I find it amazing when I give the cashier a $20, $50, or sometimes (on rare occasion) a $100 – they always use their little markers to see if it’s a “good bill”.  What if it isn’t and I had no idea?  What should I do?  What would you do?

We are always getting these bills back as change.  If I go to the ATM to get $100 out it gives me 5 twenty dollar bills.  Should I use my special marker at the ATM to verify the authenticity of the paper?

I believe we as consumers need to make sure that these stores aren’t passing on a counterfeit bill to us.  So, next time you get a $20 (or even a $10) bill as change, WHIP out your special marker to declare it as real money.  Who knows, maybe it’s the retailer passing on the bad buck.

Since any acts of STUPIDITY (rudeness) are not legally a misdemeanor yet - I will DELETE any rude remarks from experienced jerks/trolls. I do HAVE the right to discriminate!

Wel the fact they all do it makes the chance of you getting one back in change slimmer..... If you do get one then you are out of luck.. There are no refunds...... Banks will keep it and turn it over to the FBI...... You will be accquitted at best......lol

speedy - loss prevention people will tell you that marking the bills with the special marker is more of a deterrent to scare those who might try to pass a counterfeit bill than anything else.

From a friend that was at a major police department in the area who handled that stuff, the majority of bills that they held for the Secret Service were very clumsy forgeries that resulted from scanning a bill and then printing it on an inkjet printer. Many of the passed bills were only printed on one side, the paper wasn't right etc. etc.

The bottom line is we have raised a group of stupid people who work retail, that these procedures are put into place as a substitute for awareness and common sense.

I worked at a bank and there were many good looking fake bills. It is a loss though. People don't get to exchange it. I have actually had customers try to pass their counterfeit money on to me. However, when you spend your day counting bills, it is very noticeable to come across a fake. I have to tell them that I have to keep it and their account will not be credited.

LOL Speedy. I think the cashier's face would be priceless when you whip the marker out.

Question, does the ink on those markers disappear. I see cashier's marking the $20s but I don't recall ever getting marked money back.

Thanks for the idea speedy. I am going to have to get me one just to pull that on them. You do know that it is dangerous to give a SmartA ideas like this do you not!

The ink does disappear and it actually just spots bad paper - stuff we all buy nowadays versus the government.

I will buy some of these markers and lets all start marking our bills! We need to shoot a hidden video of this and see the cashier's response.

Tom: Yep, it's time to show them who their real boss is...

But, what if we mark these bills and it comes back as counterfeit - do we ask for an additional $20 back since the first one is counterfeit? Do we charge them with distribution of counterfeit money? What?

I've had 2 so far and never once had the SS contact me about it. The cashier showed me it was fake and said they had to keep it. And I still owed them $20.

One came from a church collection fund to buy school supplies and the other came from a fairground concession stand.

It was just bad luck on my part. If I had gotten them from the bank I could have complained to them but how could I proof I wasnt the one passing off the fake bills for profit?

sarcasticdragon you have some bad luck or I am a real lucky person. I get my twenty's straight from the bank. I never carry larger bills for someone to make change with $20s.

I try to carry bills no larger than $20's for that reason also. Plus, some businesses claim to not accept bills larger than $50's.

Go out and buy your counterfeit-finder pen and protect yourself. Hey, is this like asking the cop for their drivers license, registration, and insurance card?

If you find a bad one, just give it back to them and ask for a good one. Tell the merchant you are reporting the bad bill to the Secret Service and then follow through with your promise.

i wouldn't depend on the secret service for nothin' look at what they haven't done for us for years. ask for the manager and trade in that bill if they don't then open up a can of your own whoop arse.

Yeah I would be hesitant for the secret service to get involved - I would let the store deal with them. My main concern would be getting a good twenty dollar bill back if I inadvertently got a counterfeit one. Isn't it the secret service that screwed up certain issues with intelligence on 911 with the CIA? I don't follow these things that much but they've been ridiculed in the past.

Check with your bank. If they can't give you one, I'm sure they could tell you where to find one.

I just called my bank and she told me where to go order a pen. She thinks the cost is $5 per pen so I'll just pick up one for now. I will mark any bills over $5 just to get the cashier's mind...boggling!

I will need to figure out how to video the "incident" in order to give my fellow bloggers - laughs! Stay tuned!
