Westboro Baptist Church Lost Lawsuit for Millions!

Not much coverage here on Fox, but I notice on national news that the Westboro Baptist Church, that church of fanatic extremists on the right who picket fallen soldiers' funerals and claim God is punishing America for allowing gays, LOST a lawsuit for $11 million!!!

A father of one of the soldiers killed in Iraq decided enough was enough from these pathetic lost souls who carry picket signs saying "God Hates F*gs" and "God Hates America" at funerals and he sued.  He won.  And the jury award him over $10 MILLION in punitive damages.

Of course, being the usual "law doesn't apply to me" types that these religious fanatics are, they are laughing it off and claiming it will be overturned.  Of course, if they can just get their case in front of one of the conservative right-wing radical judges who legislate from the bench maybe they can do so.

It so happens Congress also banned these wierdos from picketing at federal funerals, but the law doesn't apply to private ones.

I put this in the new "Faith" blog section, because isn't this an issue of faith?  What do some of you "faithful" think of these people?

Doing the work of God, or are they setting themselves up for spending an eternity wallowing in the unholiest lake of fire in hell anyone can imagine?

I say the latter.

I have never been so happy about a lawsuit. Sure, it will either be overturned or the money award will be drastically reduced. But, a message has been sent. We will no longer tolerate this sort of thing.
Missouri has a law that they must remain at the entrance to the cemetary. One of the few things that Blount has done right. These are not people of God. They are pushing their own agenda. I hope the burners are up on high for them!

I am a 'faithful' as you put it and I think those people are nuts. I don't agree at all with what they do at funerals. It's just sick. I believe homosexuality is a choice - you're not born with it. I think that God disagrees with it as well, but it's not my place to nag someone to death because I disagree with them. I'll tell you I think it's wrong, but I'm not going to bother you about it. Although, I personally can't handle those extreme gay guys. You know the ones I'm talking about - total flamers. LOL! I just can't handle their personality. I get annoyed by women that act all girly and prissy, let alone a guy doing it! LMAO!

I hope the settlement sticks. These people shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a funeral. I have a suggestion for their signs! I am also a 'faithful' but don't try to push my beliefs down anyone's throat. Live and let live, but let everyone else alone.

So far, I think many of you will agree with me that these Westboro people are NOT representative of people of true faith. I could say the same thing about Bush, but here it is even more obvious.

I think Bush would be in big trouble if he even suggested soldiers were being killed to punish us for allowing homosexuality!

I do agree, mamba, about the real flamers - being a guy, I may support whatever they want to do, but please, leave ME out of it, thank you! And I like the suggestion about storage for their picket signs! And, yes, kudos to the Republicans in Missouri for taking a stand against this kind of behavior - I was a bit surprised, thinking Blunt would support their "religious freedom of expression"!

To those who have responded so far, thank you for proving that "faithful" doesn't necessarily mean "fanatic".

I have one more suggestion for keeping that scum of the earth away from military funerals. If you have seen me say it before I apologize.
The honor guard that does the rifle salute, give them live ammo. And tell the ready aim fire. You can guess at who.
I have attended way to many funerals in my life. If I was at one and these "people" showed up, I would be the one arrested.

Rev. Phelps is a very soul-sick individual. He is leading his congregation into the wrong path of rightous indignation. Funerals, for the most part, are private family/friends affairs and are not normally open to the public (unless the deceased is a public figure). His group should not have the right to picket anyone's funeral, no matter what the Constitution says! There is such thing as Right to Privacy!

That the protesters even consider this approach is a gross miscarriage of their perception of right to assemble. Carrying signs stating 'God hates' any of His creation show a total misunderstanding of God's omnipotence and His infinite love. The 'gay lifestyle' may well be an abomination to Him, but interfering with a families grief at a funeral probably is as well.

They shouldn't have done that, but I do believe God will judge any nation that embraces sodomy.

I belong to an independent fundamental Baptist church and I want to make a very strong point that Westboro is NOT the poster child for all fundamental Baptist churches.

Some of Westboro Baptist Church's practices are obviously out of control. Remember, that Satan can use and twist religion to steer people away from the truth.

Well if the father sued these people for 10 million with the intention to get big bucks out of this, I don't support either side. I think it's pathetic when people sue others for financial gains. It's one thing to recover lost funds from medical bills, etc. by suing, but to sue for monetary gain is preposterous, and should be unlawful. These religious fanatics drive me nuts. Using their religion as a fortress to hide behind their fears... What a bunch of sissies.

i think he sued to make a statement. get these religous crazy people to stay away from funerals like his sons. and money talks. hopefully this crazy minister listens. it is sad that this man had to do something so drastic to get this congregation to knock it off. reglious groups get this kind of stuff in their heads and they think they are right about everything. there is a lot of that going around. you have to hit churches where it counts. in the purse

I have yet to meet anyone (IRL or online), from any political or religious persuasion that doesn't think that Phelps and company are not completely insane whackjobs. His 'church' consists of people in his family. He's a sociopathic narcissist of the finest order.

And as to the lawsuit? If that was what it took to STOP this guy from being such a social abomination, then rock on. People should be allowed to grieve and bury their loved ones in peace.

I think this blog is wonderful, sik, for two reasons, one to further expose the idiots that protest funerals as what they are and the additional suffering they put on these poor families and two, so you can see not all people of faith are radicals. I am very much pro life but disagree profusely with the bombing of abortion clinics and extreme measures to stop it. I feel like any measure that hurts anyone else physically or emotionally to convey a message is wrong. That in itself is not Christian.
As you said jeepers he doesn't have a "congregation" . I have seen kids that probably don't have a clue why they are there standing holding his signs. I feel sorry for them.

agreed i do not support homosexual lifestyles,
nor abortion, i do not support anti-abortion groups that use violence tactics, nor groups that are abusive at military funerals. but again i repeat religion is used by satan quite effectively for evil. true Christianity is relationship with Christ, He would never condone these types of actions, He and we as Christians, hate the sin but love the sinner.

Who cares if these Service men or women live an alternative life style, THEY LOST THEIR LIVES to a war that they may not have agreed with, as a mother with 2 kids in the Military and one over in Iraq and a wife to a VETERAN (army special forces 1987 - 1997) IT IS COMPLETELY WRONG for those NUT JOBS to think it is acceptable to protest any funeral, can I go protest their service on Sunday and yell unacceptable rants at them?

I am a Baptist. Those fanatic idiots need to remove the name Baptist from their name...because they only represent about 2% if that of Baptists that feel that way. I am glad that man won and I will be even happier when the high court doesnt overturn it. Then how much will they fob it off??

its all in His Book, the Bible, The Mind of Christ. its a history book of us, the way we were the way we are the way we will be, its a history book of God, He who always Was, who always Is, and He who always Will Be it tells us what is expected of us and what we can expect from Him. just as Jesus' appearance on earth was a gift for us so is the Bible, God owes us nothing, in His mercy He provided everything we need including Salvation. sik go for it dude, God thinks you deserve it He wants that no one is lost.

Sick of the extreme right wing profiteers commandeering this country putting profits ahead of people. I'm old enough to remember when the government represented the people, not just the wealthiest of the wealthy. But that doesn't mean I don't love my two cute little Fox Terriers and all doggies! But we all need to have some fun every now and then, in the face of a continuing and harrowing threat from the extremists and fanatics to take our freedom and our money as they force their agenda on all of us. We need to take our country back, and we can have fun doing it! Life under Obama will just be more fun - no more hangups about prayer in schools or burning flags, we'll just get on with life! Here's hoping we don't make yet another four year mistake - More of the Same Pain McCain, or Obama, we'll choose, and live with the decision for four more years. I think the choice is clear, don't you?
