School districts are having a tough time with funding the three R's: reading, writing, and arithmetic.  In some cases, when the budget is tight, music education is the first to go. But one of St. Louis' up-and-coming performers says music education shouldn’t be cut. Erin Bode Sounds Off about says she's the perfect example of why music programs should be kept in the curriculum. What do you think? Did you benefit from music education classes? Tell us below in the comments section.

You have to make cuts where the fat is and if music is the answer then slash-slash. I guess Ryan Howard would argue to keep the baseball program too.

If you have student teachers readily available in your district then increase class sizes to 28-32 mainly at the K-8 levels. This will reduce a few salaries while getting a student teacher for FREE.

Football is the first major program that can go because it's one of the most costliest to maintain. Drivers education programs are leaving some districts since private companies are offering huge discounts for summer training.

No matter where the cuts someone will be feel the pinch - be prepared because our economy is still heading south.

I'm definately am that oppose to taking music and art out of the school system. Music which is an form of art, makes all the academics come to life. Any music, theater, or art class is the time that you can express your self and relieve your self of all the formalities of regular academics class. I made good grades in high school, and I practiced dillegence in all my classes, but when it was time for choir (which we did recieve a full credit for)that was time when I could "be me". I still love singing, as a matter of fact, I'm faithful to karaoke because that is just what I enjoy....Music soothes the mind!

Why did you name this clip the 3 R's? You do know that only one of these subjects starts with an R, correct? I think you should consider something new.

You take away all the electives then school becomes no different than prison..... Music art and sports seem to always be on the chopping block when a district wants to find some more money..... Why should the kids suffer for management stupidity..... If we don't invest in our kids then there is no future..... Kids need to have some fun too....

P. S... The three R's mean the three Required Subjects......

Who is Erin Bode?

She is a folk jazz style artist. Her voice and her music reminds me somewhat of Diana Krall. Of course, Diana Krall is a national name and the wife of Elvis Costello. Erin is going places so check her out online or at the stores.

As for programs in schools and cutting costs - sports and personnel are the best solution.

Diana Krall? Never heard of her. Now Elvis Costello, THERE is a name EVERYONE can relate too.

Well Dino - just google Elvis Costello - Diana Krall is a cool, great looking, gal that we saw about 2 years ago at the Fox. She's humorous and really feeds to her crowd. I believe Erin will do the same.
