Gray Skies Are Gonna Clear Up....!

Catholics grew up receiving ashes on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday. But in recent years more and more Protestant Churches are distributing ashes to their members to prepare for Easter. A Catholic priest last year told me he was getting phone calls from the Pastor at the Methodist Church down the street to get information on celebrating an Ash Wednesday service.

What Protestant churches do you know of that have special services and/or distribute ashes to mark the beginning of Lent.

Also, anyone give up anything or commit to more prayer or acts of kindness, etc. for Lent?

Grew up Catholic but am nondenominational now, so we dont practice Ash wed...But I like the whole idea of it still and the celebration of this time...also like the idea of fasting for lent, tho we dont really practice that either.
Any kind of fasting can draw you closer to God if done for the right reasons.....

Hi Kelly! We mall-walked today for Lent, didn't we? We gave up a morning of lounging around in our jammies to walk 3 miles around the inside of the South County Mall...then you girls DRAGGED me into that American Eagle store and FORCED me to shop a little. HA!

I have been finding out all sorts of interesting things about Lent lately...I'm not going to give anything up, but I am going to do a few things that I wouldn't otherwise do:

1)I will do some extra form of exercise every day that I wouldn't otherwise do.

2)I want to find something every day that I can do for someone else that will make their day better.

3)This is my big one, and I've already ruined it for today. BUT starting tomorrow, I am giving up CHOCOLATE for 39 days. Yep, you all heard me correctly...I AM GIVING UP CHOCOLATE and that for me is a very real sacrifice!! I may be crabby for awhile as my body goes through the withdrawal process...Wow, I am actually nervous about hitting the "Done" tab because once I do, it's a "done deal"!!!

Just realized that I contradicted myself by originally saying I wasn't giving anything up, then saying I am giving up chocolate. It's just that the idea of Lent is to make some sort of sacrifice, like Jesus did for us. Exercising and being nice to people are easier things for me to do, because I like doing those things anyway. After I wrote that, I was thinking "what would be a REAL sacrifice for me?" So that's when I came up with chocolate.

Oh boy.....Dan, what have you got me into here??

I am impressed with you giving up chocolate! Now for me that would be easy...lol. Giving up my coffee would be impossible...ok not impossible but highly unreasonable....lol.

LMAO Kurkel....that would be hilarious. actually, I really don't drink a lot anywho....and he doesn't eat chocolate. LOL

Somehow I don't see his giving up the beer to really work...a bad day at work and he will need a beer and I don't think chocolate will do it for him. LOL

Jaybrd, I love your daughter's enthusiasm on wanting to give up her homework....LOL

Rosie, You are so right. "Hey you got something on your forehead," is something you hear a lot on Ash Wednesday. People stare a lot.

Okay, my observance for Lent is giving up diet soda/soda...something I would have almost daily. And when I crave it, I'm going to use that moment to do something nice for someone I know or a stranger. Prayer and scripture study is a goal too. Whew!!!! One day down 39 to go. God help me!

Good morning Dan!

I'm not Catholic so I never received ashes or had to give anything up for lent.

If I give anything up, it will have to be carrying Joey on my shoulders during our mall walk! That kid is heavy!

Seriously though, I've never thought about making a sacrifice during lent because it wasn't a practice my faith observed. I like the idea of doing something I wouldn't normally do. I'll have to give this some thought!

I'm going to live a healthy lifestyle, going to try to give up sugars, i.e. sweets and pastas and breads and most dairy. Also going give up gripping at my kids, (we will see how long that laughs). When we get out of the hospital, I'm going to start training for a 1/2 marathon.

I just love the comments about something on your forehead. In fact Michelle, when I had only known you for about 18 months I believe you told me the samething. LOL

I think those of the religious conservative bent may try giving up being so greedy and selfish - maybe try for at least Lent to worry less about how much money you have and more about why we treat the disabled and elderly so crappy when it comes time to support them with social benefits.

In other words, for once this year, try to think of others as much as you think of yourselves.

Not usually a trait associated with religous conservatism.
