Gray Skies Are Gonna Clear Up....!

Pollute the environment?

Manipulate human genes?

Cause social or economic injustice?

All are included on a list of "new sins" issued by the Vatican. Sins for the modern age?

Are these sins?

I'm working on a story about this topic. Would love to hear your comments!

Thanks

IMO

This is the catholic church beliefs that they are making a sin. I personally think it is ludacris. I am catholic and I do NOT agree with this at all. Polluting is NOT a sin. It may be unlawful or unhealthy, disrespectful whatever anyone wishes to call it but a sin? C'mon! Stem cell research..... Well you show me in my bible where that is a sin. The vatican has no right in my opinion to try to have this kind of power to add sins. JMO

The only one who can decide what is sin is God. I am wondering if the Bishop is going so far as to believe he has that right.....

So if we break one of "his sins" how many hail marys and our Fathers do we need to say to be forgiven? (sorry just had to throw that one in there)

Hey Dan!
I've been catholic since I was 17 years old and I'm still amazed at how easy it is for the "Church Laws" to change. What did God have a personal chat with the Vatican to make these changes? Hmmmm?
Kurkel I totally agree that the "what is a sin or not" subject it totally in God's hands!

Peace, Jana

Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

by this definition, those certainly are sins.

With or without Vatican edict or definition.

Kurkel..... I like how you put it.....

Wonder why the bishop thinks he is the highest power....

As soon as I heard about this story, I wondered how you would feel about it. It is interesting that you didn't put your personal feeling about it here!

Bible question: doesn't it say in the New Testament that there "are no new sins"? To me, a sin is anything that takes our focus away from God...but we, as Christians who are walking in the light, are "covered" by grace. So if someone says they have created a list of new sins, to a Christian that point would be mute. I don't know Dan....what do YOU think?

I struggle with the concept of the "drug" issue as a "sin." Isn't it generally known that drug addiction is a "disease" and not a "weakness" or "sin?" Conversely, sexually-abusing children can be considered pedophilia, which is considered a "disease" as well as a violation of the Civilian Laws.

I suspect that a good explanation of these "new sins" can be helpful in understanding why the Vatican has chosen to include them in the "Seven Deadly Sins."

Okay, now I am thinking about this...

The Bible really has no precise definition of "sin"; only talks about the remedy for it.

This afternoon was going to be one of those I'm-not-thinking-too-hard-about-anything sort of days and just look at me! That's it...I am going back to sunbathing!!

Well the Bible says to obey the laws of the land..... So with that clause alone polution would be a sin......

Though Adam was told to tend the garden, We were not solely put here to take care of earth, We were put here to proclaim the gospel and take as many people to heaven with us as we can. God is going to destroy this planet when he sees fit, and make all things new. - I'm not saying to go out and burn a tire or throw all your garbage in the local rivers, but I'm not going to make it the 11th commandment either- or even call it sin.

I think the vatican oversteps their boundaries when they make stuff up.

Again....the power and control of the Catholic Church is amazing! Another threat that if you dont do as we say, and $upport our church in the way we demand, you will go to hell.
Add this to the list on why I choose NOT to practice with the Catholic Church anymore, even after being raised with that religion in my household. However I do believe it is a persons own choice to believe the way they want to believe. But its sad that this is coming to a point where the church is putting this on its followers. Remember when you couldent eat meat on Fridays or youd be damned...and now you can.

Being raised Catholic since 1957, don't understand the changinging definitions of "sins". For example...No meat on Fridays, must go to confession once a week. If you go through a divorce can no longer receive sacraments because Catholicism doesn't recongnize divorce so remarriage is a sin? Some "menial" sins land you only in "Purgatory", but others subject you to Hell?...so confusing! For 8 years at grade school attended Mass 5 days a week before class, and also Sundays with family, and if your weekly "obligation" envelope didn't include a donation that was also "sinful".

sorry-typo-meant to spell "venial" (not menial) sins and the "mortal sins" may condemn you to Hell.

These certainly are not new sins, there are no new sins, the church only suggests that when we think of sins today we include these behaviorism in our tiny little thought process. It's not that hard people. Or maybe it is.

Michelle , yes the Bible distinctly defines sins in various places try Collosians 3: 5-10 for a start and then just read the rest of Paul's letters I'm sure there's more, you need to the work yourself.

I also believe there are no new sins. And after interviewing Reverend Edward Richard, a professor of moral theology at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, I got a clearer picture about the comments of a Vatican official who was quoted about "new sins" in a Vatican newspaper. (The Vatican's own newspaper said "new sins" in a headline.)

Father Richard said the church is concerned that social ills such as drug abuse, pollution, creating poverty, pollution, etc can lead to sin. Your right danbetty, be aware of those behaviors that can lead to sin.

Okay, so pollution? Any and all pollution? Then the whole entire world, everyone is committing that sin, Catholic or not. I think it is ridiculous. I am Catholic and I can't see these "new sins" as sins at all....jmo

Connie, I think they are referring to unnecessary and excessive pollution by companies who put profit over environment. A little common sense would go far, and I'm sure has already gone far away.
