Back in the '70s  it seems a teenager didn't have all the entertainment options available today.   A lot of us "cruised", rocking out to music...it all seemed (mostly) quite innocent.  Do they do that any more?  One of the popular places for us at the time was South County White Castle and Steak 'n Shake.  From 16 through early '20s it was a lot of fun, especially if you had a cool car.  I even met my first husband at White Castle in his '70 Charger (and we went through quite a few other muscle cars over the years) , although I was18 at the time driving my mom's '72 Plymouth Duster LOL!

I got a ticket almost every time I cruised South County........ "Excessive Vehicle Noise" was the charge...... St Louis County Cops did not like my Headers connected to Thrush Sidepipes..... Now out here in Jefferson County the cops loved my car.... I would get nothing but compliments from them..... But I was on Lindberg often.....That $10 fine was not gonna stop me......

I loved to Cruise

Oh yeah, we had gotten tickets for that as well as "Excessive Acceleration", but had a great lawyer from Jeffco at the time that also got us out of more serious violations (that could be another blog)...Gary P. Kramer-who is now a judge. (maybe we WEREN'T quite so innocent!)

I loved cruising the strip in South County, yup I was there ALL the time. I use to race on Lindbergh and I beat a guy once and because I had short hair and he only got to see the back of me...lol he came to Steak n Shake to kick my BOOGEDY and than he found out I was a girl, with alot of guy friends so he backed off, it was hilorious.

Now it's against the law to cruise and park which I feel for the kids.

Hey Cricky!

I remember we would head into belleville and cruise down main street! LOL St. Louis was another world away when I was that age! We would hang out at the drive-in and see how many people we could get into the trunk of our cars!! Dang those were the days!

I would have loved to see that charger!!

Peace baby, Jana

Mr_wild and luvthykids, we've possibly passed each other numerous times back then.
Harp-you're right about silly fights boys get into over a girl.
Jana, yeah, the Charger was nice, but shortly after we got married, he had a head-on collision in it (and also knocked out his front top 4 teeth-ouch!)

Like, Omg ! I could totally post on this topic forever !

I was a cruiser in the late 70's and early to mid 80's, We would all park at the shopping center, no probs, all the parents and cops knew where we all were.

We had a solid approx. 5 mile strip..from the shopping center, down broadway, into Foundation park.

We'd park in the shelters and play our music, springsteen, prince, Def Leppard, Benatar, etc... party !

I and my girlfriends could meet strange guys who pulled up and go out to the lake with them to have a couple and talk, THAT'S IT,,,TALK ! No problems at all.

I miss those days **sigh** that's why my user name on about 5 sites is LOSTNTHE80S

Thank you for this post !!

I dont think they could afford to cruise nowadays, with gas over $4.00 an gallon.

I don't know if they still cruise in Flat River now or not. I am not through there on Friday and Saturday nite's anymore. They had a big controversy over it a few year's back. But my kid's cruised it.We use to do Lemay and steak and shake on Lemay Ferry across from cemetary. As far as we went was up Lemay Ferry to steak and shake. From Velvet freeze in Lemay by Lemay show.

I remember when my kid;'s cruised people from St.Louis and Ill came over to cruise. It was crazy. We avoided that area every weekend.

On a smaller scale, when I was 16 and 17, worked at "Young's Dairy Mart" in Valley Park, where their parking lot was a hang-out("Uptown"). We'd then cruise Meremac Station, St. Louis Ave, etc... really all over town. On weekends I-44 Drive-In in VP was another party. A friend's dad was a part owner, so we could get in free if we'd help clean the lot and concession stand the next morning.

There was a discussion Monday on the radio about kids crusing now days....they are all packing pistols!

When we did it through Forest Park we had a gread time....loud music, freshly detailed cars and great clothing.....oh yeah, we thought we were hot....ending up at White Castle....cheese fries, cheese burgers and cheese COKES! :~) yep cheese on everything!

Imapayne, guess any Steak 'n Shake was popular "wherever" in the area. Goes to show the apparent universal appeal.
Ladytbonesteak, didn't hear that story-how scary!...sadly, another example how times have changed. My former husband was so meticulous about his cars, every Friday would give it fresh wax and the interior was even cleaned with Q-Tips in all the nooks and crannies...but "cheese Cokes"???
