 worse podiatrists in the STL area--the said Advil, stop excercising but keep weight down! How do you do that withour working out? Also they said--chronic--nothing we can do since your insurancer company will not pay for high frequency treatement. I was miserable! I walked all day at my job. My foot this past year has been dx as high arch overpronation which is usually low arch pronation so I have bought 4 pairs of orthotics(insurancce says -not necesary UHC). I was desperate in 2002 and spent 300 bucks at the Good Feet Sote for supports that were waaaay too high and put my feet to sleep--no refund. For a couple of years I treated at home and it got worse. Last May I found a podiatrist who had more options of course they all want you to buy their orthotics-one for work shoes3/4 and one for athletics full ones(new balance help by the way). I had a very severe case so I had the Topaz coblation surgery in Oct, Dec and May. I am better but not cured! I still stretch and ice daily. Wear shoe slippers in the house at all times except showering(Ryka mulewhich likks me at first! I take fish oil. I wear sandals infrequently another killer in 100 degree weather. I look loike an idiot sometimes because I am fashionable until my feet. It is hard for a woman to wear orthotics 100% of the time!
Interestuing about the ellerptical. My favorite. I started in 1999. Ihave use
