STL:

On Thursday I said the Cardinals will be playing meaningful baseball until the middle of September and as usual I was wrong.  The 2008 Cards are officially done as of Sunday August 31st.  Being 6.5 games back of the Brewers with 25 games left to play is not gonna happen.  All in all a good season though, I think everyone would agree that this team overachieved.  Here's hoping the Cards front office makes a big splash this offseason, brings in some Grade A reinforcements, and sets up a perennial playoff contender for the next 5 years or so, because I think this team is pretty close ...

One more thing and I'm really interested to hear Cardinal nations' opinion on this matter.  How will you watch the Cubs this postseason?  I know they're your biggest rivals but I'm wondering if any Cards fans would (maybe secretly) root for the Cubs to finally win the World Series, I mean it has been exactly 100 years, and I think a 100 year curse fits in perfectly with the whole Cubs curse mystique deal.  Basically, what I'm wondering is: Do any Cards fans actually feel sorry for the Cubs and Cubs fans?

I'll be totally honest, I've never been a Cubs fan, but I did go to college in Illinois and all of my best friends live in Chicago and are big Cubs fans, and say what you want, but Wrigley is the 2nd best baseball atmosphere for my money, after Fenway.  So even though I now live and work in St. Louis, and really it's hard to cover a team on a daily basis and not kind of casually root for them (as I do for the Cardinals now), I do hope the Cubs win the World Series this year.  And it's not because I'm a fan of the team, it would just be the best baseball story and the best possible television.  Think about the drama with the Billy Goat and Bartman and all that.  I mean I think the baseball postseason is awesome anyway, but that would put it off the map.

And one more thing, if the Cubs are in the World Series, I'll be in Chicago every day I'm not working.  I love crazy atmospheres, I've been to Mardi Gras twice and was in Dublin, Ireland for St. Patrick's Day one year, and I guarantee you that would be a 24 hour party.

I realize that much of what I just wrote is sacrelige to many of you Cardinal fans, but it's how I feel.  I love baseball and I'm a fan of the game before I'm a fan of any one singular team.

Allright I want to hear from ya'll ... and please go easy on me.

Yes, the Cards are done except for the mathematical equations and PRAYER! When you cannot beat a team that was nearly 8-10 games behind you - that is pathetic.

Now the whiners cannot blame a blown save on Izzy. The bats were dead and we were in Houston of all places, come on, it's what about 325' for a left field homer?

If the Cards cannot make it then I guess I'll have to support the Cubbies, they are from the state just north of me - Chicago.

Let's at least see Pujols hit 35 homeruns, 100+ RBI's and runs scored, and BA of .360 - and be MVP for the NL.

OK so if they are done....CAN WE QUIT TAKING UP MEDIA TIME COVERING THEM? It's over. Move on...perhaps to the losing Rams...ah no...maybe the Blues (hopefully...)...

The Cards flat out suck! Slamming 4 homers in one game let alone the first 4 innings should prove to be a winner. Did LaRussa pull Pineiro too early? He only went 5 innings and had 82 pitches while Johnson had 101 pitches in only 3.2 innings.

It's all about our bullpen and that's where we lose each game (or most of them). If our starter gets in trouble with bases juiced and 1 out - so what! Do you want to put McClellan in to pitch up a homer or the let the guy that loaded the bases empty them?

As for disliking Chicago - I agree totally but the State of Chicago does have some good teams. The Cubs are really hot (even though they scored zilch today) and have both hitters and pitchers - therefore they will win nearly 100 games.

fbca7: As long as the season is still going it's paydirt to talk about the Cards. The Rams won't get any airtime until America's past time is over and that'll be on September 28th for the Cards.

If we cannot make the playoffs then I guess I'll have to support the Cubs - I guess I'll just wait and see who actually makes it because they (Cubs) can still do their normal thing - CHOKE!

You are right, the Cards are done. I will have no trouble rooting for the Cubs to win. They are in our division after all.

The Cubs? Come on now let's not get hardup for a team that's failed since the early 1900's.

What about the Brewers - is anyone going to root for them? I love the Cards too but the Cubs are the arch rival!

On the other hand, the Cubs are playing some very good baseball and to have them beat the Red Sox in a World Series would be good.

Why not go with the Royals - oh yeah - they are history also.

I agree that Pujols should get MVP this year. He sort of got cheated out of it a few years back when Barry Bonds got it.

Can't believe everyone is giveing up on them. You know for sure that 3 games can change everything and people would start talking about how the cards are right back in the mix of things. If we win 3 in a row and the Brewers lose 3 we are 3 back and right there, still with about a month to play. To say we are done is just premature. Go ahead and doubt all you want but everyone on here knows that if we somehow get within a game of the brewers that no one will admit saying we were done. Theres is still plenty of time for us to get hot and the brewers to choke. Just a reminder it seems to me that everyone was saying the cards were done in the 06 season and looked what happened.

i'm not too good on predicting stuff but they had chances aginst the stros. they just too far back and too many other teams right there for the wild thing. they just need to pump up their numbers.

would be a long shot, but how awsome would that be to get back in the postseason race,i wonder what the baseball know=it-alls and so called predicters would say then, lol.and before someone asks me what i would say if they don't make it,i say it's been a damn good year and tony should be manager of the year

i'm very thankful that pittsburgh and cincinnati are terrible or the cards would be in the cellar...houston is going to surpass us and take third in nl central...i agree on spending more money for higher quality players than just praying the pen doesn't blow the lead...

wow just read stooges comments on larussa manager of the year...no way...could be the manager that could've been manager of the year...he didn't utilize his starters the best way possible plus depended on namebrand relievers that delivered nothing but blown leads...oh yeah run support always helps too...manager of the year will go to one of those huge losers last year that are makign playoffs this year...

Yep , love to see the North side against the South side and the curse broken.
North against South for the rivalry and nostalgia of it (think I 70 series) , and it's about time for the Cubbie's to end it since Boston did.
Hate to say it but yeah , I can root for the Cubs just this once.

Nice! Another one huge run scored and a blown save equals one thing - LOSS! After September 28th the "Boys of Summer" will be watching the playoffs in the comfort of their own homes.

I challenge them to try and retain at least 3rd place. I can see Houston passing us and grabbing 3rd slot - terrible!

I'm sorry, but does everyone have amnesia? If the past two seasons have taught us nothing else it is that no lead is safe in September. In 06 the Cards had a sizable lead in the Central & almost blew it with a week to go, then the Met's with the most monumental collapse of all in 07 with one week to go & were beat by the Philles.

I am not saying that this Cardinals team is going to come back, they just aren't playing good baseball, but there is way to much of the season left to say we are done.

They better get the party started because there is approximately twenty games left. This is assuming that the other teams lose while we win which hasn't been happening either.

Nice job on the game last night (WED)! Even though we lost 4-3 it was against the Cubs and only ONE earned run!

Giving up 2 errors in the same inning by the same player is unacceptable! With these events unfolding we are now in 4th place and needing binoculars to even see the Wild Card chase!

Was anyone surprised by Lilly's burst of testosterone at the plate against Molina - pretty aggressive for a little pitcher!
