A proposal to ban cell phone use while driving in Town and Country is expected to be read at the board of alderman’s meeting Monday night. If it passes, Town and Country will be the first city in Missouri to outlaw cell phones while driving. Part of the reason for the ordinance here in Town and Country is the recent deadly crash where a tractor trailer smashed into numerous cars.   The driver is believed to have been on his cell phone.

There are so many things that can be a distraction while driving. How do you eliminate one without eliminating the other.

Eating
Drinking
Kids
Changing radio station
Changing CD
Smoking
Pagers (if there are any still out there)
Putting on makeup
Shaving
Reading a map
Listening to GPS directions
Headphones
Talking to others in the car

In a perfect world people always drive with the utmost care and concern for themselves and other drivers.

But this aint a perfect world and therefor these types of laws will keep on popping up. They have to.

Drivers have overall become rather selfish.. you have to FORCE people to give a crap about the lives of everyone else on the road. If left up to them they would choose texting and chit chatting over you and your families lives any day.

Keeping both hands on the wheel and paying attention to where you are going..... Wow what a concept.... Who thought of that.....

Wait...!! wasn't there something about that in drivers ed. and on the drivers exam....??

Sadly, this is a problem with drivers. Although, most drivers that use headsets and use their cell phones to talk are carrying on conversations just as they would with someone who is in the car with then while they drive.
Does this also apply to police officers in their vehicles? Squad cars are the police officer's office and I personally (today as a matter of fact) have witnessed officers talking on cell phones while they drive as well.

California made a state law prohibiting use in utilizing a cell phone while driving. This new law became effective on jUly 1, 2008.

If caught with a cell phone while driving you receive a healthy fine. If an accident is caused while driving with a cell phone, bad news for the driver.

hello,

you may want to attempt in making this a state law, because unless it is visually posted, people from out of state or other areas may not be aware of the ordinance and may get off on a technicality.

I'm congradulating Town & Country on their efforts...people who cut-off other drivers, tailgate, and change lanes without signaling while on their cell phones...well, now you've just got one more reason to get stopped. To the Town & Country PD: Happy Hunting. Oh, and to Linda, they are going to be posting signage at the city limits around Town & Country if/when this ordinance passes.

I drive for a living and use a cell phone many times daily however I NEVER use it without my earpiece and NEVER dial an actual number until stopped either at a signal or a delivery point... using phones that are not hands free turns drivers into menaces to driving society!

I can't wait to see how this will work. I have noticed that almost everyone that drives has a cell phone to their ear. I wonder if they are really talking to someone on the other end, or just holding the phone to their ear to look cool. I have a cell phone for emergencies, I never use it other than to call and let hubby know that I am on my way home, and that's before I ever start up the car. I may use it for 2 minutes a month. I also notice in my town, that every police officer that I see on the road, usually has a cell phone to his ear. Guess they won't be outlawed in my neck of the woods for a long time.

WOA...

Now I am not sure if I am more shocked at the proposed law or the Comments...

Have we learned nothing? This is the same Cheering I heard for Banning Smoking. The Same Calls for State Wide Enforcment for the Destruction of Liberty...

Are we So quick to fall in line and play the games of Emminent Threat and quick fix?

I say NO to the law...NO to the destruction of More Liberty...

As a Voice of Wisdom from the Past once said,

"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is argument of tyrants. It is the creed of slaves." William Pitt in the House of Commons November 18, 1783

It is not neccessary for the Law, for you can not outlaw the lack of Common Sense no matter how hard you try.

But you can be more aware yourself and beware those that you see doing things that are unsafe...regulate it yourself..do not encourage the Government to Destroy any more Liberties....even those with which you do not agree..

For when you join the Cheering throng for the Destruction of Liberty..it will only be a Matter of time..before a Crowd is Cheering for the destruction of yours...

Besides, don't Police Officers have enough to watch out for? Do you really want them wasting their time looking for people using....Cell Phones?

What's Next, Bugger picking and driving Tired? How about banning people with one Eye..they have no Depth perception.. I should know....I only have one eye myself...

If they do this, I want to also outlaw the use of TV's/VCR's in the front seat of cars...I have been noticing a lot of people driving around alone in the car with video players playing in the front seat....This is a more serious than cell phones...people can stear into concrete pillars, or your car just by watching those durn things.

There are too many activities people seem to engage in while driving a car. Unless we are willing to ban them all we need to leave this one alone. Cell phones are widely used, that is one of the reasons they crop on so high on traffic statistics. Before we throw the baby out with the bathwater we need to look at what the % of accidents to usage is compared to other activities.

okay heres my point of view!!
If that does happen how would the police officer catch you? The police have an hard enoguh times catching people who speeds and run red lights, if they add this on top of it.. It will be much harder for them to pay attion to other things... And what if you had an emerengy and something bad happend? And when they do catch u, will it be another ticket you have to pay for? will they take your cellphones?
This is stupid i think we need to put an "END TO THIS"
