Over the past several days, the presumed GOP Presidential nominee, John McCain, has been making a major foreign policy gaffe. He apparently STILL does not know the difference between Sunni and Shi'ite.

McCain said it was "common knowledge and has been reported in the media that al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that's well known. And it's unfortunate."

Huh? Psssst....McCain? Al-Qaeda has not been going into Iran, a primarily Shi'ite country. Al-Qaeda is predominantly Sunni. Many Shi'ites blame the Sunnis for massacring the Shi'ite. The schism between the Sunni and Shi'ite began in 632 AD. John McCain was maybe even around then to see it happen. Regardless, this should be basic knowledge for anyone who aspires to be the leader of the free world.

Are you really making the claim that McCain didn't say this? Do you consider townhall.com and Hugh Hewitt part of the "liberal media"?

As you know, there are al Qaeda operatives that are taken back into Iran, given training as leaders, and they’re moving back into Iraq.

This transcript is from Hugh Hewitt's blog on townhall.com. Where is your proof for what you post?

I am more worried about a racist liar taking charge of this country, then I am of a candidate that may have spoken in error. On a bad day, McCain understands the threat of terrorism better than any of the Democratic candidates.

This wasn't a slip of the tongue. McCain doesn't appear understand the basic differences between Sunni and Shia. We have been told over and over again by the Bush administration that Al-Qaeda is a "threat to our very civilization". Shouldn't the next president understand what's going on in the middle east? Look where incompetence has gotten us thus far.

It's great to see that you can regurgitate the right wing talking points that have zero substance, though.

On a bad day, McCain understands the threat of terrorism better than any of the Democratic candidates.

Well, he hasn't really shown that, has he?

If you really want to get into the facts, I am more than happy to do so. Here is your first clue, McCain supported the surge, the Dem's took a pass. Guess who was right! You want $6 a gallon gas prices, try a precipitous withdrawal out of Iraq. McCain gets it, neither of the Democratic candidates get it. I am going to let you in in on a dirty little secret, neither Obama or Hillary will excercise an immediate withdrawal out of Iraq. This is election year politics, or in other words they are throwing red-meat at their base. They might pull some troops out, but in reality the majority will stay to keep the country from self destructing. There are serious conseqences to a precipitous withdrawal. I doubt that either Hillary or Obama are that stupid, just election year promises to get elected.

Now I am not a big fan of McCain, but he is clearly the lesser of 2 evils. McCain has been solid on National Security issues. Going back to 2003, the majority of Democrats supported this war, based on the same information the President was looking at. When the chips were down the Democrats wanted to cut and run. McCain stood strong and pushed for a surge. The man is a true American hero. When I listen to Obama/Clinton they do not have a clue when it comes to foreign policy. They think you can appease your way with terrorist states. They are clueless and are not living in the real world. I stand by my statements.

I am just getting warmed up, because I am sick of all this liberal fantasy land garbage, being preached by our wonderful media. The Democrats/media are pushing for a loss, and they benefit politically only if we lose. I find this pretty disgusting. Go ahead and throw me your liberal propoganda, I will be more than happy to go back into the fact-files.

Oil was $30/barrel before we invaded Iraq. Now it's at about $108.

Regarding your characterization of how the presidential nominees would withdraw troops from Iraq - I think it's abundantly clear that either Democratic candidate will do so in a way that is better for our troops and our country than will McCain. McCain believes we should be there for "100 years" if necessary. It's ugly no matter what. Your little rant is akin to someone smashing an egg on the sidewalk and then criticizing the way other try to clean up the mess and put it back together.

I am just getting warmed up, because I am sick of all this liberal fantasy land garbage

Unfortunately for our country we have been living the "Republican reality" for the last 8 years. It's impossible to make a credible argument that country is better off or that we are "safer" than we were before Bush took over.

hoghd23 - do you have anything of substance to add? I mean, you're welcome to be the echo chamber/peanut gallery (ditto head mentality), but I'm just wondering if you can actually do some critical thinking and add to the conversation.

"The Democrats/media are pushing for a loss, and they benefit politically only if we lose. "

That statement is what is disgusting and shows you are just parroting people like Rush Limbaugh and the other haters on the right.

Hey...I've heard all your BOOGEDY before from other liberals. Yours is nothing new and there is no future in discussing anything with you. You are hard headed and willing to settle for anyone as long as they are not Republican! If you think there is anything "good" in clinton or obama, you are just plain ignorant!

If either one should win the Whitehouse you will get what you deserve...

The American people, the US government, and the Republican party have a vested political interest in winning the war on terror. The Democratic party has a vested political interest in losing the war in Iraq. Iraq is the main battleground in the war on terror. It is shameful and borders on treason that a major political party with help from the press would carry propaganda for the enemy. The Democratic party is doing just that. No patriotic American should vote Democratic for the next 20 years and get the subversive liberal leaders out of Wasington.

Get a clue! You are unable to win on the facts, so you try personal attacks. Guess what since 911, we have not been attacked on US soil or US interest. Bill Clinton is unable to say that. Guess what, wire-taps prevented another attack on US soil that would have been larger than 911. This received global press, but was ignored by our domestic media. Why..because our liberal press is opposed to wire-taps.

Pay closer attention to what McCain actually said about Iraq. He said we could have a presence for 100 years, just like South Korea and Kuwait, and other countries as well. We have had a presence in Kuwait, since the Gulf War. McCain is not saying we will be involved in combat for 100 years. Pay closer attention.

I really do not think that you are aware of the facts, I believe that you are repeating liberal propaganda from our wonderful press. There was an independent study done that contrasted the Bush economy through 2007 and the Clinton economy in the 90's. Guess what, economic statistics showed that Bush did slightly better. Unemployment was lower, economic growth was higher etc. This was before our current economic slowdown, keep in mind that we faced a recession under Clinton, at the end of his second term. Guess what, Bush lowered taxes proportionally more for middle and lower income groups.
Over 14 million of the poorest were removed from tax liability, they would have paid taxes under the Clinton plan. Even with 2 wars our deficit declined to approx 138 billion or 1.3% of GDP through 2007. The deficit % of GDP was the lowest in nearly 40

The American people, the US government, and the Republican party have a vested political interest in winning the war on terror.

All Americans - Republicans, Democrats, Independents, ALL - have a vested interest in "winning the war on terror." You have made the mistake of conflating Iraq with Al-Qaeda. Let's start from the beginning: Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Al-Qaeda was NOT in Iraq before we got there - even Bush admits that. Only the most woefully ignorant or willing obtuse person still believes that. The war in Iraq has been a hindrance to fighting the "war on terror."

Jingoistic hyperbole aside, ken, can you address the topic of this blog?

years. The statistics I am quoting you are not Republican talking points, they are a matter of record. If you were to take the time to review independent sources, you would come to the same conclusion. Our media is at its worst, when there is an election pending. There goal is to influence public opinion against Conservative candidates. The media spins the truth, thinking we are too stupid to figure out the truth.

My media sources consist of both liberal and convervative. I can think for myself. I research the facts, and this makes me very angry, because the public does not receive the truth.

You skiped a sentence which read: The Democratic party has a vested political interest in losing the war in Iraq. THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WANTS THE USA TO LOSE A WAR.---THE DEMOCRATICS ARE WORKING TO LOSE THE WAR IN IRAQ. Is that blunt enough? obtuse? I guess I am. Where was the only terrorist training camp with a passenger jet training aid? Can you say Iraq? I don't think Alquada are going into Iraq like they were. The roaches check in but they don't check out---American and Iraq soldiers kill them by the hundreds. Alah will run out of virgins before we run out of bullets.
