Today is my 35th birthday and to be honest, if it wasn't for my wife (and my mom before I met my wife), I would probably be resigned to eating PB&J or Raman Noodles every day.  I love to watch the Food Network.  Some of my favorite's on there are Paula Deen, Alton Brown, Emeril Lagasse and Guy Fieri.  I decided recently that I wanted to learn to cook, and not just cook, but to cook like a proffessional.  For my birthday, my wife bought me several culinary textbooks, and being the avid reader I am, I hope to read through them and practice and become a much better cook.  Don't get me wrong... I have no intention of quitting my job and becoming a chef, but I guess you could say it would be a dream job for me.  I've tried a few things; a couple pies, chicken in cream of mushroom soup, gumbo and white chili.  Some turned out better than others, but the important thing was, I loved doing it.  Anyone else enjoy cooking?

Your a Food Network junkie like me huh??

Start with good cookware. And you can do just about anything they do on that show.....without the extra help they have behind the schene!

I made that fried chicken recipe on the food network challenge.

I love cooking too! I would love to get paid for it!

I roasted a turkey for Easter and cannot wait to cook Emeril's turkey soup....it involves boiling the bones! It is awesome!

Yes, I am a Food Network Junkie. Misty and the kids probably get tired of it. I could proably do a lot of what they are doing, but am hesitant not having done it before. As nerdy as this sounds, I want to learn about the in depth of why things go together and even about the food science part. My favorite show is Good Eats. It appeals to the chef side of me and the scientist side. Thanks for your advice.

harp...I am pretty much the same way. I'm good at microwaving leftovers and TV dinners. I sometimes used to get fancy and heat soup on the stove. I usually leave the cooking to the experienced cook in the house (Misty). Thanks for the birthday wishes.

The Dierbergs grocery chain holds cooking classes that are a great basic gourmet kick start. They are hands on with classes of less that ten students per, for that personal connection.
