STL:

I usually keep the hyberbole and outlandish predictions to a minimum.  But, even I was ready to write the obituary for the 2008 Cardinals if they lost last night to the Brewers.  A Cards loss would've meant a 5.5 game deficit in the Wild Card, doable mathematically but not logically.  If the Crew played .500 ball over their last 28 or so games ... the Cards would've had to go 20-8 ... a difficult stretch for even a great baseball team ... and I think most would agree these Redbirds are a good or pretty good team, but definitely not a great team ...

Luckily we don't have to worry about that for a while meaning we'll still have meaningful baseball atleast midway thru September.  I still think the Brewers are gonna win it, but you can never bet against these Cards.  They play Tony LaRussa's "hard nine" every night and I think a lot of critics underestimate their level of talent, too.  I mean you have a Hall-of-Famer in Pujols, a perennial All-Star in Glaus, one of the best catchers in the game in Molina, a late-blooming star in Ludwick, and a cast of hungry role players that play every day like they'll be sent to Memphis if they don't produce.

No matter what happens in October this team has been really fun to watch.  This is my first year covering the Cardinals and it's a season I won't forget.

The Cardinals players will be watching their rivals play it out in the post season. The only regret they may have is not catching the sale at Best Buy on 100 inch projection screens!

Actually, a great turn around last game against the Brew Crew. After a 12-0 stomping, a comeback win might start a rally. I'm just hoping the Cubs show their true colors soon or in the playoffs.

Actually, we would have been in first, or a very close second, to the Cubs if IZZY hadn't of blown so many games. We were in the lead numerous times when Izzy took over and gave the games to the opposing teams. LaRussa admit Izzy is a loser and don't ever let him close to pitching again. Go to bat for the team and see if you can get the bosses to loosen the dadgum pursestrings and get some really decent pitchers for a change. As much as I love the Cards, there's been too many fundamental mistakes in the guys we let go and management is too damn cheap. You get what you pay for.

I've seen bloggers comment that it's time for LaRussa to leave and at some point - they are correct.

With every good season comes a few bad ones and we are in that storm.

Putting Izzy in too early after some back to back blown saves isn't the smartest thing to do. You have to allow him time to replenish his brainwaves and build his confidence.

If you have at least a six run lead then you'll seldom need to worry about blown saves. We have not been getting on the scoreboard as often as expected.

I agree to the above comment about Houston's stadium being odd. That left field is so short that a homer there isn't even to the track in Busch Stadium.

Let's root for a win tonight!

Nice! Another one huge run scored and a blown save equals one thing - LOSS! After September 28th the "Boys of Summer" will be watching the playoffs in the comfort of their own homes.

I challenge them to try and retain at least 3rd place. I can see Houston passing us and grabbing 3rd slot - terrible!

i would say that its safe the cards are done...with tonights series losing loss theres nowhere to go...the cubs have been revived and are now motivated to win more while houston will take the wild card...sit back and frown...
