As some of you know my husband and I are moving across state next year.  Now, we've lived in our current house for 9 years, and started w/ nothing.  I've worked really hard landscaping the yard, and I have to say it's pretty cool.

My question is, moving and selling the house, once it's on the market, you have to pretty much leave everything as is.  I want to take some of my bulbs and perenials w/ me, to start a new garden after we move.

How can I go about this?  Should I wait until spring?  Or would it be best to dig up the bulbs now?  How do I store them etc...  I am also going to move some hosta and hopefully part of a butterfly bush.

I appreciate it, because, I love my flowers, and it breaks my heart to leave my gardens behind.  Thanks!

tell the realitor that there are some sentmental flowers that you would be digging up at the move, but will not leave holes in the ground

I'd do it in the Spring. The hostas are safe in the ground over the winter, but I think that if you dig and pot them now, they might freeze. Trying to keep things alive in containers here over the winter here is a problem. At least it has been for me.

I've only lived here three years, so I'll leave additional comments to those people who are more experienced in gardening here (like how and when or even if you can split a butterfly bush and the particulars about bulbs).

I say spring too......... Yes! Just tell the realtors that you taking some of the flowers with you. They will let the newcomers know of that.

Hostas I would think definitely spring....... Not too sure of the butterfly bush....... I don't think you can split it... Considering that we have already had frost and so much cold I personally don't think it is a good idea to dig up bulbs right now.....

My husband and I have been married for 14 years, and have 3 boys. I work part time as a receptionist for a Chiropractor, and I have to say, I LOVE MY JOB! On my days off, I love hanging out at the river, and my new hobby fishing. I also sew on the side, odd jobs and such. I'm hoping to get back into crafting now that the kids are back in school.
