Ok, am I understanding the new variables will be 60 down to 40??? Isnt that what it already is? And if 270 is slowed down to 25, like the guy just said a few minutes ago...that is below 40, and you aint goin any faster, but you could possibly go slower! So, is the speed limit sign going to get slower BEFORE the actual traffic slows down in order to PREVENT the extreme slowdown??? I dont understand!!!

By the way.....the limit is 60 on 270....you are lucky to see anyone going that slow on any given day!!

Yet another dumb move by MoDot. I find it quite funny that they can change the speed limit in 5 minute increments and by 5 mph per increment. What is the true reasoning for this?

As a driver of many miles, I have become accustomed to certain limits in known locations. I guess it's sort of like your city adding a stop sign at that intersection that never had one. You will run it by accident guaranteed!

I would really like to know the motivation behind these changes.

40 - 60 Isn't that the speed limit anyway.

I like to see someone go at least 40 mph on northbound I-270 between Gravois and Dougherty Ferry Road during the morning rush.

I think someone at MoDOT had to meet a quota of decisions and came up with this.

Your tax dollars at work. Unbelievable.

I dont know if this is humanly possible to drive that fast and isnt any speed under the posted limited controlled by traffic anyway?

I agree with speedy.

Geez, this is a dumb idea.

Maybe when 270 is backed up bumper to bumper for miles as it is almost every rush hour AM or PM, the signs could read "0 MPH" because that is the practical speed limit!

Did they reason out, too, that if the purpose is to slow you down when traffic is, ahem, already slowing down, that 1) shouldn't people just notice traffic is slowing, are they saying we are not capable of that?, and 2) maybe paying attention to those damn signs will DISTRACT drivers and CAUSE more accidents when traffic is already at a crawl?

Methinks again, like many things done by MoDOT under Blunt and the current Missouri Congress, that this is driven by money. More money for the contractors building these signs, more money from fines to make up for the shortfalls all taxing entities are facing as they cut taxes for the rich to practically nothing - in other words, I doubt very much our safety is their reasoning here.

No, folks, I think money is the driving force here, as it is with just about anything done in Republican times.

So are they changing the normal speed limit from 55 to 40.....just want to be sure what's going on here.

Is there a such thing as a "true" speed limit? If you are on the interstate and traffic is going 75 or 80 - what are you going to do? We were in Orlando this past week and they do 80 all the time unless it's gridlocked.

Traffic flow is the main decisive factor on what that speed limit is. The speed limit on 270 at that projected time can be 126mph (uh umm) but traffic says it's 22mph.

MoDot is up to another crazy idea just like the 40/64 project and/or initially turning down a free $450 million paid for by Illinois.

I have never known of any speed limit anywhere. I drive what I feel is comfortable and safe. On occasion I am passed on the interstate and on two lane roads. My main question is do the authorities actually care about speed reduction for safety or a common average what people drive thus a catalyst to increase revenues.

the way I am understanding how the new signs will work, is, say you are in gridlock on 270 at hwy 44 south bound then down the road at maybe around hwy 40 the speed will drop to allow traffic to clear up ahead. but the question I have is what happens if you pass a sign and it changes just after you pass. can the cops give you a ticket because the speed has changed but you would not know till you reach the next sign and could that sign have not changed yet or even at all. and the way some people drive on 270 is the speed limit not just a suggestion to them anyway! ! ! ! just my thoughts

To me it is just another way to write tickets.
They will have a cop sitting by one of the changable signs and lower the speed limit then he can go get you and write his ticket. Great way to make a qouta.
This is just like the red light cameras.
A money maker.

I can't tell if it is a money maker or waster!

The cost to replace and then maintain the signs has not been mentioned. Only the cost to replace them. And as someone else said, the computer controlled signs can AND WILL have times where they just will not work! There is a cost involved there as well. What will that be? Where will the monies come from for the maintenance/replacement when one is hit in an accident?

The current cost for the current signs is a norm and has been in the budget for years. We have paid for them already and now we will have to pay for new electronic one’s!

Government waist at it’s best! Come on Elliot start digging.

I rarely drive 270 a 5pm during rush hour...I am usually at work...well, I worked different hrs on Friday....I was going East on 270 or south...whichever....the new traffic signs read '60'...the traffic was going 40!!! and at one point '0'mph....the signs never changed.

I work in registration at St Joseph Hosp in Kirkwood. Our hospital will be moving to Fenton the beginning of 2009. The new St Clare will have the newest in medical tehnology, and will focus on best practices and patient satisfaction and care. You can stop by and see our progress at 141 & Bowles Ave. My life is computer, day and night, for play and work. Gunsmoke, the tv show from 1955 to 1975, is my hobby. I have collected over 200 to 300 episodes of the 635 produced, plus the 5 Gunsmoke movies. 85 year old James Arness has a website where he talks to all us fans on a regular basis. But of course, Fox 2 is the best show on TV these days!!
