Gray Skies Are Gonna Clear Up....!

Catholics grew up receiving ashes on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday. But in recent years more and more Protestant Churches are distributing ashes to their members to prepare for Easter. A Catholic priest last year told me he was getting phone calls from the Pastor at the Methodist Church down the street to get information

on celebrating an Ash Wednesday service.

What Protestant churches do you know of that have special services and/or distribute ashes to mark the beginning of Lent.

Also, anyone give up anything or commit to more prayer or acts of kindness, etc. for Lent?

DAN:

I AM CATHOLIC, AND RAISED CATHOLIC, WENT TO CATHOLIC SCHOOL, WAS AN ALTAR BOY ETC.

I WILL NOT EAT MEAT ON FRIDAYS DURING LENT, I REALLY TRY TO BE EXTRA KIND AND HELP THOSE IN NEED. THIS IS ABOUT JESUS CHRIST, AND KINDNESS IS THE WAY TO GO!

HAVE A NICE SEASON OF LENT ALL.

AND AS ALWAYS BLESSINGS:

R.....

I'm a relatively new Catholic -- converted at Easter Vigil, 2006. The season of Lent is a great opportunity for a self-renewal through introspection.

Not growing up with any faith background to speak of (I was agnostic until I converted), I didn't have the habit of prayer. I used 2007 Lent to get better at routinely incorporating prayer into my life. This year, I continue to improve upon my prayer life and I think my goal this Lent will be to utilize the practice of Lectio Divina to grow my faith and hopefully wisdom.

Hey Dan!

As you know, I'm Catholic also, but I think that this is a time for all Faiths to sit back and think about what this time of year means. If your not sure, then learn. If you have questions then ask, but try and find time to reflect on what Lent/Easter means.

When the movie "The Passion of Christ" came out I went to see it and it touched me so much! We all think we know the story, but do we really know the passion and the love behind it all?

Take time and find peace, Jana<3

Beth, Congratulations. You are an inspiration.
Hope your Divine Reading will bring you spiritual growth this Lent.

Jana, Wow! I was just talking with someone about the movie, "The Passion of the Christ."
Powerful depiction on the suffering ,death and resurrection. One of those movies you don't want to see again right away, but maybe Lent is a good time to watch it with others.

Morning Dan! I posted in the News...giving up "double posting" is a good idea, you confuse me! I can barely keep up with the blogs as it is, putting the same one in 2 places throws me for a loop!

I think those of the religious conservative bent may try giving up being so greedy and selfish - maybe try for at least Lent to worry less about how much money you have and more about why we treat the disabled and elderly so crappy when it comes time to support them with social benefits.

In other words, for once this year, try to think of others as much as you think of yourselves.

Not usually a trait associated with religous conservatism.

Hi Dan I just try to live my life as a Christia.

No Denomination here I just want to live for Jesus and know he died for me and I want to be a good person. I feel a person should make sacrifices every day for Jesus all year long.

Good Blog!

I get on my knees everyday and pray.

Sik...I don't know which religious conservatives you've been hanging around to give you that impression, but I try hard not to be greedy or selfish. So do the people I love, some who are right here commenting on this blog.

Asmerelda, that is a GREAT attitude~~to try to make sacrifices every day all year long. It's just good to get reminded of it with the Lent season....

Michelle, I don't hang around religious conservatives (my Mom always taught me to not hang around with the wrong crowd).

My impression comes from the ones I've been forced to work with and, of course, all the writings documenting the selfish agenda of the religious conservatives' disdain for welfare and the common good. For example, many folks would consider Bush a religious conservative - many like him for it.

Need I say more?

Oh Sik, I remember that one of your GOOD friends is a die-hard Republican...right? Listen, people are people. You are going to find the greedy and the selfish in ALL political circles. To say that they are just on one side is ridiculous.

You're so right Michelle! One of the most greedy & selfish people I know thinks Hillary should be president! He'll change his tune when he sees his hard earned income disappear and be re-distributed to the "Poor me" crowd that keeps having babies to up their food stamps & ADC instead of getting a job or education to improve their situation!

Wacky did a very unselfish thing last night....we all met at BreadCo for our blogger coffee night, and I took my kids. They were supposedly studying their spelling words at a different table (I suspect they were goofing around!!) Anyway, when we left, Luke (age 9) forgot his list of spelling words on the table. Wacky was still there and took that list home and typed it out and emailed it to me!! What a super-sweet thing to do, Wacky Girl....I love you honey. Luke will get a good grade on his spelling test today, and it will all be because of you!

Faith (age 11) is sitting here eating breakfast, and she has been contemplating what to "give up" for Lent. We are not Catholic, but we have discussed Lent and what the sacrifice of giving something up represents. Anyway, she just said "Mom, I don't know what I'm going to give up!" She said she wants to give up a TV show called "Drake and Josh" but she said she really likes that show....! I said "that's the point, I think!!"
