The Kansas City Star invited a familiar voice to blog about the upcoming Border War. Brittany Darwell is part of the Watchdog team of MU students that comments in the political area.

Politics are one thing, but mess with a sports rivalry and you really create a storm. Brittany's pro-MO comments have the Kansans out for blood. She has been called stupid, boring, ugly, uninformed, a bad journalist, an awful writer and a a dumb girl . You can read some of her posts and the resulting comments here, here and here. The Star system may require you to register, but that's not all that unusual.

Don't let those Jayhawk bloggers get in the last word.

And happy Thanksgiving to all!

NILES, Mich:  Query to sports fans -- is there art left in sports journalism?

Yesterday, while on vacation, I came upon the childhood home of Ring Lardner.  If his reputation doesn't echo his first name, check this classic piece of his sports writing.  He was born in little Niles, Michigan, but rose to the top of his side of the game as high as The Babe did his.

I'm not a great sports fan, but I am a fan of the well-turned word.  I loved to hear Red Barber swap tales with Bob Edwards even if I didn't know what season it was.

.

So has cable television killed REAL sports writing?  Who out there gives you the joy of sports far greater than the play-by-play?  Or is a dead issue -- if there is no score it is not sports?

I'm an online-media professor at the Missouri School of Journalism. But I'm also a granddad, a letterboxer and an inept woodworker. I spent some time in the MyFox STL office and became hooked on the MyFox blogs. So here I am, sort of the voice of journalism with a big J. I'll take your criticism or answer your questions about the news, the media system or journalism of the future. If you are into the theoretical end of blogging, check my professional blog at http://thecyberbrains.com
