Making John 'Q' Public better: That's the goal of the "Citizens Police Academy", and you're invited. A lot of police departments do them, but what's involved? St. Louis County police chief Jerry Lee "Sounds Off" about what the program does and how it helps the entire community, one neighborhood and business district at a time. What do you think? Would you ever sign up for a class like this? Leave your comments below!

I don't think I would do it. The police are paid to do their jobs. The best I can do is describe what I saw if I seen something happen. JMO

imapayne the police are getting paid to do their job but they sure don't get paid enough. I think it is a good idea to get to know the officer who patrols your neighborhood. Many don't understand or can't image what an officer has to go through. Doing the similator would be a good experience.

If they want their citizens to truly know what they are doing then have each person do a "ride along" either on a Friday or Saturday night from 8pm until 2am or weeknights.

A Citizens Police Academy is nothing more than graduating from your Neighborhood Watch training. I believe that NW is key to neighborhoods and building relationships with officers.

As for the simulators, yeah, they might be fun but the ride along will show them the full spectrum of what really happens in the streets. I think keeping the citizens informed and letting them know the cops are there for them is the best solution.

I can only imagine that this group would produce some kids that never grew up still wanting to play cops and robbers..... The citizens watch was bad enough..... They were possessed with it and ended up stepping over the line......

What was that group that used to wear the strange hats years ago..... Didn't they end up getting in trouble for overstepping their bounds....... it was something like Guardian Angels.....

It was the Guardian Angels...... Some of them were killed.........

Two Guardian Angels have been killed while on a patrol. Frank Melvin was shot by a police officer in Newark, New Jersey in 1981. The officer who killed the angel alleged that Melvin was running toward his partner in a hostile manner. Juan Oliva was shot by a gang member in New York City in 1983. Two other former members were killed while intervening in muggings (The episodes inspired the song "Red Angel Dragnet" by the British rock band The Clash). There have been no more fatalities of Guardian Angels on a Safety Patrol since then.

They are still around but never made it in St Louis although they were here for a while.....

NO!!

I heard the Chief talking about it last night and I don't need to have crooks teaching/showing me anything.

As I've said before, all of them break the law using their badge to do it.

you are correct when you state that these officers are not paid enough for doing their jobs. They are out there every night protecting your families while you are safe in your homes with your families. To me it takes a special type of person to be a police officer and they DO NOT get enough credit for what they do. All that is ever reported is bad comments. What about all the good that they do. You all work 9 til 5 and go home safe. These guys and girls work 24-7 and never know if they will be going home after their shift is over. I pray for them all the time. Without them what would our world be ? Think about it !!

Yes, most law enforcement (patrol) are underpaid while some of the higher-ups are overpaid. I have seen some of the salaries the ISP make in Collinsville - working behind a desk.

More money needs to be diverted to patrolmen - cops on the street. What is it truly worth to pull over a carload of four individuals at 2am in the morning?

Oh, yeah, and that is in East St. Louis or North St. Louis. Six figures wouldn't motivate me to do that job. A big thank you to those men and women that are serving and protecting all of us.
