Has anybody been picking any blackberries yet?  I've got 2 gallons in my freezer, picked another gallon last night, and have more to pick today.  They're really good this year. Normally it seems we can't get any rain and they either burn up or are really seedy.  These this year are for the most part, plump and juicy! I'll have to make a cobbler soon. YUMMY!

mmmmmmmmmmmm ... I grew up with dewberries in the back yard! Mom and grandma would make such wonderful cobblers! And dewberry ice cream is great, too! My cousin used to call it "caterpillar bone" ice cream because of the seeds.

Or just mix some sugar with the berries and serve the syrupy goodness over French vanilla ice cream ...

Now I'm hungry ...

Oh yeah Jill. I love dewberries too! I'm headed out soon to pick again. We have tons on our little piece of heaven. The bad part is my hubby doesn't eat berries of any kind and the kids are all grown. This yummy desert stuff does wonders for my waistline! HA!

We have the thornless ones planted and the bearies this year are huge. They won;t be ripe for another week or two. We are in a valley and had a very late freeze. We thought for sure we wouldn't have berries at all. Our wild ones are getting ripe..we picked a pint last night...You take your life in your hands picking them..if the thorns don't get you the mosquitoes do (they are down by a puddle creek.)

Close...very close! Then I will pick them every day and use them in my protein shake for breakfast! It's hard to save enough for a pie!

I've never had persimmon pie. We used to have a lot of persimmon trees on the farm when I was a kid, but I have seen any in years.
I was going to go pick blackberries down in the river bottom, but MAN, they're covered in poison ivy! It's not worth it to me. I'll stick to the ones up here in the woods and along the road.

I LOVE blackberries!!!! My grandparents grow them, but with the late freezes earlier this year, we lost all of them, which just sucks! At least we still have some in the freezer from last year!

Wild blackberries are just now ripening, hard to get to them before the birds...

Looking forward to the first cobbler..mmmm...

we used to go up in the blackberries to pick, barefooted and shorts, and then we would eat a big bowl with sugar and milk on them... mom would make jelly with the rest.... there is a lady that sells them at the farmers market, and her's are as big as a golf ball, really.

Sounds yummy......just berries, a little sugar and half and half! Anyone know a U Pick or a good place to buy in Illinois ? My MIL gets the wild ones and makes the best cobbler.Shhe wants me to learn the recipe but my "jeans" do not want to know the recipe and keep it as a "special occasain" treat.

I lost my raspberries to birds, but I never have trouble with the blackberries. We had the late freeze too, but it didn't affect either of the berries.

Glad you guys said the blackberries are ripe! Gonna go over to Brussels to this little farm that has peaches AND blackberries and git sum tomorrow! The lady's got tons of vines in her front yard so we don't have to get chiggers and such when we pick 'em. I can taste them now!

I am seriously thinking about planting them for future years. The vermine who visit my yard just took all my green tomatoes! I am really angry! Maybe berries covered in bird netting will do better. We used to have grape vines along our walkways. My great aunt and I made homemade jelly every year. Too much shade there now and the vines are gone. Sad.

Borrow a set of hip waders to pic the blackberries...our wild patch is so thorny you take your life in your hands picking them. second reason for the waders...copperheads love to hide in the cool under the leaves. yes you pick in the evening after the sun is behind the hill or you will roast in those waders. We have also planted the thornless ones. They have berries big as the first joint on my thumb (the wild ones are good on size this year too. we had rain at the right time to plump them up.)Critters in the maters..we have a critter cage, everyday we are carting critters to another part of town. gas prices what they are, it is a costly problem, but it would cost me my maters not to do it (They adore Italian flat leaf parsly, too) Last night we caught a two for one special, "raccoons". how two got caught together is amazing.

i havent been out to see any -- but there used to be blackberry vines along the railroad tracks in Washington, MO. go down to the riverfront there, but before you get to the tracks turn left -- go a ways -- about a half mile -- should be some right along the tracks

I am a retired letter carrier with the Postal Service. I live in the country with my husband, who is my best friend. We met doing country dancing and did a lot of it. I have three children...1 daughter and 2 sons. We are now the proud grandparents of a beautiful baby girl! I am a country girl thru and thru, and love nothing better than living out here in the middle of our woods! I love Fox 2 in the morning and feel lacking if I don't get to see it. You guys crack me up!! Love you all!
