There have been several posts about our "overuse" of cell phones and how they might cause driving problems.  But should we face up to the probability that landline telephones are doomed?

A recent research project found that in 30 countries, per capita use of cell phones exceeds 100% of the population.  There are also twice as many users of text messaging than there are of people who email.

So the shoe is shifting to the other foot.  How do you justify paying the extra fee for a landline telephone now.  And would you miss those wires stringing through the neighborhood?  My son says the only reason to have a landline is to call your cell phone when you can't find it.

I wouldn't own a cell phone if it was free. First off you can barely hear on the thing. When people talk its usually muffled or distorted. I spend most of my conversation saying huh and what on the stupid thing. Give me my landline!

For about 2 years the only reason I had my landline was for my dsl. I now have what was called a "naked" dsl - no phone line needed. I don't miss the extra bill.

I haven't had a landline for about four years now and I don't miss it. No more telemarketing calls during dinner either.

About 4 years ago we got rid of our cable and got satellite TV. We got rid of our “land line” and got “looped” DSL for the internet. We got cell phones for my Wife & I. We are now saving $27.00 a month over the cell phones, land line and cable TV. I know $27.oo/month doesn’t sound like much but it comes to about $324.00 per year in savings. And when you are retired and on a somewhat fixed income it sure comes in handy.

Thank you…….

I have a landline for emergency...
My girls are one of the few teenagers that DONT have a cellphone.
When my lights went out during those winter and summer storms....that was the only thing that worked in my house.

Because of the power outages we have had the past 3-4 years I bought a 7500 watt generator that hooks right into my home power. that way I can always have power within minutes of a power outage. Besides powering the fridge & freezer it will power the computer, and a small air-conditioner. The "land-lines" of the past are just that--in the past. Within 10-12 years the phone companies will be only servicing businesses and emergency operational areas, mark my words.

Thank you.......

When the power went out 2 years ago for about a week, the only phone that worked was the landline, imagine my neighbors borrowing my phone, cos the cell phone towers were down, and they couldn't get out...plus, with no electricity it was hard to keep them charged. So I will keep my landline for awhile longer, also have you ever tried to have a long conversation with a friend that you haven't talked to in awhile on a cellphone, your ears start to burn after twenty minutes...don't have to worry about that on a land line either.

Not true about faxing and receiving via cell. You can do almost anything with a cell phone that you can do with a computer.

Sorry. Forgot he link to the fax technology (http://www.scanr.com/). ((Is there a way to embed links in comments?))
Faxing is disappearing even faster than land lines. Our IT folks don't repair or replace fax machines when they fail -- almost everyone attaches a scanned copy to an email. New all-in-one printer/copier/scanner units are dirt cheap.
And before you ask, yes you can use a cell phone as a computer modem. Some phones have both cell Web and WiFi built in.

You can if you want the fancy phones.... I am a dinosaur and prefer it that way.... When I am off the clock I have my cell as far away as it can get..... I prefer to have faxes and my computer waiting for me at home..... No Laptops, No Cell phone modems, and no communication when I want to be me..... There are a few things I like to do that I refuse to have a cell with me.... a few that come to mind is
Bowling on league night,,,,, Fishing,,,,, Treasure Hunting in the woods,,,, and uhmmm uh er well you know....

I would love to see all , above ground power lines buried . There an eye sour , plus the storm problem .
As for as cell phones , there fine if thats what a person wants . BUT , talking , text messaging , playing games or watching videos . While driving is insane . Its not ( IF ) your going to have an accident . The right question is how ( BAD ) and how many will be killed our injured .

My kids and I only use our cell phones...when we leave or misplace them we are running around crazy looking for them like we had just lost the Hope Diamond...text all the time...internet access too... the land line sits on the table and every call is toll free...we try to embrace technology...if it makes life a tad more simple...why not?

Where I live the cell service is not dependable enough to make cell service your primary service. I personally think it is a mistake to get rid of a secure land line phone if for no other reason to have emergency service. During storms the old hard line system is still the most dependable.

By the way you may notice in my profile I sell cell phone service and if you walked in my office today to purchase a cell phone for your only phone and primary use, I would recommend you reconsider. If you can only afford one phone, in my opinion, for now it should still be a land line phone in my area.

Well we have landlines and cellphones @ my house and i use both somethimes you know. To bad if the DSL was on a differant line that the phone line b/c mine DSL have been going out for the last 3 days and I am getting really annoyed about it.. I don't know why... The only problem is our phones in our house have 5.8 GHz phones where u can pick it up and walk around the room but the problem with that is if the power goes out the our land line phones stop working then we use the cell phones instead...
Thanks

I sell Real Estate, so this guy in Florida bought some property. He waited until he got back home to buy.

So I sent him the contract and he tried to fax it back though his computer.

I was gone at the time, when I opened the door to the office, I could hear, Swish, Swish, Swish, Swish, Swish, so I quickly shut the door and instantly saw, that is was coming from the fax. All the paper flying out of the fax machine was all over the floor. The fax machine was empty of paper and it was continuing to try to fax. I thought it ruined my fax.

The customer was trying to fax through his computer, what a mess.

lol thats funny that he only has a landline for when he cant find his cell.... i myself, would be losts without my cell! i used to have a landline for about 2 months and used it maybe twice! i had it shut off, because i never used it and it was a bill that i was paying that wasnt being used. it was pointless.
