From Anti-depressants.

Recently I ran out of my meds again. And I've been doing so great, I thought well, maybe this time I don't need them.. After 8 days I crashed hard. I had a great week, then by Sunday out of the blue I was irritable, angry, bummed out, so so tired. I went to bed and couldn't sleep.

In the middle of the night, I thought to myself. Maybe these are withdrawal symptoms.

Sure enough. They were.

I started taking Celexa 6 years ago. Have been on and off since. Every time I try to quit I end up in the hospital depressed as hell, suicidal. And of course, I'd just get back on the meds because obviously I needed them right?

Wrong! Turns out that the withdrawal symptoms from SSRIs are depression, suicidal thoughts, impulsive behavior. And the symptoms are worse than before you took the meds.

It is suggested you wean yourself off the drugs, because of the symptoms. Now my question is, why the hell didn't the doctors tell me any of this? They were more than happy to write a script and get me back on the drugs. No one told me that my depression might be  withdrawal.

That's really scary if you think about it.

Right now I'm looking at 8 months to a year of weaning off, and will still have the symptoms 1-4 months after I'm off. CRAZY!

Please read the fine print and ask lots of questions before you go on them. I was too depressed to care and took them willingly, now I'm suffering the consequences.

I guess I have been lucky.I have always been able to pull my self out of a depression.Oh with the help of my hubby. When I would get to bad with the yelling and cranky the kids stayed out of my way.But I seen what my mom went through on valium after years on them and I swore if anyway possible I would not do anti depreesant. So far so good.Never did.

I'm just curious. If you are doing well on the meds why do you want to get off of them?

andyandeye . . . I see this all the time. Many of the drugs are increasing seratonin levels in your brain, as such, when you stop taking them, wham-o, your crash and burn. I tell center participants to only go off a med under the care of their medical professional. Unfortunately, it happens all too often, then they can end up back in the hospital.

Good luck with this weaning off the meds, talk to your doc often, and if you need help, get it.

Cuteypops...

Why should I be taking meds and messing my system up for the rest of my life, if I don't have to?

The side effects for celexa include kidney failure, and all that fun stuff. If I can avoid that... Then it's worth it right?

andyandeye . . . there are many people out there that no longer need the medication, so I can understand where you are coming from, just be smart and work with the doc.

Unfortunately, some are not so fortunate and no medication will help, others it only helps mildly. If you've had 6 decent years . . . you're one of the lucky ones.

Andyandeye,

Please, please talk to your doctor about this before deciding to discontinue taking ANY of your medications. I looked at the website you provided and I did not see ANY medical research done by a REPUTABLE school or university. I have to make this public warning, DO NOT ACCEPT ANY INFORMATION from a website unless it is from a REPUTABLE school or university! I, myself take Remeron, Celexa and Welbutrim and am in relatively good physical condition for being 50! It seems like there is good clinical reasoning for you to be on those medications, please don't hurt yourself further by not taking them!

Andyandeye....first of all how long were you on your antidepressant? If you are them for a long period of time then it will take a while to wean yourself off of them. You just can't stop cold turkey. It is the same as being addicted to meth...you have to do a wean of that too. You basically are getting the drug out of your system little by little. I hope that you can successfully wean yourself off.

Cuteypops....a lot of people go on antidepressants for obvious reasons and once they start feeling better they want to be off of the med. A lot of people don't want to take a pill for the rest of their lives. That is what I gather from doing my medical transcription.....

My husband and I have been married for 14 years, and have 3 boys. I work part time as a receptionist for a Chiropractor, and I have to say, I LOVE MY JOB! On my days off, I love hanging out at the river, and my new hobby fishing. I also sew on the side, odd jobs and such. I'm hoping to get back into crafting now that the kids are back in school.
