STL:

Today (Monday) I was reading Sunday's edition of the Post-Dispatch and came across something very funny.  In the "Sound Off" section Joe Barbeau of Chesterfield writes the following in a letter titled "Lighten up, Tony."

"The sports media need to stop interviewing Mr. La Russa after each game.  He is uninformative, uninteresting, unprofessional, and his obnoxious attitude is unwanted.  He is downright insulting to people who are just doing their job.  Would Mr. La Russa like to be treated in the very same manner by his fans, animal lovers, bosses, players, or how about his wife?  I think not."

So funny because it's so true.  After a tough loss that interview room feels like 7th grade detention.  There's more awkward silence than an episode of "The Hills."  I've been at a lot of college football and basketball press conferences after tough losses, where the games mean a whole lot more than a loss does in a 162 game baseball season, and I've never seen a coach/manager take losing worse than La Russa.  I think it's the reason he'll be in Cooperstown some day.  He flat out hates to lose.

Good stuff from Mr. Barbeau.  I wonder if he's a former member of the media.  So what do you all think, Tony's postgame behavior: fair or unfair?

Peace Out,

Charlie Marlow

when you are as competitive as tony and you just suffered a loss, maybe he just feels like answering a stupid question, like, why do you think you lost today?or any other repetitive same old stupid questions he gets asked day after day is just a waste of time, don't blame him a bit

La Russa hates to lose alright . Almost as bad as he hates , anyone that dares question any of his on field decisions .
From the tone in his voice . Too the disgusted look on his face . Tonys ego has no time for a reporters second guessing .

I agree there are a few stupid questions asked now and then, but the majority of them are not. People in the media have jobs to do, they have to fill up their newspapers and television shows every day, and here in St. Louis a huge portion of that must be devoted to the Cardinals. For example we have 4 sportscasts every night where we need different Cardinals stories for every show. Friday thru Sunday we have 25 minute Sports Final shows as well, which need even more content.

Plus, Tony gets millions of dollars a year to coach a game, and there's a lot more important things in life than baseball. Everybody gets judged and critiqued at their jobs whether your a salesperson, teacher, doctor, whatever. I don't think baseball managers should be any different. This is America, intelligent discussion is good.

I agree that when you are managing a Team you should be more polite and eager to communicate with the fans. St.Louis is a very supportive city and we should feel the same support of our teams and coaches (unfair)

I LOVE IT! Here's the problem - when they lose it's usually a lack of managerial aptitude thus he conveys the negative image to the media. Yeah, he's pissed off and he's venting.

Unless there's some factor other than normal play (very very poor play or terrible umps), then take the lumps and just be cordial. It's quite simple, I do it on the blogs EVERY day!

so when your little league team loses, its lack of managerial aptitude?couldn't be the players not performing, right?they also get millions to do their job

LOL - when our Little League teams loses it's either "kid" error or the other team is GNC'd up. BTW - we were 31-10-1 this year select level therefore our coach was pretty damn good.

The loss last night for the Cards was a combination of "blah play" and a near 2 hour rain delay. We are not accustomed to such delays while the Marlins are.

Their shortstop is very good too. There something going on (or not going on) with Pujols. He's had a bad week.

Now, back to the blog content. No matter if you won by 1 or got blown away by 10 - each manager including LaRussa needs to at least "fake it" with the media and just answer the questions - it's simple.

your right as always, when our Little League teams loses it's either "kid" error or the other team is GNC'd up,never the coach's fault, right?funny

i think tony handles the media very well, just because he doesn't kiss their a$$ after every game, doesn't mean anything.maybe the media should treat him like a hall of fame manager that he is,i don't think hr gets the respect he deserves after all the years in st.louis

just my opinion period

charlie - i agree with u totally dude. i get somewhat frustrated or embarrassed by his reactions to questions. if he is in such a bad mood after a tough loss then make some changes. we will probably split with the marlins thus proving that we are not capable of a wild card. can't wait to hear the repsonses either.

I'm seeing too much complainin about Larussa just let the season play it out. if the Cards reach the playoffs then he did a good job if not then they can make the right decishions.

I knew I'd find a blog that's up to date on the Cards again.

I thought it was slipping away tonight but Perez saved McClellan's (sp) butt.

It was a pretty clean game but that shortstop for the Marlins is definitely good. I think he could be either Rookie of the Year or MVP - just don't know too much about him.

Speaking of Larussa and his occasional outbursts - it goes with the game.

At least he has more class than Pinella when he loses or that Mariners skipper - that guy was terrible.

I would not complain at all if the Cards won 10 WS in a row - that's the NYer's complaining - about nothing all the time.

Last nights win was a good example of fundamental baseball. Pujols' bat is dead as of late with little rbis but teamwork paid off. Loop pitched up a pretty good game while the relievers did excellent. Can't wait to hear from the anti-Tony Card fans. This is the way baseball should be played each day and with no homers.

well they took 3 of 4 from the marlins, maybe they are capable of a wildcard, have to keep checking that crystal ball,i guess

go cards

Wow...taking 3 out of 4 from Marlins is excellent. I don't know if it's because the Marlins are a pretty darn good team or the Cards aren't used to playing in front of a crowd of 6,000!

LOL - it's amazing that out of the 4 games combined, the Cards worst home attended game still had more fans. What's this about a new stadium for the Marlins, they'd be better off filling the seats at the Grizzlies park.

Anyway, yes, great wins for the Cards and we need to keep winning each series and those Cubs need to lose a few while we win!

Tony La Russa needs to look in a mirror -- poor man has his hair combed to both sides and it looks like a rug on his head.

Any input on Sundays game? It seemed like the bats were dead until the ninth while their pitcher got away with an extra hit batter after that bench warning for both teams. I believe Lopez was hit in the back two innings late and pitcher remained. Hey we took two out of three not too bad.

Mr. Barbeau is/was not a member of the media. He is not a big fan of the media either, but Mr. LaRussa is out of bounds at his press conferences. The media did cause the Cards to win or lose the game.
