Did you know that in the city of St. Louis, and in many suburbs in St. Louis you can get a ticket for not keeping your sidewalks cleared and free of ice.  I was walking down Dickson this evening and about 1/4 of a mile of it was not salted at all.  And also if someone slips and falls on the sidewalk that runs by your house, they can sue you!  So when it comes to salting your sidewalk that runs from your porch to your driveway, if you have a public sidewalk that runs along the public street, show some respect by shoveling it and salting it so that they don't slip and fall.

When the weather changes, so does the type of birds around our yards.  When they migrate, most of them can hit a speed of 20 miles an hour.  To a car, that's pretty slow.  But for an ordinary size bird, that's pretty fast.  Sometimes putting out meat or fat for them is good due to that in the fall when temperatures are cooler, they rely on the fat to help keep the body warm during flight.  Unlike humans, birds don't have to slow down for ice on the roads like we do.  The claws they have for great traction are called TALLONS.  They use those to grab onto tree branches.  Since birds don't have windshield wipers, they fly down into a pond to clean their entire head and then take off again.  I've learned about the speed of most birds at the zoo.

It is time to think about the environment and cleaning the air.  We need to protect our rain forests.  Carpooling, and cycling are two great alternatives to Metro.  When it comes to tossing out the trash, recycling is good.  Some communites have curb side recycling where the company pulls up in a truck and takes the stuff to the recycling dump and the workers there seperate the stuff.  In the winter time, fireplace ash is aiso recyclable due to that you can dump it in the flower bed or scatter it on your lawn.  The ash is great food for your lawn and plants.  Trees also feed off of it as well.  Yard waste now gets hauled off to a mulching mill rather than winding up in a landfill.

If you have any outdoor plans, limit them.  Hit the pool.  Get into the AC.  Pray for those who have no AC at all.  Pollen levels tend to be at severe levels as well.  So you want to have a decongestant near by  for incase of trouble.

There is a faultline that at times errupts like a volcano.  And when it does, the earth shifts.  I felt one at aroud 4:40 this morning and later on an aftershock at around 10:00 or 10:30.  The St. Louis Science Center has an exhibit about earthquakes.

Remember the summer or 2007, now lets hope that we never see that again.  In the state of Colorado, there are some areas where they see crystal clear air just about all year round.  Up in the mountains is one of them.  But if we want our summers to have the crystal clear air year round, then it's time for us to get busy.  There are thousands of things we can do to help protect the enviorment.  Some have switched to MetroLink, some drive hybird cars which run about part of the time on electric, while other newer cars have other moves in the engine to be more enviromentally friendly.  There is carpooling.  To register or to get info, dial 1-800-VIP-RIDE or log onto http://www.ridefinders.org

There is recycling.  If you have a fireplace, shovel the ashes out and scatter them throughout your lawn and garden.  That way, the ashes beocmes food for the plants and grass.  Newspaper can be recycled two ways.  One way is via the fireplace and the other is to take it to a recycler.  If you can't take it a recycler near you, have your city come up with a curb side recycling service.  Yard waste is now recycled.  By law, regular trash haulers are now prohibited from picking up yard waste on the same run as the regular trash runs.  Yard waste gets haulded to a mulching mill or gets transfered to another hauler that will drive it to a mulching mill.  If your local city doesn't have a recyling program in place, tell them to stop playing stupid with money and start a recycling program.  What is your plan for the envoirnment?  What plans do you have in store to help clean up the air?  Please post.  If you haven't gotten a plan, work on one.

With the winter weather, we face one thing that I can see why some people hate winter weather.  It's called "Black Ice".  And it forms at night.  I sometimes call it "Surprise Ice" because your eyes might tell you that it's just a puddle of water until once you step on it or drive on it, SURPRISE!!!  It's got you!  That is one thing you really have to watch for in this type of weather.  In summer, we complain about the high heat and dangerous pollution levels during the daytime, but during the winter, we complain about the cold.

Did you know that the ashes in your fireplace can be good for your lawn?  A little bit of fireplace ashes being scattered on your lawn or around your trees can help keep the roots in good shape.  The ashes can be great food for your lawn and trees.  Also they are good for your garden.  Good food for your trees in your yard can help create great shade for summer.

Remember this summer of 2007 with the heat and air quality hitting dangerous levels?  Eventhough we can't control the temperature climbing up into the 100s in the summer, but we can work on how we can keep the air quality from hitting dangerous levels quite often.  Dirty air is bad for your health.  It's like smoking.  Now while it's winter and the air is nice and clean, now is the time to prepare for the summer of 2008 so that we don't see a repeat of 2007 air quality wise.  According to my history of watching TV, when I was a kid, I remember one of the puppets named "Oscar the grouch".  He was a big fan of trash and dirty air.  Even though that I don't watch "Sesame Street" anymore but I remember those puppets from that show since I was a kid. Nowdays, I watch Fox2 News and CNN Headline News.

Did you know that the pavement in the summer can be 40 degrees hotter than the air temperature?  That's why when we walk on the massive trail system in Forest Park, there are two types of paths.  There are paved trails and the unpaved trails.  If the air temperaute is 100 degrees like we have been seeing many times in August, the street temperature can be at 140 degrees.  That is why we at times want to dart inside to the A/C or to a pool when it gets into the upper 90s or low 100s.  This is also the reason why many Waterway car washes don't want to hire senior citizens to work there.  It's because of the heat.

Now with summer being here, we need to think about the way we get around and how to protect the earth.  Recycling is great due to that it takes up less space in the landfill.  There are many recycle centers in the St. Louis area.  Some suburbs have curbside pick up for recycling.  That is where you put your recycle stuff in a container and put it out at the street and a truck comes along and picks it up and takes it to the recycle place.  There is carpooling and public transit.  The number for carpooling is 1-800-VIP-RIDE.  It's toll-free.  And they have a website.  That's is;

http://www.ridefinders.org.

MetroLink runs on overhead electric wires.  MetroBus runs on diesel and the engines are running cleaner due to stronger filters in the exhaust systems.  However, the mechanics can brush up on some maintenance on the buses and vans some.  I did see at one time a post by another member here about Metro bringing troublemakers out to the county.  Well, I have seen the way they behave on the buses at times.  Metro has a security number for if you feel threatened onboard MetroLink and MetroBus.  If you feel threatened or experience a serious situation on Metro property, dial 289-6872.  The stations do have emergency call boxes that automatically link you up to the security office at the main shop.  There are miles and miles of bike trails in the St. Louis area.  The Grants Trail has been extened just recently and also the River Des Peres trail also has gotten a huge extension as well.  It even has a connector trail that goes to the Christy trail in South St. Louis.  For a map of the bike trails, log onto;

Time to get ready to do our bit to help clean up the air this summer.  One thing about winter, it's clean.  Now it's time to do what ever we can to help keep the air winter clean.  There is carpooling, Metro and the bicycle.  Before we let our summer get bad and have dirty air, lets get our heads together and get serious.  When highway 40 goes out of service, if we don't get busy and change, our air quality is going to go thru the roof.  Dirty air is bad for our lungs.  It's almost like smoking.  Don't wait until it's too late.  We don't want St. Louis to have the filthy air like Los Angles and New York does.  We want it to be clean like up in the Rocky Mountians of Colorado.

Clean air is one of the healthiest sources of weather. But the only time we get it is in the winter and into early spring. Later on, it gets polluted. Dirty air is just about as bad as cigarettes. St. Louis doen't need to have air very dirty in the summer. Birds need the air to be clean so that they can see where they are flying. Birds don't have windshield wipers. Cars and trucks do. Now lots of us remember the old TV show "Sesame Street" on PBS. Oscar who lives in the trash can loves dirty air. As much as to what I know about the history of the character. In Colorado, the air is clean just about through out the year. That's because of the many trees of many types and also they have mountians and tunnels. Only source of pollution that is seen is the smoke being belched out of the stacks of the trucks and the locomotives and that's all. The doctor states that clean air is good for our health anyway. I don't think that there is any live animal that likes dirty air. Los Angles, California has dirty air pretty much of the time. Tell us what you think.

When a tree branch falls on a powerline leading to your house you hear a tone. That tone is an accustic bass plucking a "B" note with a little bit of distortion.

Here it is in January, but we want to keep the air nice and clean in the summer. Similar to the air in Colorado. There is carpooling, vanpooling, Metro, recycling, etc. Post your ideas here.

I love Fox2 News because of the "You Paid for it" helping us to know who to vote for and who ought to be voted out of office. Transit oriented Development is like a big vacuum cleaner attachment to clean up the city. I feel that Call-a-Ride is Metro's second best mode of transportation along with the famous MetroLink. To ride Call-a-Ride, dial 534-1544 Monday thru Sunday from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. For maps and schedules on the many Metro Bus routes, MetroLink, and Call-a-Ride paratransit service log onto; http://www.metrostlouis.o
